Penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) causes overloading or overvoltage in the grid-edge. Traditional measure of DER curtailment could decrease the economy or operating rate. Centralized optimal control of the total grid-edge is usually too complex to solve and requires ubiquitous information system. So distributed energy resource Management System with Distribution Grid Stabilization (DERMS-DGS) was proposed. It decomposes the optimization into one Distribution Grid Operator (DGO) and multiple Micro Grid Operators (MGOs), with an improved Generalized Benders Decomposition (GBD). DGO realizes the optimal power flow of the grid with demand response, and MGO realizes the optimal operation of adjacent DERs in the demand side. To guarantee the convergence of GBD, the feasible region of MGO was estimated by a dedicated optimization so that the feasibility cut was avoided. Typical seasonal distribution grid models for China in 2030 were formulated according to real data and trend. Simulation result showed that, compared with the baseline technology which is based on DER curtailment, DERMS-DGS resolved more overloading or overvoltage, made 3.4% less profit in urban and 90.8% more profit in suburban with DER penetration speed 100%, and 22.7% more profit in urban and 229.5% more profit in suburban with DER penetration speed 150%, and significantly reduced PV curtailment or EV waiting.

Electricity, as a sustainable energy carrier, plays a central role in the transition scenarios for carbon neutralization of energy systems. Expanding the potential of electricity requires intelligent integration of electricity infrastructures and electricity markets with distributed energy resources (DERs) including roof-top solar photovoltaics (PVs), controllable loads, and storage batteries. This integration will advance the management of power distribution grids, resulting in harmonization of the distribution grids and variable renewable generation. In the foreseeable future, the DERs will be actively used to perform advanced management of power distribution grids and compensate fluctuation in variable renewable power generation such as PVs and wind power. Market-based coordination mechanisms are already practiced in large-scale electricity production, electricity trading and transmission around the world. Using these mechanisms at the distribution grid level to integrate numerous flexible devices into the grids remains an important research topic. This paper reviews the role of DER integration toward carbon-neutral power systems, the state-of-art and challenges associated with market-based approaches for integrating flexible demand, distributed generation, and storage. The smart grid represents the next generation of electricity distribution systems that utilizes recent technological innovations. It uses digital communication between its components and entities to attain more automation, self-sufficiency, and reliability. One of the many concerns in smart grid digital communication discussions is the possibility of violating customers' privacy. Violating customers' privacy imposes a significant barrier as smart grid desirable attributes are tightly tied to customers' participation. Employing privacy models can address concerns regarding information privacy in smart grid digital communication. In this work, we provide an approach to utilizing K -anonymity to ensure data within the system excludes Personally Identifiable Information. Results suggest that a dynamically generated generalization hierarchy minimizes information loss incurred by the anonymization process.

This paper proposes a data-driven topology identification method for distribution systems with distributed energy resources(DERs).First,a neural network is trained to depict the relationship between nodal power injections and voltage magnitude measurements,and then it is used to generate synthetic measurements under independent nodal power injections,thus eliminating the influence of correlated nodal power injections on topology ***,a maximal information coefficient-based maximum spanning tree algorithm is developed to obtain the network topology by evaluating the dependence among the synthetic *** proposed method is tested on different distribution networks and the simulation results are compared with those of other methods to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Installed capacity optimization of distributed energy resource systems for residential buildings

