This paper presents the results of a numerical study conducted to assess the effects of site-specific arrays of simulated ground motions from large magnitude earthquakes on the response of distributed infrastructure. Focus is laid on specific ground-motion features that are known to largely affect the response of long- period structures, including pseudo-spectral acceleration (PSA), peak ground velocity and displacement (PGV and PGD), fling step, and impulsive characteristics. The study is conducted on a detailed numerical model representative of the West San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge developed in the OpenSees environment and a suite of fifteen realizations of an M(w)7 Hayward Fault strike-slip earthquake generated in SW4. The realizations differ from each other for the rupture model and depth of the fault plane. A core component of the study is the rigorous evaluation of the simulated ground motions based on the use of ground motion models (GMMs). The main objective is to verify the realistic character of the motions for their utilization in the risk assessments of distributed infrastructure, yet recognizing that the physics-based models are herein utilized to simulate events for which the GMMs are not well constrained. Therefore, insight into the interpretation of such comparisons is also provided. Results show a close agreement between the simulated motions and several GMMs, across multiple intensity measures. Finally, the preliminary results of nonlinear dynamic simulations carried out on the bridge model are discussed. Emphasis is laid on the influence of both between-events (multiple realizations at one location) and within-event (one realization at multiple locations) ground-motion variability on the structure response statistics.

A distributed IoT infrastructure to Test and Deploy Real-Time Demand Response in Smart Grids

In this paper, we present a novel distributed framework for real-time management and co-simulation of demand response (DR) in smart grids. Our solution provides a (near-) real-time co-simulation platform to validate new DR-policies exploiting Internet-of-Things approach performing software-in-the-loop. Hence, the behavior of real-world power systems can be emulated in a very realistic way and different DR-policies can be easily deployed and/or replaced in a plug-and-play fashion, without affecting the rest of the framework. In addition, our solution integrates real Internet-connected smart devices deployed at customer premises and along the smart grid to retrieve energy information and send actuation commands. Thus, the framework is also ready to manage DR in a real-world smart grid. This is demonstrated on a realistic smart grid with a test case DR-policy.

A Flexible distributed infrastructure for Real-Time Cosimulations in Smart Grids

Due to the increasing penetration of distributed generation, storage, electric vehicles, and new information communication technologies, distribution networks are evolving toward the smart grid paradigm. For this reason, new control strategies, algorithms, and technologies need to be tested and validated before their actual field implementation. In this paper, we present a novel modular distributed infrastructure, based on real-time simulation, for multipurpose smart grid studies. The different components of the infrastructure are described, and the system is applied to a case study based on a real urban district located in northern Italy. The presented infrastructure is shown to be flexible and useful for different and multidisciplinary smart grid studies.

Planning and developing the future Smart City is becoming mandatory due to the need of moving forward to a more sustainable society. To foster this transition an accurate simulation of energy production from renewable sources, such as Photovoltaic Panels (PV), is necessary to evaluate the impact on the grid. In this paper, we present a distributed infrastructure that simulates the PV production and evaluates the integration of such systems in the grid considering data provided by smart-meters. The proposed solution is able to model the behaviour of PV systems solution exploiting GIS representation of rooftops and real meteorological data. Finally, such information is used to feed a real-time distribution network simulator.

This project arises from the need to redesign the main technological infrastructure of the mining company. Current centralized infrastructure is obsolete and is no longer reliable and productive for the company. Currently, it is not possible for the network to facilitate the design of new technological solutions (installation of new servers, virtualization, storage networks, the configuration of advanced protocols, new databases, load balancing of VLANs) and even not possible to add new sites connected to the fiber network. Required to move to a distributed infrastructure to improve the management of various network services. The benefit to the business community, from simple users to managers, will be very noticeable. The speed for their everyday processes, the overall availability of the network services by designing redundant and fault tolerant network, the agile connection between the headquarters of the company and the Internet will be important benefits.

The information explosion drives enterprises and individuals to rent cloud computing infrastructure for their applications in the cloud. However, the agreements between cloud computing providers and clients are often inefficient. We propose an agent-based auto-negotiation system for resource scheduling using fuzzy logic. Our method completes a one-to-one auto-negotiation process and generates optimal offers for providers and clients. We compare the impact of different member functions, fuzzy rule sets, and negotiation scenarios on the offers to optimize the system. Our proposed method efficiently utilizes resources and offers interpretability, high flexibility, and customization. We successfully train machine learning models to replace the fuzzy negotiation system, improving processing speed. The article also highlights potential future improvements to the proposed system and machine learning models. All codes and data are available as an open source repository.

