Nowadays, communication protocols are used in safety-critical automotive applications. In these applications, fault tolerance is a main requirement and the existence of single points of failure is a serious threat to system failures. Among the communication protocols, FlexRay is expected to become the communication backbone for future automotive systems. In this paper, we identify single points of failure in the FlexRay protocol by injecting a total of 135,600 single-bit transient faults into all accessible registers of the FlexRay communication controller. The results showed that about 1.2% of all injected faults caused the controller to freeze immediately. Based on these results and detailed study of the FlexRay specifications, a low-cost on-line monitoring mechanism is proposed to check freeze errors. Using this mechanism, the host controller distinguishes about 99.8% all occurred freeze errors into errors due to transient faults or due to standard operation of the FlexRay protocol.

Fault Tolerance for Flexible Time-Triggered Ethernet-based systems (FT4FTT) is a project to devise an architecture for distributed embedded systems that provides both flexibility to changing real-time requirements and high reliability through fault tolerance. One of the key parts of such an architecture is the communication subsystem. When designing such a subsystem many decisions have to be made. To understand how such decisions impact the reliability of the final design, in this paper we present a framework to evaluate the reliability of a large number of potential designs. The approach is based on storing a finite subset of the design space for the communication subsystem of FT4FTT in an undirected graph and then generating a continuous-time Markov chain from the graph to evaluate the reliability of each design belonging to the subset.

embedded systems are omnipresent in our daily lives and rapidly gaining more and more importance, with performance improvements and technological evolutions in several directions. One of the most promising directions of evolution is in their interconnection. Already today there is a broad variety of use cases for interconnected embedded systems (automobiles, airplanes, automated production halls, etc.) and the most cutting edge examples demand the distributed embedded systems to tightly couple their operation. As a direct result of this tight coupling, stringent requirements on the underlying communication network immediately arise. The Internet-of-Things (IoT) as a discipline and movement to systematically connect distributed embedded systems on large or even Internet-like scales, promises a new generation of systems and system-of-systems. In order to also enable tight coupling of embedded systems in the IoT, there is a need for deterministic communication channels with predictable and low communication latency and jitter. In this paper we discuss how synchronous deterministic channels can be developed for the IoT by application of the time-triggered communication paradigm and other technology standards currently under development.

I-SENSE demonstrates the potential of combining the scientific research areas multi-sensor data fusion and pervasive embedded computing. The main idea is to provide a generic architecture which supports a distributed online data fusion on an embedded system. Due to their high onboard processing and communication power our proposed architecture is designed to perform sophisticated data fusion tasks in realtime. Another goal of I-SENSE is to dynamically, change the configuration, thus, to be able able to react to changes in the systems environment. This paper describes ongoing work in developing necessary hard- and software components in order to perform realtime multi-level data fusion. We present the distributed I-SENSE platform and introduce our multi-level fusion framework. First experimental results on embedded image fusion demonstrates the feasibility of our approach.

An industrial vision system must perform a specific and unambiguous inspection. The examination result is crucial to determine if the analyzed item can keep on its transformation process into the production line. So, these systems are strategically installed after those process stations that could have generated a defect in the product. To lower production costs, it is always desirable to detect all failures and get the incorrect pieces out of the line. Implementing this kind of systems is not always simple. Occasionally, special failure features make the use of one single camera insufficient. The solution for multi-camera applications may involve the use and synchronization of several algorithms being executed in different cameras. Also, to fulfill the time constraints, a distributed way for image acquisition and processing is necessary. A Decision and Communication Management Methodology (D&CM-Cam) is presented in this paper. The methodology is designed for embedded Multi-smart Camera systems and consists on a sequence of tasks to assure correct communication among the system elements for a correct and fast decision making. The methodology resides on the smart cameras as algorithms, managing the communication and making the final decision by means of dynamic analysis and classifiers. The technique is described by two diagrams: Static and Dynamic. D&CM-Cam is applied to a case study in lamps production by means of a transparent glass tubs inspection system. Here D&CM-Cam is set for 4 parallel smart cameras to find out 2 different failures at about 17 parts per minute.

Software-intensive systems often consist of cooperating reactive components. In mobile and reconfigurable systems, their topology changes at run-time, which influences how the components must cooperate. The Scenario Modeling Language (SML) offers a formal approach for specifying the reactive behavior such systems that aligns with how humans conceive and communicate behavioral requirements. Simulation and formal checks can find specification flaws early. We present a framework for the Scenario-based Programming (SBP) that reflects the concepts of SML in Java and makes the scenario modeling approach available for programming. SBP code can also be generated from SML and extended with platform-specific code, thus streamlining the transition from design to implementation. level video processing algorithms developed for an intelligent node that is a part of a distributed intelligent sensory network for surveillance purposes. In this paper, details of the architecture developed for this node are given, together with the low-level video processing algorithms used, as well as the results obtained after their implementation. The video board has been developed using two DSP processors for video processing tasks, as well as a FPGA dedicated to image capture (VGA size) and to dispatch them to the DSP processors. The low-level software includes acquisition, segmentation, labeling, tracking and classification of detected objects into three main categories: Person, Group and Luggage. Also, additional features are extracted from each object in the frame. The unit has to communicate the classification results and the main features obtained using XML streaming to upper levels, as well as the processed frames, using a JPEG stream. All these functionalities are currently running in the built prototypes.

Throughout the last decades, human motion capture systems have become an important tool for various sectors. Besides the entertainment sector, which is probably the most known sector to use these systems through popular movies and video games, the medical sector has adopted this technology as an analysis tool. These clinical analyses measure the human body posture and movement for various purposes including rehabilitation and sports, and require high accuracy and precision. Although there is a variety of products that offer these capabilities, there is not yet an affordable system that meets the requirements for medical implementations. We therefore propose using an ultrasonic six degrees-of-freedom sensor system which combines a distributed array of ultrasonic emitters and a small array of ultrasonic receivers. In order to support lowcost human pose estimation, while retaining the possibility for re-use and expandability, the need for a flexible embedded hardware platform naturally emerged. The proposed hardware design supports the requirements of a high accuracy and high precision pose estimation system while keeping its overall system cost low.

Model-based systems Engineering plays a pivotal role in the design of distributed embedded systems by enabling early virtual integration of the different parts of the system. Traditionally, the system model is composed of subsystem models at the same level of abstraction and with one particular view. However, in some cases the system model may comprise subsystem models at different levels of abstraction. Integration of these different abstraction level models imposes some important drawbacks which hinder the overall system simulations. These drawbacks need to be addressed to facilitate the simulation of systems composed with multi-level subsystem models. In this paper we report on modelling techniques for embedded and distributed systems to deal with this heterogeneity. We describe a methodology to (semi-)automatically generate an executable multi-level system simulation model starting from an abstract system architecture of the system. A platooning system example is used to demonstrate the new modelling techniques.

The importance and potential advantages with a comprehensive product architecture description are well described in the literature. However, developing such a description takes additional resources, and it is difficult to maintain consistency with evolving implementations. This paper presents an approach and industrial experience which is based on architecture recovery from source code at truck manufacturer Scania CV AB. The extracted representation of the architecture is presented in several views and verified on CAN signal level. Lessons learned are discussed.
