SIP or Session Initiation Protocol, and Universal Plug 'n Play (UPnP) are application-layer control protocols. SIP is used for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants, through the Internet. UPnP is also a protocol developed by a vendor consortium to enable device networking and control. However, SIP lacks the necessary functionality to work with heterogeneous devices and UPnP cannot be used in a peer-to-peer paradigm. This paper introduces a hybrid protocol architecture based on SIP and UPnP, called Peer-to-Peer Control Protocol (PCP), which can be used for peer-to-peer networking of heterogeneous devices.

This paper introduces ADOORATA an object-oriented approach for developing large and complex real-time industrial automation systems (for example, production control systems, flexible manufacturing systems, robot control, etc.). The task of developing modern real-time systems cost-effectively, on time, and fulfilling prescribed quality criteria, can only be satisfactorily met by applying adequate system engineering approaches. All development phases, from requirements engineering through design, implementation, testing, until maintenance are covered within the ADOORATA approach. The paper discusses strategies for structuring the software and hardware components of industrial automation applications using real-time autonomous objects. Such structuring approach allows a representation of the application world at a very high level of abstraction. Timing requirements and behavioral specification is made within the context of application objects. Besides system's timeliness, special emphasis is cared on aspects such as maintainability, extensibility, and reusability.

This paper presents an object-oriented approach to the development of industrial automation applications. The approach covers all developments phases, from requirements engineering, through hardware and software design, to implementation. The paper discusses strategies for structuring the software and hardware components of industrial automation applications using real-time active objects. Such structuring approach allows a better representation of the application world at a high level of abstraction. Timing requirements and behavioral specification is made within the context of application objects. Besides system's timeliness, special emphasis is cared on aspects such as maintainability, and extensibility. A quantitative approach for modeling and generating variable structure distributed intelligence systems is presented. In these systems, the interactions between the objects can change depending on the task being processed. Colored Petri Nets are used as the appropriate mathematical framework for representing design requirements and for modeling the variable structures. The set of variable structures that satisfy both the design requirements and some generic constraints is characterized, and an algorithm for solving the design problem is described. An application to a non trivial example for an Air Traffic Control System is outlined.

An approach to building up a distributed expert system for planning, scheduling and fault diagnosis, integrated with the conventional flexible manufacturing control system is proposed. The structure of the developed expert system shell is described. Some preliminary results for the operation of the expert system are given.
