In this paper, using an autonomous and distributed approach, we aim at realizing a control mechanism, which is scalable in terms of the network size, for joint optimization of the multi-path routing and bandwidth allocation (MRBA). Multi-path routing is to determine multiple paths from the source node to the sink node such that the traffic demand by the source node can be successfully transferred to the sink node as well as the total network cost can be minimized. Bandwidth allocation is to decide the amount of bandwidth assigned to the flow at every link along multi-paths from the source node to the sink node, which are chosen by the multi-path routing. In this paper, we propose a distributed and scalable flowcontrol mechanism called DFC-BP (distributed flow control with Backward Propagation), which simultaneously solves multi-path routing and bandwidth allocation. DFC-BP is an autonomous and decentralized hop-by-hop flowcontrol mechanism which can minimize the total network cost utilizing the backward propagation from downstream nodes to upstream nodes. We also investigate the effectiveness of DFC-BP in terms of efficiency, transient performance, adaptability, and parameter sensitivity through simulation experiments. Our findings include that the total network cost realized by DFC-BP is comparable to that by a centralized heuristic algorithm, and that DFC-BP quickly adapts to the occurrence of multiple link failures.

Today's factory floors are a distributed system of heterogeneous components. They exist a high degree of production customization to cater for this most factory floor systems are being adapted for customization. Most current manufacturing communication systems do not have a flexible architecture to serve the changeable and dynamic market needs thus presenting a research gap in flexible communication. This paper discusses a middleware communication system that allows for flexible optimal control of information flow in a fixture based production system. The architecture of the system aims to integrate seamlessly a heterogeneous factory environment, for autonomous monitoring and control of information on the factory floor.

We present an algorithm for constrained network flowcontrol in the presence of an unknown demand. Our algorithm is decentralized in the sense that it is implemented by a team of agents, each controlling just the flow on a single arc of the network based only on the buffer levels at the nodes at the extremes of the arc, while ignoring the actions of other agents and the network topology. We prove that our algorithm is also stabilizing and steady-state optimal. Specifically, we show that it asymptotically produces the minimum-norm flow. We finally generalize our algorithm to networks with a linear dynamics and we prove that certain least-square optimality properties still hold. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes a new industrial case on automation, for large-scale systems with high environmental impact: the mining ventilation control systems. Ventilation control is essential for the operation of a mine in terms of safety (CO and NO, regulation) and energy optimization. We first discuss a novel regulation architecture, highlighting the interest for a model-based control approach and the use of distributed sensing capabilities thanks to a wireless sensor network (WSN). We propose a new model for underground ventilation. The main components of the system dynamics are described with time-delays, transmission errors, energy losses and concentration profiles. Two different model-based control approaches, which can embody the complex dynamics of the system, are proposed. The first one resorts to a nonlinear model predictive control strategy (receding horizon) and aims to energy minimization, thanks to a continuous operation of the fans. The second one, based on a hybrid description of the model and fans operation, provides automatic verification of the wireless control thanks to abstraction techniques. These control strategies are compared with simulations, in terms of regulation efficiency, energy consumption and the need for computational capabilities. The industrial case description and control strategies open new vistas for the development of global system approaches that allow for the optimization of energy consumption of complex large-scale systems. This letter proposes a deterministic packet marking scheme that estimates the maximum link price on a communication path. The proposed scheme is simple and W-compatible because it uses two-bit Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) field and IP identification (IPid) field in the standard IP header for the estimation. Through simulations using real IP packet traces, we show that our scheme indeed works as designed with small estimation errors, and thus enables existing max-min flowcontrol algorithms to serve their purpose without the need of separate out-of-band control packets to carry link prices.
