Network simulators play a vital role in research and development of networks. Simulations are usually computationally intensive where distributed execution can improve performance significantly. However, due to the sequential nature of the communication process modeled by network simulators and limitations in access to source code it is not possible to completely isolate the sub-processes for distributed execution. An alternate solution in this case is to classify independent modules within a sequential simulation environment and execute the modules in parallel. This paper presents a similar mechanism for OPNET by enabling distributed execution of network simulation scenarios on a cluster of PCs using Sun Grid Engine. The proposed framework provides a demarcation between local configuration of software simulators and their remote execution. Such a demarcation gives a lead into future possibilities where computationally intensive tasks can be configured using devices with insufficient computational resources and executed remotely. Extensive experimental results in a Sun Grid Engine cluster environment using a variety of OPNET simulation scenarios show substantial efficiency in simulation run-time.

Subject-oriented business process management (S-BPM) introduces a new technique for process modeling that emphasizes the importance of the actors in business processes (subjects) and gives a balanced consideration to subjects, their actions, and goals. Because of the formal foundation and the clear declaration of subjects, S-BPM allows the distributed modeling and execution of processes, without losing the capability to verify the compatibility of processes. Executing cooperating processes in a distributed system also poses new requirements to the communication middleware, which is responsible for routing messages from one process instance to a remote peer process instance. In this paper, we describe an engine to execute S-BPM process choreographies. It is based on subject-oriented process modeling and a publish/subscribe middleware as communication basis. Our process engine also runs on mobile devices.

In this paper we look at the application of XML data management support in scientific data analysis workflows. We describe a software infrastructure that aims to address issues associated with metadata management, data storage and management, and execution of data analysis workflows on distributed storage and compute platforms. This system couples a distributed, filter-stream based dataflow engine with a distributed XML-based data and metadata management system. We present experimental results from a biomedical image analysis use case that involves processing of digitized microscopy images for feature segmentation.

The Kepler scientific workflow system enables creation, execution and sharing of workflows across a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines while also facilitating remote and distributed execution of workflows. In this paper, we present and compare different approaches to distributed execution of workflows using the Kepler environment, including a distributed data-parallel framework using Hadoop and Stratosphere, and Cloud and Grid execution using Serpens, Nimrod/K and Globus actors. We also present real-life applications in computational chemistry, bioinformatics and computational physics to demonstrate the usage of different distributed computing capabilities of Kepler in executable workflows. We further analyze the differences of each approach and provide a guidance for their applications.

Efficient Schedule Construction for distributed execution of Large DNN Models

Increasingly complex and diverse deep neural network (DNN) models necessitate distributing the execution across multiple devices for training and inference tasks, and also require carefully planned schedules for performance. However, existing practices often rely on predefined schedules that may not fully exploit the benefits of emerging diverse model-aware operator placement strategies. Handcrafting high-efficiency schedules can be challenging due to the large and varying schedule space. This paper presents Tessel, an automated system that searches for efficient schedules for distributed DNN training and inference for diverse operator placement strategies. To reduce search costs, Tessel leverages the insight that the most efficient schedules often exhibit repetitive pattern (repetend) across different data inputs. This leads to a two-phase approach: repetend construction and schedule completion. By exploring schedules for various operator placement strategies, Tessel significantly improves both training and inference performance. Experiments with representative DNN models demonstrate that Tessel achieves up to 5.5x training performance speedup and up to 38% inference latency reduction.

