A Compound-Cavity distributed feedback laser With Bandwidth Over 50 GHz Based on Uniform Gratings

We present a two-segment compound-cavity directly-modulated 1577 nm distributed feedback (DFB) laser based on identical epitaxial layer (IEL) scheme and uniform gratings. The laser exhibits a small-signal 3-dB bandwidth exceeding 50 GHz, and a modulation rate of 144 Gbps is implemented via four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4) format. The eye diagrams remain open after transmission through 2.5 km single-mode fiber (SMF), demonstrating a great potential for 800 GbE applications or even higher data rates.

Noise cancellation in distributed feedback laser based interrogation system for twin grating accelerometer

In this paper, we demonstrate a noise cancellation method for suppressing laser frequency noise in distributed feedback laser based system for interrogating a twin fiber Bragg grating based accelerometer. A simple method has been developed by studying the noise characteristics of the sensing photodiode and the reference photodiode, used in standard intensity based wavelength demodulation system. Proposed method could be able to reduce deterministic noise components to about 20% of the original noise components without using any complex feedback mechanism to stabilize the laser.

This letter reports on the results of room-temperature electrically injected GaN-based distributed feed-back laser diodes (LDs) grown on Si. A hundred pairs of high-order sidewall gratings were prepared by dry-etching along the ridge to select only single mode, and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide polishing technology was adopted to remove the etching damage and make the sidewall smooth and steep. As a result, we have successfully fabricated GaN-based distributed feedback LDs grown on Si with a side-mode suppression ratio of similar to 10 dB. Further analysis revealed that the fabrication of gratings reduced the injection efficiency and increased the optical loss, which deteriorated the device performance. Further improvements of the laser material quality and device fabrication are underway.

Terahertz (THz) spectrum (100 GHz-10 THz) is considered the next frontier in the design of high-speed wireless communication systems. While the high-power THz sources have commercially become available, it increases the possibility of developing THz jammers to disrupt the THz communication link. In this work, we present the photonics-based THz communication system and demonstrate the frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technique which acts against the single/multi-tone jamming attack in the frequency window of 110 GHz-170 GHz. We characterized the system and demonstrated the THz FHSS technique in a real-time communication system by transmitting a 6 Gbps NRZ signal in wireless link within the link distance of 1.75 m. We experimentally found that the measured bit error rate in the THz FHSS system is the time average of the measured BER for individual carrier frequencies within the hopping frequency window. By combining with the forward error correction codes and by using the tunable filter in the receiver, we believe that the proposed technique will offer a novel and compact solution against the single/multi-tone jammer for high-bit rate THz communications.

Zigzag edged nanographenes such as peri-acenoacenes are promising materials for organic lasers, but the effects of heteroatom doping on the electronic properties and gain medium performance remain unclear. Herein, the facile synthesis of a new 1,2-oxaborine (BO) doped peri-tetracenotetracene derivative, the bis(1,2-oxaborine)peri-tetracenotetracene (BOTT-Mes), is reported. X-ray crystallographic analysis confirms the BO-doped planar structure and the nonexistence of intermolecular pi-pi stacking in solid state. Compared with the all-carbon peri-tetracenotetracene derivative (TT-Ar), the BO-doped BOTT-Mes exhibits more disrupted pi-conjugation at the BO sites, a lower-lying highest occupied molecular orbital, and a larger energy gap. Due to its rigid skeleton and nonaggregative feature, it displays well-resolved absorption and emission spectra with a small Stokes shift (8 nm) and high photoluminescence quantum yield (80%) when it is dispersed in a polystyrene (PS) thin film. Notably, 1,2-oxaborine doping improves the film amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) performance, with a lower ASE threshold (Eth-ASE = 66 mu J cm(-2)) as compared to the TT-Ar doped PS film (Eth-ASE = 100 mu J cm(-2)). Furthermore, a low threshold (22 mu J cm(-2)) solution-processed distributed feedback laser is fabricated, indicating the feasibility of using BOTT-Mes as gain medium for practical laser applications.

