Uniform image partitioning based on spiral architecture plays an important role in parallel imageprocessing in many aspects such as uniform data partitioning, load balancing, zero data exchange between the processing nodes et al. However, when the number of partitions is not the power of seven like 7, 49, every sub-image except one is split into a few fragments which are mixed together. We could not tell which fragments belong to which subimage. It is an unacceptable flaw to parallel imageprocessing. This paper proposes a method to resolve the problem mentioned above. From the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method correctly identifies the fragments belonging to the same subimage and successfully collects them together to be a complete subimage. Then, these subimages can be distributed into the different processing nodes for further processing.

The Active Appearance Model (AAM) is a class of deformable models, which, in the segmentation process, integrates the priori knowledge on the shape and the texture and deformation of the structures studied. This model in its sequential form is computationally intensive and operates on large data sets. This paper presents another framework to implement the standard version of the AAM model. We suggest a distributed and parallel approach justified by the characteristics of the model and their potentialities. We introduce a schema for the representation of the overall model and we study of operations that can be parallelized. This approach is intended to exploit the benefits build in the area of advanced imageprocessing.

Hybrid clouds are combinations of private, community and/or public clouds, and allow the creation of "cloud bursting" deployment models, in which part of the data processing is done in a private cloud and resources from public clouds are used when needed. This model is particularly interesting for CPU-intensive scientific data processing. In order to help determine in which conditions part of the whole of a large data processing task must be sent to a public or private cloud, dynamic benchmarks are required. In this paper we propose an imageprocessing-based test bench that monitors the performance of the clouds resources to gather useful statistics and to determine which resource should be used for a specific task, in order to reduce costs and running time.

Although current wireless sensor network platforms have limited on-board resources for solving highly complex computer vision problems, we show that by splitting the processing costs between the sensor node and a powerful backend, we can achieve better classification results. Earlier research on the Spiral Architecture focused on the properties of undistorted translation, rotation and scaling. The research reported here uses the properties of the pixel address labelling scheme. The property of interest is the physical proximity of the hexagonal pixels with neighbouring addresses. Rectangular systems may, for instance, have vertical physically adjacent pixels but the address distance is the length of a scan line. It is demonstrated that in the Spiral Architecture, unlike the rectangular system, many images have the property that neighbouring pixels have similar intensities thus giving opportunities for better compression.

Also, the greatly increased image data analysis is further emphasizing the importance of large-scale image data processing. In this regard, this study proposed and designed a distribution system using Kafka. For high-speed processing of data, black box image frames were distributed to several nodes using Kafka, a real-time message distribution processing system. Moreover, by setting the frame of black box image as input to each node, the localization of car license plates through imageprocessing, and segmented character recognition were explored.

This work analyzes the computation distribution in applications generated by a multilevel knowledge-based system for imageprocessing called SVEX.(1) This distribution has been carried out on a heterogeneous workstation network, trying to take advantage of the availability and frequent infra-utilization of this computational resource. The parallelization is based on message-passing tool Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM).(2) Firstly SVEX and its computational scheme are described, detailing the structure of the first level (the Pixel Processor). Then different distribution paradigms are studied, selecting for its implementation the parallelism based on the data. Considering this alternative, the research addresses two fundamental problems: analysis of basic load-balancing schemes and obtaining-a model for predicting parallelization behavior as new machines are added to the computational network. The results produced in a series of experiments permit the comparison of load-balancing schemes and the validation of the proposed model. The experiments include the processing of both static images and sequences.