Our work aims to reduce residential energy consumption and expense by presenting a methodology for integrating electricity and hot water supply, and determining the optimum installed capacities of the selected distributed energy resource systems, which consist of a photovoltaic system, a solar water heating system and a fuel cell system. Initially, we build the dynamic model respectively for every individual system on the basis of their respective working principles. Then we propose operation strategies of electric power and hot water separately for the integration of the models. Followed, we apply a genetic algorithm to optimize the installed capacities of the systems, aiming at reducing the conventional energy consumption and the life cycle costs. With a complete database, the integration and optimization methodology are finally applied to a typical building located in Fukuoka City in Japan. It is shown by the computer simulation that the methodology which we propose can help to reduce considerable quantity of residential energy consumption and expense. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. distributed energy resource (DER) systems have elicited increasing attention and applications because of their excellent economic and environmental performance. However, uncertainties exist in such systems, preventing their potential advantages to be realized. In this study, an interval optimization-based model for the optimal design of DER systems is proposed, considering uncertainties in energy prices, renewable energy intensity, and load demands. Uncertainties are described as interval numbers, and the uncertain optimization model is transformed into a deterministic optimization problem using the order relationship and probability degree of interval numbers. The proposed model is applied to a typical hospital in Lianyungang, China, and its effectiveness is verified. One deterministic case and three uncertain cases are designed. The effects of uncertainties on system configuration and economic performance are also analyzed, and the optimal operation strategy under the three uncertainties is determined. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to analyze the effects of probability degree and weighting coefficient on total annual cost. Results show that uncertainties exert a cumulative effect on system optimization outcomes, and the proposed interval optimization model can obtain robust solutions to uncertainties.

This study focuses on the optimal design of distributed energy resource systems with consideration of large-scale uncertainty of energy demands based on decision-making theory. Five integrated modeling and optimization frameworks are developed through the combined use of mixed integer linear programming and uncertainty decision-making criteria (including optimistic criterion, pessimistic criterion, Hurwicz criterion, Laplace criterion, and minimax regret criterion). Superstructure-based mixed integer linear programming models are used for the optimal design and optimal operation of the system where the objective function is to minimize the annual cost. The uncertainty of energy demands is represented by assuming a set of possible scenarios. The proposed methods are applied to the planning of a distributed energy resource system for a hotel in city of Guangzhou, China and their validity and effectiveness are verified Results show that each method has its specific feature. Optimistic method is risky and recommends a relative small-scale system, while pessimistic method is conservative presenting a relative large-scale system. Hurwicz method is with great subjectivity, making different decisions at different values of optimism coefficient. Both Laplace method and minimax regret method identify a moderate-scale system as the best alternative. Sensitivity analyses on the energy demand scenarios are conducted and results show that the five methods have high sensitivity to the choice of scenarios.

To efficiently use the ubiquitous behind-the-meter distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems for providing grid services, this paper presents a hierarchical control framework for DER optimal aggregation and control. We first develop a convex optimization model to evaluate the DER flexibility, and then use a convex model-predictive-control based approach to dispatch those DERs. The hierarchical control framework consists of a utility controller, community aggregators and multiple home energy management systems. The flexibility of the DERs is evaluated by each controller in the hierarchy such that the resultant flexibility is feasible given its operational domain. Based on the determined flexibility, the hierarchical controllers then compute optimal setpoints for the DERs to help the distribution system regulate node voltages and provide other distribution grid services. Numerical simulations performed on a model of a real distribution feeder in Colorado, using actual DER data in a residential community demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively alleviate voltage issues and support resilient operation.

Design and implementation of communication architecture in a distributed energy resource system using IEC 61850 standard

A distributed energy resource (DER) system uses renewable generation and energy storage to provide power and ancillary services directly to users in the distribution system, and benefits the power grid by offering a solution to the energy crisis and mitigating the waste pollution to the environment. A key challenge in implementing a DER system is how to ensure the standardization of its communication network. The goal of this paper is to study and propose a common approach to standardize the communication network in the DER system using IEC 61850 and includes a design and implementation of the communication architecture. Two prototypical testbeds for the DER system have been developed in the SMERC laboratory and at KIER, with the aim to demonstrate a case study using the proposed approach. The testbeds contain various DERs such as photovoltaics, energy management systems, and electric vehicles. The procedure of integrating the IEC 61850 standard includes the system architecture configuration, data set design, test file write-up, and deployment of the gateway/client for communication. In the data set design, the specification of logical nodes, data object names, data attributes and common data classes are explained in detail. The research results and data collected from the current testbeds indicate a quality integration of the IEC 61850 standard with stable power flow and unified communication architecture in the DER system.