Conditional hazard for simplified multi-site seismic hazard and risk analyses

The joint probability distribution of different intensity measures (IMs)$( {IMs} )$ at different sites in one earthquake is needed to define the stochastic process regulating the exceedance (in time) of the IMs$IMs$ at the ensemble of the sites, which in turn is a funding element of the so-called multi-site probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (MSPSHA). The simplest model for the joint distribution of the IMs$IMs$ in one seismic event requires the mean vector and the covariance matrix of the IMs$IMs$ at all sites, conditional to the magnitude and location of the earthquake, which may need a large amount of data to be calibrated. The conditional hazard (CH) approach, originally developed for single-site surrogate vector-valued probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, may be a simplified option for MSPSHA, as it explicitly models only part of the covariance matrix of the IMs$IMs$ at the sites, while the rest forcefully follows the working assumptions. The presented paper compares the CH approach for MSPSHA against the benchmark in which the complete covariance matrix is modelled, using a testbed in which one-hundred sites are considered. When the comparison metric is the probability of a given number of IM$IM$ exceedances observed at the sites in some time intervals, it is found that CH is a viable alternative to MSPSHA, although the degree of approximation is sensitive to which and how many IMs$IMs$ are considered (e.g., which spectral acceleration). When the analysis is taken all the way to the risk, considering the fragilities of a portfolio of hypothetical buildings, and taking as the metric the probability of observing a given number of structural failures in a time interval, it is found that the approximation introduced by CH with respect to the benchmark is further reduced.

Characteristics of Vertical Ground Motions and Their Effect on the Seismic Response of Bridges in the Near-Field: A State-of-the-Art Review

Despite the evidence from past earthquakes and several numerical investigations demonstrating the detrimental impact of vertical ground motions (VGMs) on the integrity of bridge structures, incorporating their effects into seismic assessment and design procedures has traditionally been given limited consideration. Current codes utilize rather simplistic approaches to account for the concurrent effects of vertical and horizontal motions in structural performance evaluations, potentially leading to unconservative estimates of structural demands. This paper reviews the main features of VGMs and their effect on the seismic response of bridges. The methods and empirical models available to estimate vertical motions for design purposes are discussed, and research gaps and related research needs are identified. Finally, the emerging role of physics-based ground-motion simulations, as well as their limitations, in supporting future research and informing the development of simplified design procedures is examined. The main areas of interest for future research are identified in the need to carry out systematic sensitivity studies to gain insight into the main earthquake parameters that influence key VGMs features, understand the influence of soil nonlinearities on VGMs amplitude and frequency content, inform the development of empirical models that cover a range of site conditions and source-to-site distances where current models are poorly constrained, generate arrays of motions to update coherency models to properly inform the analysis of distributed infrastructure, investigate the impulsive character of VGMs, and assess the approximations made in estimating VGMs with 1D site response analyses. Specific focus is laid on large-magnitude earthquakes in the near-field.

Assessment of the Seismic Demands Posed to Suspension Bridges in the Near Field with Site-Specific Arrays of Simulated Ground Motions

A key component of infrastructure seismic risk assessment is the execution of nonlinear time-history analyses with a suite of selected ground motions scaled to site-specific spectra. When interested in the evaluation of distributed systems residing near major active faults, such an approach is challenged by the scarcity of records adequately incorporating region and site-specific features known to impact the nonlinear response of distributed infrastructure substantially (pulses, spectral shape, spatial variability). This paper assesses the differences in the seismic demand posed to a suspension bridge as obtained from real ground motions selected based on state-of-the-art methods and arrays of site-specific simulated ground motions generated from physics-based wave-propagation models. The objective is to characterize the biases in structural response estimates introduced by the use of real ground motions in code-compliant approaches. A total of 15 realizations of an M7 Hayward fault earthquake and a detailed nonlinear simulation model representative of the West San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge are utilized as a case study. Damage limit states associated with structural drifts are defined for each bridge component as a function of the spread of plasticity. The results indicate that the median and variability of the demands posed by the simulated motions and real ground motions scaled to the same site-specific spectra are markedly different. Evidence from this study highlights the sensitivity of complex structures to multiple characteristics of the ground motions that might be biased by current scaling methods. Finally, fundamental characteristics of the scaled records leading to differences in the bridge response are discussed providing the basis to inform current ground motion selection and scaling procedures.

Nowadays,the use of digital technologies is promoting three main characteristics of information, i.e. the volume, the modality and the frequency. Due to the amount of information generated by tools and individuals, it has been identified a critical need for the Law Enforcement Agencies to exploit this information and carry out criminal investigations in an effective way. To respond to the increasing challenges of managing huge amounts of heterogeneous data generated at high frequency, the paper outlines a modular approach adopted for the processing of information gathered from different information sources, and the extraction of knowledge to assist criminal investigation. The proposed platform provides novel technologies and efficient components for processing multimedia information in a scalable and distributed way, allowing Law Enforcement Agencies to make the analysis and a multidimensional visualization of criminal information in a single and secure point.
