Technology adoption in agricultural field can improve productivity and quality of crop with less effort of farmer. distributed embedded system (DES) helps farmers to create suitable environment for harvesting even in unstable natural weather conditions. distributed embedded system measures and control efficiently different parameters like water availability, temperature, humidity etc. which are necessary in crop development cycle. Soil quality and crop development depends on water irrigation method. In this paper controller Area Network (CAN) communication has been proposed in order to handle communication between distributed nodes for irrigation system.

Different industrial applications essentially require a reliable communication without data loss for smooth functioning and better control performance. Controller Area Network (CAN) bus based distributed embedded systems can provide better communication solution to satisfy this requirement. In addition to this, also provides safety for critical applications, inter-operability between systems, data sharing applications, etc.... with cost effectiveness. In a Digital Data communication, Clock synchronization is important for data quality and security. For CAN bus, different methods of clock synchronization mechanism for noise reduction were developed earlier. In this paper we propose and implement a new mechanism of "Multi-coded EX-OR Masking technique" to reduce jitter-noise and drift during trans-receiving a long sequence of identical bits.

Natural water evaporation is a physical phenomenon that is useful in many industrial applications. Many researchers have worked to monitor the parameters affecting the brine evaporation rate. Many different criteria have been determined by researchers to obtain data for the parameters. This paper presents a simulation based on modified Penman equation. Objective of this work is to acquire the parameters experimentally in a different way using distributed embedded system. Finally evaporation rate for series of condensers prepared for natural evaporation type salt manufacturing process has been compared with experimental values. The result shows that the parameter acquisition method performs well in the environment of salt manufacturing unit and also helps estimating seepage component of brine.

Controller Area Network (CAN) can be employed to perform Real time operations in distributed system. Time bounded distributed task execution demands effective performance of different nodes in Real time systems. Performance of the task highly depends on reliable communication between node to node & control efficiency of the distributed system. CAN bus serial communication is capable to handle time bound operations of real time system. Continues evaluation of the parameters like real-time capability, message response time, bandwidth utilization, jitter, etc improves system performance. In this paper authors propose a bit stuffing mechanism that reduces jitter which can improves overall performance of the CAN bus based real time system.

This paper presents a case study in which an inexpensive embedded control system has been designed and built on top of an open-source real-time operating system. A COTS protocol stack for the well-known MODBUS protocol has been selected and enhanced to provide network communications with a wider address space and a periodic election of the bus master. This design technique has proved very effective to reduce software development time and cost, without incurring in the overhead and footprint issues sometimes associated with COTS software modules. The whole system runs effectively even on low-cost microcontrollers and can be ported easily from one microcontroller family to another.

The open computing language (OpenCL) is a standard open source specification for parallel computing on heterogeneous architectures. OpenCL offers a set of abstract models for substantial acceleration in parallel computing and is supported by most of the leading hardware vendors. In this paper, we present a systematic approach for employing OpenCL as a hardware abstraction layer that enables the user to utilize the supported computing resources by using different scheduling and mapping schemes. We illustrate the approach by a case study of a distributed automotive embedded system. In particular, we developed an extendable set of related advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) applications under a common application setup which is mapped and executed on different OpenCL supported devices of an embedded platform. The detailed evaluations performed using different scheduling schemes in conjunction with various OpenCL mapping configurations are presented.

PCIe connected peripheral devices are increasingly deployed in distributed embedded systems. For example, a GPU accelerator connected with a host CPU via PCIe interconnect brings massive performance improvement for artificial intelligence applications. These peripheral devices benefit from the shared memory of the host CPU for performance gains, but sharing the host CPU resources brings security challenges. The shared PCIe interconnect hardware of the host CPU can be exploited to create a timing-based information leakage side-channel between multiple connected peripheral devices that are isolated at the software level. This paper proposes an attack setup that consists of GPU and FPGA peripheral devices accessing their data from the host CPU's main memory. Both covert communication and information leakage attacks are demonstrated at a throughput rate of 13.02 kbps. A temporal isolation-based mitigation scheme is proposed that utilizes time-division multiplexing between the peripheral devices to mitigate the attacks. The paper primarily focuses on demonstrating the security context of the proposed attack and mitigation.

In this paper, we propose a novel analytical method, called scheduling time bound analysis, to find a tight upper bound of the worst-case response time in a distributed real-time embedded system, considering execution time variations of tasks, jitter of input arrivals, and scheduling anomaly behavior in a multi-tasking system all together. By analyzing the graph topology and worst-case scheduling scenarios, we measure the conservative scheduling time bound of each task. The proposed method supports an arbitrary mixture of preemptive and non-preemptive processing elements. Its speed is comparable to compositional approaches while it gives a much tighter bound. The advantages of the proposed approach compared with related work were verified by experimental results with randomly generated task graphs and a real-life automotive application.

In this paper we consider distributed embedded systems in which privacy or confidentiality of the internal communication is critical, and present an approach to optimizing cryptographic algorithms under strict timing constraints. We have developed a technique to search for the best system-affordable cryptographic protection for the messages transmitted over the internal communication bus. Towards this, we formulate the optimization technique in Constraint Logic Programming (CLP), which returns optimal results. However, CLP executions are computationally expensive and hence, we propose an efficient heuristic as an alternative. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed heuristic approach.

The resource reservation techniques provide effective means to lower the software complexity, ensure predictability and allow flexibility during the development and execution of complex distributed embedded systems. In this paper we propose a new end-to-end resource reservation model for distributed embedded systems. The model is comprehensive in such a way that it supports end-to-end resource reservations on distributed transactions with various activation patterns that are commonly used in industrial control systems. The model allows resource reservations on processors and real-time network protocols. We also present timing analysis for the distributed embedded systems that are developed using the proposed model. The timing analysis computes the end-to-end response times as well as delays such as data age and reaction delays. The presented analysis also supports real-time networks that can autonomously initiate transmissions. Such networks are not supported by the existing analyses. We also include a case study to show the usability of the model and end-to-end timing analysis with resource reservations.