Coach planning with opponent models for distributed execution

In multi-agent domains, the generation and coordinated execution of plans in the presence of adversaries is a significant challenge. In our research, a special "coach" agent works with a team of distributed agents. The coach has a global view of the world, but has no actions other than occasionally communicating with the team over a limited bandwidth channel. Our coach is given a set of predefined opponent models which predict future states of the world caused by the opponents' actions. The coach observes the world state changes resulting from the execution of its team and opponents and selects the best matched opponent model based on its observations. The coach uses the recognized opponent model to predict the behavior of the opponent. Upon opportunities to communicate, the coach generates a plan for the team, using the predictions of the opponent model. The centralized coach generates a plan for distributed execution. We introduce (i) the probabilistic representation and recognition algorithm for the opponent models;(ii) a multi-agent plan representation, Multi-Agent Simple Temporal Networks;and (iii) a plan execution algorithm that allows the robust distributed execution in the presence of noisy perception and actions. The complete approach is implemented in a complex simulated robot soccer environment. We present the contributions as developed in this domain, carefully highlighting their generality along with a series of experiments validating the effectiveness of our coach approach.

Cyber-physical systems are found in many areas, e.g., manufacturing or smart cities. They consist of multiple components that cooperate to provide the desired functionality. This need for cooperation causes complex interactions between components, which makes developing cyber-physical systems difficult, especially systems whose component structure changes dynamically at runtime. We have created a formal, scenario-based specification method which makes it easier to develop distributed cyber-physical systems. We previously presented an approach for the distributed execution of such specifications based on naive and inefficient broadcasting. In this paper we propose a more efficient approach which uses the available network resources more economically.

We define a new approach to compilation to distributed architectures based on networks of abstract machines. Using it we can implement a generalised and fully transparent form of Remote Procedure Call that supports calling higher-order functions across node boundaries, without sending actual code. Our starting point is the classic Krivine machine, which implements reduction for untyped call-by-name PCF. We successively add the features that we need for distributed execution and show the correctness of each addition. Then we construct a two-level operational semantics, where the high level is a network of communicating machines, and the low level is given by local machine transitions. Using these networks, we arrive at our final system, the Krivine Net. We show that Krivine Nets give a correct distributed implementation of the Krivine machine, which preserves both termination and non-termination properties. All the technical results have been formalised and proved correct in AGDA. We also implement a prototype compiler which we compare with previous distributing compilers based on Girard's Geometry of Interaction and on Game Semantics.

Marine Ecosystem Models (MEMs) are increasingly driven by Earth System Models (ESMs) to better understand marine ecosystem dynamics, and to analyze the effects of alternative management efforts for marine ecosystems under potential scenarios of climate change. However, policy and commercial activities typically occur on seasonal-to-decadal time scales, a time span widely used in the global climate modeling community but where the skill level assessments of MEMs are in their infancy. This is mostly due to technical hurdles that prevent the global MEM community from performing large ensemble simulations with which to undergo systematic skill assessments. Here, we developed a novel distributed execution framework constructed of low-tech and freely available technologies to enable the systematic execution and analysis of linked ESM/MEM prediction ensembles. We apply this framework on the seasonal-to-decadal time scale, and assess how retrospective forecast uncertainty in an ensemble of initialized decadal ESM predictions affects a mechanistic and spatiotemporal explicit global trophodynamic MEM. Our results indicate that ESM internal variability has a relatively low impact on the MEM variability in comparison to the broad assumptions related to reconstructed fisheries. We also observe that the results are also sensitive to the ESM specificities. Our case study warrants further systematic explorations to disentangle the impacts of climate change, fisheries scenarios, MEM internal ecological hypotheses, and ESM variability. Most importantly, our case study demonstrates that a simple and free distributed execution framework has the potential to empower any modeling group with the fundamental capabilities to operationalize marine ecosystem modeling. Current workflow management systems fall short of supporting large-scale distributed, enterprise-wide applications. We present a scalable, rigorously founded approach to enterprise-wide workflow management, based on the distributed execution of state and activity charts. By exploiting the formal semantics of state and activity charts, we develop an algorithm for transforming a centralized state and activity chart into a provably equivalent partitioned one, suitable for distributed execution. A synchronization scheme is developed that guarantees an execution equivalent to a non-distributed one. This basic solution is further refined in order to reduce communication overhead and exploit parallelism between partitions whenever possible. The developed synchronization schemes are compared in terms of the number and size of synchronization messages.
