Successful software projects require collaboration between team members. Efficient collaboration relies on both technical and social linkages. In this paper, we investigate whether a socio-technical analysis can support software contributors in identifying experts helping to review their source code. We mined the histories of five open source projects (OSS) from GitHub and examined both technical and socio-technical interactions based on Social Network Analysis (SNA). Mapping communication network to files co-edition network shows the existence of collaboration patterns between core teams and peripherals in the studied OSS projects. Our main contribution is the construction and mapping of three sources of social networks, in which contributors interact by co-editing, commenting or reviewing. We were able to identify behavioral patterns between core teams and peripherals related to the activity of code review. Our findings have implications on improving collaboration between contributors within virtual OSS communities witch drive teams' performance and software products quality.

Global software engineering is the consequence of the rather friction-free economic principles of the entire software industry. Many companies start global software engineering (GSE) due to perceived cost differences. Most of these companies engage globally active outsourcing companies to achieve fastest ramp-up of their globalization targets. After a while into that business they realize that savings are much smaller and problems are more difficult to cure than before. Disillusioned many abandon their GSE activities. What has gotten wrong? GSE bears many challenges, specifically if done with an external supplier. We will look in this article to lessons learned from GSE to effectively and successfully manage supplier relationships. Specifically we use process maturity and CMMI as a guidance how to improve supplier relationships. Both experiences and practical guidance result from our work with clients in automotive and telecommunication industries. They can be readily implemented, specifically our checklists for effective supplier management.

Communication in global software projects usually occurs between native and non-native English speakers with the drawback of an unequal ability to fully understand and contribute to discussions. In this paper, we investigate the adoption of combining speech recognition and machine translation in order to overcome language barriers among stakeholders who are remotely negotiating software requirements. We report our findings from a simulated study where stakeholders communicate speaking three different languages with the help of the Google mobile speech translation service.

This paper presents the solutions for a user interface environment which have been developed within the ViroLab Virtual Laboratory to enable developers and medical researchers to develop and execute experiments. Experiments require support in form of a script editor easily extendible by a number of additional functions related to the functionality of the Virtual Laboratory, like sharing experiments, and an experiment management mechanism which enables the experiments to be executed with a number of facilities allowing, e.g. tracking the execution, logging errors. Moreover, two user groups, developers and users, need to collaborate to improve experiments and introduce more refinements to the research conducted, which imposes many requirements on the environment which becomes the main collaboration platform for the researchers. The work identifies these requirements in the domain of medical sciences and proposes solutions for efficient and convenient collaboration.

Agile methods promise improvements in code quality, but getting the full benefits is claimed to take years. A lack of visibility to improvements in the early stages of agile transformation can result in motivation decrease among the people in the organization, and thus slow down the agile transformation progress. In this study we analyzed defect data in a large multisite organization during the first six months of agile transformation. Defect data was compared to the results of a survey on agile transformation experiences and perceptions, which was conducted in the organization six months after starting the agile transformation. According to the results, improvements were visible in the defect data, but less than 25% of the people in the organization felt that quality had improved. Further study revealed that a realistic perception of the positive changes in the defect data coincided with positive emotional engagement in agile transformation.

This paper describes the social practice of distributed party programming as a natural extension of pair programming in a distributed context with two or more software developers working together. To this end we provide an overview of the Eclipse plug-in Saros, a software implementation supporting this practice, and explain its technical architecture. The central contribution of this paper is a detailed description of four concrete scenarios of distributed collaboration where one of them is distributed party programming. Furthermore it will be shown how each scenario is supported by Saros. The paper closes with a discussion of preliminary findings about establishing Saros in Open Source projects.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is an 8.4m optical survey telescope being constructed on Cerro Pachon in Chile. The data management system being developed must be able to process the nightly alert data, 20,000 expected transient alerts per minute, in near real time, and construct annual data releases at the petabyte scale. The development team consists of more than 90 people working in six different sites across the US developing an integrated set of software to realize the LSST science goals. In this paper we discuss our agile software development methodology and our API and developer decision making process. We also discuss the software tools that we use for continuous integration and deployment.

System products need to be developed faster in a global development environment. A more efficient user requirements collection and product feature analysis become more important to meet strict time-to-market and quality constraints. The goal of this research is to study and find the best practices to support distributed business requirements management during the early phases of product development. The paper describes the process of mining requirements management organizational patterns. The experiences and improvement ideas of requirements management have been collected from a large company operating in the sector of the process automation industry. The results present issues that were found important when managing requirements in a distributed environment. The results are further generalized in the form of an organizational pattern which makes it easier for other companies to reflect on and to apply the results to their own cases.

Research today is all about collaboration. For a successful collaboration to exist between various researchers spread over geographically different locations, there has to be a very efficient method of 'logging', 'sharing' and 're-creating' data and the methods used in obtaining this data. The naive way of having a central repository where all the collaborators are expected to manually document and log their results, doesn't scale well, when the size of the collaborations increases drastically and when the amount of shared data is colossal. CODESH - COllaborative development SHell is a novel attempt to address this problem. The user works on CODESH's intelligent shell, which automatically logs his/her session: commands, scripts executed, output produced, environment changes made and other information needed to re-create the session later. This session is uniquely tagged and stored in a distributed backend repository and can be extracted and reproduced by a collaborator. The Object Oriented design and distributed framework of CODESH allow for the use of CVS, MySQL and Clarens based repositories which can be either local for personal use or shared between various groups of collaborators.
