This study aims to optimize power flow in distribution network systems using artificial intelligence, specifically the Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA), integrated with a self-healing system to improve the reliability and efficiency of power distribution. The research focuses on mitigating common power distribution issues such as under-voltage and over-voltage by strategically placing distributed generators (DG) within the network. A modified IEEE 15-bus system is used as a test case to evaluate the proposed method. The FPA algorithm is chosen for its effectiveness in solving multi-objective optimization problems, incorporating both global and local pollination strategies. The objective function considers total power losses and voltage deviations to ensure optimal DG placement. Simulation results demonstrate that the combined application of FPA and self-healing mechanisms significantly reduces power losses and voltage fluctuations, enhancing overall network stability. This research provides a robust and efficient solution for modern power distribution systems, improving their adaptability to dynamic operational conditions. © 2025 IEEE.

In order to improve the efficiency of distributed generator configuration calibration, a distributed generator configuration calibration method based on attention mechanism and temporal convolutional networkbidirectional gated recurrent unit is proposed from the aspects of type identification and capacity prediction. First, the method utilizes TCN to extract features from power generation and consumption data to identify and output the types of distributed generators, followed by inputting the extracted feature matrix to capacity prediction. Then, on the basis of temporal convolutional network, a bidirectional gated loop unit and an attention mechanism are introduced for mining the generation and consumption data matrices of different distributed generators, the intrinsic correlation of different features, and highlighting the important information through the assignment. Based on the seven distributed generators data in a place in China, the experimental results show the effectiveness of the constructed prediction model;the comparison test results with traditional machine learning and deep learning prediction models show that the proposed method has higher calibration accuracy in type identification and capacity prediction.

Recently, there has been a great interest in the integration of distributed generation units at the distribution level. This requires new analytical tools for understanding system performance. This paper presents a simple methodology for placing a distributed generator with a view to increasing the loadability of the distribution system. The effectiveness of the proposed placement technique is demonstrated in a test distribution system that consists of 30 nodes and 32 segments. Other technical benefits of the distributed generator at that location and other locations are also studied and compared.

Flexible Virtual Synchronous generator Control for distributed generator with Adaptive Inertia

distributed generators using power electronic converter interface have no inherent inertial response similar to that from the rotating mass of conventional synchronous generators. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) emulates the behavior of the synchronous generator including system inertia to improve system dynamic performance. Unlike a real synchronous generator, using VSG with proper design, the equivalent inertia of the distributed generator can be controlled in a wider range. In this paper, a flexible virtual synchronous generator (FVSG) control strategy is proposed, with adaptive inertia contributing to a fast and smooth inertial response. The frequency change rate is designed as an adaptive inertia coefficient to flexibly accommodate system inertia with frequency fluctuation rate. Compared with the conventional VSG control, based on fixed inertia coefficient, both inertia support and oscillation suppression are achieved in the proposed control scheme. Moreover, the principles of control parameters design are analyzed in details. Thus, the dynamic response of the system frequency can be substantially improved by the FVSG. Both Matlab/Simulink simulations and prototype tests are implemented to validate the proposed FVSG control strategy on improving system dynamic frequency performance.

The robust curve-fitting based method for coordinated voltage regulation with distributed generator and OLTC in distribution network

The voltage violation in distribution networks may occur frequently due to the rising integration of flexible demands and supplies. In this paper, the reactive power of the inverter -based distributed generator (DG) and OLTC tap position are adjusted for voltage regulation in coordinated manner. Firstly, the reactive power adjustment for the voltage regulation has been car-ried out by use of the DG reactive power capacity. Afterwards, the tap position of the OLTC has been changed to regulate the bus voltage that has a voltage violation problem in the case of insuf-ficient reactive power capacity of the DG inverter. The value of the distributed generator reactive power output that regulates the voltage on the bus that has a voltage violation is found with pro-posed curve-fitting method and tested with the Grid Search, Artificial Bee Colony methods. The proposed method derives mathematical expressions between DG reactive power output and bus voltages as quadratic equations by curve-fitting technique. Moreover, addition to inherent upper and lower reactive power limits of the DG inverter, they are determined by the proposed curve -fitting based technique while considering voltage constraints on all buses. Proposed method is much faster than other two methods because of its plain structure and gives adequate accurate results.& COPY;2023 THE AUTHORS. Impact of distributed generator controllers on the coordination of overcurrent relays in microgrid

In the presence of distributed generators (DGs) the fault current sensed by relay in the forward direction is larger than that in the reverse direction. Thus, it is required to have different relay settings for both forward and reverse directions. This paper investigates the impact of DG controller operating modes on the coordination of conventional and dual setting overcurrent relays (OCRs). The different DG control modes are voltage control mode (VCM) and current control mode (CCM). A comparative study of protection coordination is presented in both the operating modes of the DG. This scheme is tested on a 3-bus meshed system and the IEEE 34-node distribution system in which an electronically interfaced DG is connected. The protection coordination problem is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem and the optimal settings of OCRs are determined by using a genetic algorithm.