High-power eight-wavelength distributed feedback laser array with 100 GHz spacing using grating reflector

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-power eight-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser array with 100 GHz spacing using the grating reflector (GR). The GR, which is a uniform sampled grating, can provide light reflection instead of high reflection (HR) facet coating. Thus, the front and rear facets are both coated with anti-reflection coatings (AR/AR) to avoid the influence of a random grating phase at the HR facet. Therefore, more output power, better single-longitudinal-mode operation, and higher wavelength precision can be simultaneously achieved, compared with traditional DFB lasers with HR/AR facet coatings. The maximum output power and side mode suppression ratio of the fabricated eight-channel GR-DFB laser array as high as 70 mW and 55 dB can be achieved, which may benefit wavelength division multiplexing transmission systems, gas sensors, optical computing systems, and microwave photonic signal processing.

Demonstration of a violet-distributed feedback laser with fairly small temperature dependence in current-light characteristics

We have developed a GaN-based distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) with the detuning of +5 nm to obtain a smaller temperature dependence of the threshold current. We found that the current-light characteristics almost overlapped up to 300 mW between 25 degrees C and 80 degrees C. The estimated characteristic temperature is about 2550 K. These indicate that our DFB-LD is promising for applications that require small temperature dependence in the output power and oscillation wavelength at constant operation current without precise temperature control.

A specific optimized configuration for low threshold organic semiconductor laser based on a holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) transmission grating was demonstrated. Here the organic semiconductor films and phase separated liquid crystal (LC) molecules were oriented along the direction of the HPDLC grating grooves. The influence of the organic semiconductor chain orientation and the excitation polarization on the optical properties of the materials has been investigated. Especially, when polymer chain orientation, LC molecules and pump light polarization are consistent with the direction of the grating grooves, the performance of the outgoing laser is greatly improved. Up to 9.78% conversion efficiency with a threshold lower to 0.12 mu J/pulse can be obtained, indicating their potential for high-performance organic optoelectronics.

Edge-Emitting Silicon Nanocrystal distributed feedback laser with Extremely Low Exciton Threshold

The successful integration of a laser into the silicon photonic chip has long been the holy grail of silicon photonics. Among the various methods addressing this challenge, silicon nanocrystal (Si NC) lasers remain a tempting but debated topic due to their complex carrier recombination process. Here we demonstrate an optically pumped edge-emitting first-order distributed feedback Si NC laser by utilizing a versatile nanoimprint lithography method incorporating a composite working stamp. Upon femtosecond pulsed laser pumping, we find that the lasing threshold in exciton number per NC down to 0.021 is unusually low compared with other quantum dot gain materials. To understand this interesting behavior, we have performed systematic transient spectrum experiments on its photoluminescence and transient absorption aimed at revealing the role of self-trapping states in the carrier recombination process. Our results suggest that such states in well passivated Si NCs can be regarded as metastable states that intercept hot electrons and with a time delay, release them back to the conduction band, acting like electron reservoirs that continuously feed the active lasing state as its upper levels. In this perspective, we conclude that the surface states can benefit the buildup of population inversion and lead to inhibition of the Auger process as they temporarily localize the hot electrons outside the NC core and have verified our conclusion by numerical and experimental results, respectively. Our results provide critical information on processes related to Si NC lasing and will aid attempts at Si lasers on-chip.

In this work, we investigate the generation of light in a distributed feedback (DFB) laser composed of periodically arranged layers of hyperbolic medium and active material forming a 1D photonic hypercrystal (PHC). The scope of our study covers the analysis of laser action in the presence of different types of dispersion that are achievable in a hyperbolic medium. Using the example of a PHC structure consisting of graphene-based hyperbolic medium, we demonstrate the possibility of controlling laser action by tuning effective dispersion. Our analysis reveals the possibility of obtaining a single-frequency generation with high side-mode suppression and controllable wavelength of operation. Moreover, we present a new mechanism for the modulation of laser amplitude arising from voltage-controllable dispersion of hyperbolic medium.
