distributed execution designs challenge behavioral analyses of anti-malware solutions by spreading seemingly benign chunks of a malicious payload to multiple processes. Researchers have explored methods to chop payloads, spread chunks to victim applications through process injection techniques, and orchestrate the execution. However, these methods can hardly be practical as they exhibit conspicuous features and make use of primitives that anti-malware solutions and operating system mitigations readily detect. In this paper we reason on fundamental requirements and properties for a stealth implementation of distributed malware. We propose a new covert design, Rope, that minimizes its footprint by making use of commodity techniques like transacted files and return-oriented programming for covert communication and payload distribution. We report on how synthetic Rope samples eluded a number of state-of-the-art anti-virus and endpoint security solutions, and bypassed the opt-in mitigations of Windows 10 for hardening applications. We then discuss directions and practical remediations to mitigate such threats.

Agent-based modeling and simulation is an essential paradigm for complex, data-intensive research questions to absorb and process emergent insights from often large-scale scenarios. That demands its execution within a distributed simulation system. One critical factor of those runtime systems is distributing and partitioning involved agents. Unsuitable partitioning schemes lead to a computing load that needs to be synchronized continuously, which bears the risk of drastic performance reductions. Work from load balancing has produced a series of distribution classes that rely on geometric distribution. The partitioning decomposes the agent environment so that when the agent leaves one partition, it instantly switches to another partition. However, many simulations cannot be partitioned in this spatial way, for example, because no spatial reference exists or agents interact on different temporal-granularity levels. This paper presents a new partitioning approach for distributed agent-based simulation systems, supporting spatially and non-spatially attached simulations with freely definable distribution keys. Our approach defines groups of agents that migrate between servers at runtime following a partitioning plan. We represent the allocated resources by intercepting and aggregating them into a frequency graph. We aim to balance the load across servers and reduce the number of agent transfers by determining the frequency of interactions between agents and objects. We evaluate our approach with a real-world scenario and results show that this adaptive partitioning can increase the execution performance by a factor of 10 with up to 89% lower latencies than existing solutions. © 2022 ACM.

RCE: An Integration Environment for Engineering and Science

Engineering complex systems such as air- and spacecraft is a multidisciplinary effort that requires the collaboration of engineers from a multitude of specializations working in concert. Typically, each engineer uses one or more specialized software tools to analyze some data set and passes, in an ad-hoc manner, the results on to their colleagues who require these results as input for their respective tools. This process is time-consuming, error-prone, and not replicable. To alleviate this problem, we present RCE (Remote Component Environment), an open-source application developed primarily at DLR, that enables its users to intuitively integrate disciplinary tools, to define dependencies between them via an easy-to-use graphical interface, and to execute the resulting multidisciplinary engineering workflow. All data produced are stored centrally for provenance, subsequent analysis, and post-processing. Hence, RCE makes it easy for collaborating engineers to contribute their individual disciplinary tools to a multidisciplinary design or analysis, and simplifies the analysis of the workflow's results. There are situations where data relevant to machine learning problems are distributed across multiple locations that cannot share the data due to regulatory, competitiveness, or privacy reasons. Machine learning approaches that require data to be copied to a single location are hampered by the challenges of data sharing. Federated Learning (FL) is a promising approach to learn a joint model over all the available data across silos. In many cases, the sites participating in a federation have different data distributions and computational capabilities. In these heterogeneous environments existing approaches exhibit poor performance: synchronous FL protocols are communication efficient, but have slow learning convergence and high energy cost;conversely, asynchronous FL protocols have faster convergence with lower energy cost, but higher communication. In this work, we introduce a novel energy-efficient Semi-Synchronous Federated Learning protocol that mixes local models periodically with minimal idle time and fast convergence. We show through extensive experiments over established benchmark datasets in the computer-vision domain as well as in real-world biomedical settings that our approach significantly outperforms previous work in data and computationally heterogeneous environments.

Several choices have to be made during the design process of active tag based systems. Since the number of properties that must be decided before production and wide-scale deployment is relatively high, the use of real experiments in the design phase may be prohibitive. We propose the use of emulation for performing large-scale experiments with active tag based systems easily and in a repeatable manner. Such experiments can be used to validate the behavior of the system, and to decide the values for various system parameters. We illustrate this approach by experimental results obtained with an emulation framework that we designed and implemented for a pedestrian localization active tag based system.

End users execute today on their smart phones different kinds of mobile applications like calendar apps or high-end mobile games, differing in local resource usage. Utilizing local resources of a smart phone heavily, like playing high-end mobile games, drains its limited energy resource in few hours. To prevent the limited energy resource from a quick exhaustion, smart phones benefit from executing resource-intensive application parts on a remote server in the cloud (code offloading). During the remote execution on the remote server, a smart phone waits in idle mode until it receives a result. However, code offloading introduces computation and communication overhead, which decreases the energy efficiency and induces monetary cost. For instance, sending or receiving execution state information to or from a remote server consumes energy. Moreover, executing code on a remote server instance in a commercial cloud causes monetary cost. To keep consumed energy and monetary cost low, we present in this paper the concept of remote-side caching for code offloading, which increases the efficiency of code offloading. The remote-side cache serves as a collective storage of results for already executed application parts on remote servers, avoiding the repeated execution of previously run application parts. The smart phone queries the remote-side cache for corresponding results of resource-intensive application parts. In case of a cache hit, the smart phone gets immediately a result and continues the application execution. Otherwise, it migrates the application part and waits for a result of the remote execution. We show in our evaluation that the use of a remote-side cache decreases energy consumption and monetary cost for mobile applications by up to 97% and 99%, respectively.

This demonstration shows the implementation of a cooperative and coordinated robotic task in the soccer domain. Two Sony AIBO robots are placed on a soccer field with the task of passing a ball (Figure 1). Initially the robots search for the ball, and when they have located it, they exchange their local information about its position. This information is used to decide which robot will pass the ball (i.e. take the Passer role) and which robot will intercept it (i.e. take the Receiver role). The Passer robot reaches the ball, grabs it and turns to the Receiver. In the meanwhile, the Receiver moves to a predefined distance to the Passer. When both the Passer and Receiver robots have completed these tasks, they synchronize and execute, respectively, a pass and an intercept behavior. At the end of the execution, a final synchronization is performed. The robots exchange information about the outcome of the behavior, and they repeat the plan.

This study describes a preliminary research on Information Retrieval (IR) systems. We developed a prototype tool that runs on a master-slave model and uses distributed processing in order to decentralize the workload while retrieving information from the Internet. Later, its viability is demonstrated with a set of executions and the discussion follows with an analysis of the master process overload versus the number of slaves connected.