Optimal sizing and location of SPV (solar photovoltaic) based MLDG (multiple location distributed generator) in distribution system for loss reduction, voltage profile improvement with economical benefits

In this paper an analytical approach is used for optimal size and location of SPV (solar photovoltaic) based MLDG (multiple location distributed generator) in primary distribution system. The main objective of this research includes power loss reduction and voltage profile improvement along with economic benefits. DGs (distributed generators) are placed at single location to improve the performance of the system with respect to the power loss reduction and voltage profile improvement. For further reduction of power loss and enhancement of voltage profile, the estimated optimal size of a DG at single location serve as a constraint in locating the SPV based MLDG in the primary distribution system. The proposed approach are tested exhaustively on an IEEE 33 and IEEE 69 bus systems and it is found that the power loss reduction and voltage profile improvement is 57% and 0.943908 to 0.977294 pu respectively for IEEE 33 bus system where as it is 29% and 0.94882 to 0.95727 for IEEE 69 bus system as compared to the single DG placement. Obtained results are compared with the base value and found better as compared to the other techniques. From this research, it is revealed that the placements of MLDG are more significant and economical as compared to single DG placement. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Value-based distributed generator placements for service quality improvements

distributed generator (DG) resources are small, self-contained electric generating plants that can provide power to homes, businesses or industrial facilities in distribution feeders. They can be used to reduce power loss and improve service reliability. However, the values of DGs are largely dependent on their types, sizes and locations as they were installed in distribution feeders. A value-based method is proposed in this paper to enhance the reliability and obtain the benefits for DG placement. The benefits of DG placement described in this paper include power cost saving, power loss reduction, and reliability enhancement. The costs of DG placement include the investment, maintenance and operating costs. The proposed value-based method tries to find the best tradeoff between the costs and benefits of DG placement and then find the optimal types of DG and their corresponding locations and sizes in distribution feeders. The derived formulations are solved by a genetic algorithm based method. Test results show that with proper types, sizes and installation site selection, DG placement can be used to improve system reliability, reduce customer interruption costs and save power cost;as well as enabling electric utilities to obtain the maximal economical benefits. A study of centralized voltage profile control of distribution network considering dynamics of distributed generator

In a future distribution network, it will be difficult to maintain system voltage because a large number of distributed generators are introduced into the system. The authors have previously proposed a voltage profile control method using power factor control of distributed generators. When all information on the system is available, an ideal stationary solution of control orders to distributed generators is given by an optimization calculation. However, it is difficult to apply optimization control in real time because a long calculation time is required for the optimization. Therefore, it is possible that a voltage change may occur before the power factor control has finished. Thus, in this paper, we develop a new control method which can save the excessive voltage changes by taking into consideration the controlled response time of distributed generators. Coordinated Voltage and Reactive Power Control Strategy with distributed generator for Improving the Operational Efficiency

This study proposes a voltage and reactive coordinative control strategy with distributed generator (DG) in a distribution power system. The aim is to determine the optimum dispatch schedules for an on-load tap changer (OLTC), distributed generator settings and all shunt capacitor switching on the load and DG generation profile in a day. The proposed method minimizes the real power losses and improves the voltage profile using squared deviations of bus voltages. The results indicate that the proposed method reduces the real losses and voltage fluctuations and improve receiving power factor. This paper proposes coordinated voltage and reactive power control methods that adjust optimal control values of capacitor banks, OLTC, and the AVR of DGs by using a voltage sensitivity factor (VSF) and dynamic programming (DP) with branch-and-bound (B&B) method. To avoid the computational burden, we try to limit the possible states to 24 stages by using a flexible searching space at each stage. Finally, we will show the effectiveness of the proposed method by using operational cost of real power losses and voltage deviation factor as evaluation index for a whole day in a power system with distributed generators.
