This paper investigates a distributed function computation setting where the underlying network is a rooted directed tree and where the root wants to compute a function of the sources of information available at the nodes of the network. The main result provides the rate region for an arbitrary function under the assumption that the sources satisfy a general criterion. This criterion is satisfied, in particular, when the sources are independent.

River ice jams can cause extreme flood events with major socio-economic and ecological impacts. A major practical question is how to quantify and assess ice-jam flood risk. Ideally, this question can be answered by means of historical ice-influenced water level peaks. More commonly, however, the available historical information is scarce and determination of ice-jam flood frequencies or probabilities must rely on a synthetic method. After noting that empirical evidence does not support the assumption of discrete stage outcomes, which is central to the existing methodology, a new synthetic method is developed. It hinges on the fact that the peak stage can take on any value between discharge-dependent envelopes and is thence called the distributed-function method, or DFM, and successfully tested by means of four case studies. It is shown further that the DFM produces more realistic results relative to those of the existing approach. Practical limitations are common to both methods and arise primarily from the need to use the peak runoff discharge, rather than the unknown value that prevails at the time of the peak stage. Resulting errors in probability estimates are evaluated in an extreme case and shown to be both conservative and tolerable. Analysis of additional case studies is recommended as a means of enhancing the utility of the DFM. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optimization strategy for parameter sampling in the reduced basis method

The reduced basis (RB) method is an efficient technique to solve parametric partial differential equations in a multi-query context, where the solution has to be computed for many different parameter values. The RB method drastically reduces the computational time for any additional solution (during the so-called online stage) once an initial set of basis functions has been computed (during the so-called offline stage) still retaining a certified level of accuracy. The greedy algorithm is the classical sampling strategy to select parameter values that define the set of basis functions. Here, an alternative and competitive approach for choosing the parameter values is presented. The new approach is based on an optimization problem for the parameters that allows to reduce the computational complexity of the offline stage of the RB method and improve its effectiveness. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Automotive systems comprise a high number of networked safety-critical functions. Any design changes or addition of new functionality must be rigorously tested to ensure that no performance or safety issues are introduced, and this consumes a significant amount of time. Validation should be conducted using a faithful representation of the system, and so typically, a full subsystem is built for validation. We present a scalable scheme for emulating a complete cluster of automotive embedded compute units on an FPGA, with accelerated network communication using custom physical level interfaces. With these interfaces, we can achieve acceleration of system emulation by 8x or more, with a systematic way of exploring real-world issues like jitter, network delays, and data corruption, among others. By using the same communication infrastructure as in a real deployed system, this validation is closer to the requirements of standards compliance. This approach also enables hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation, allowing rapid prototyping of distributed functions, including changes in network topology and parameters, and modification of time-triggered schedules without physical hardware modification. We present an implementation of this framework on the Xilinx ML605 evaluation board that integrates six FlexRay automotive functions to demonstrate the potential of the framework.

IEEE 802.11 wireless network has spread widely during the past few years. This type of network employees a carrier-sense multiple access with collision-avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme with exponential back-off procedure. In tills paper, we present a performance analysis of IEEE 802.11 channel access mechanism. The analysis captures the details of the distributed function Coordination (DCF), such as the contention window size, inter-frame spacing, and packet exchange sequence, and obtains the throughput for such a network with multiple number of stations. The throughput is obtained when the station packet load varies. Two packet access mechanism namely, the basic access mechanism and the RTS/CTS access mechanism are considered in the throughput analysis. Simulation results are presented to verify the analysis.

In this paper, the theoretical basis of eliminating the effect of time jitter by deconvolution method is given. It indicates that the impulse response of the compensative filter is the probability density function (PDF) of the time jitter with negative variable, p(-t), and meanwhile, verifies the feasibility of Gans's empirical method when the distributed function of the jitter is symmetric and the mean is 0. In the end, the mean and the variance of the system output caused by non-ideal averaging are also analysed.

A broad review of the phenomena of morphogenesis and of brain function, and of the history of research in these two areas, suggests that there are quite striking similarities between the two sets of biological phenomena. Among other things, both reflect the interaction of internally complex components at several levels of organization, display variance as an essential characteristic, and incorporate information from the environment. It is argued that reductionist approaches are inadequate to deal with fundamental problems of either morphogenesis or brain function, and alternative foundations for research strategy and tactics are discussed. Attention is also given to the question of why morphogenesis and brain function are so similar, and it is suggested that this may reflect the existence of rules of information acquisition, transmission, and storage to which both are subject. Variance, it is argued, is an essential component of information acquisition processes, and hence of biological integrity, at all levels of organization.

TREX/MCS: A Fault Tolerant Multicomputer System

A class of multicomputer system which is a coordinated set of minicomputers interconnected one another is presented. Interconnections between computers are made through the shared memory, the memory bus links, and multi-access controllers of the peripheral devices. More than forty of the multicomputer systems have been commercially used for industrial applications. The paper describes the concept of the system from the aspect of fault tolerance.
