This paper reports an experience feedback on the design of several interactive board games distributed over several devices, a design driven by the 5W1H questions. The analysis of the games developed in reference to the theory of tabletop territoriality leads us to propose design rules which are more structuring for such games, and which remain to be confirmed.

In the area of testing communication systems, the interfaces between systems to be tested and their testers have great impact on test generation and fault detectability. Several types of such interfaces have been standardized by the International Standardization Organization (ISO). A general distributed test architecture, containing distributed interfaces, has been presented in the literature for testing distributed systems based on the Open Distributing Processing (ODP) Basic Reference Model (BRM), which is a generalized version of ISO distributed test architecture. We study in this paper the issue of test selection with respect to such a test architecture. In particular, we consider communication systems that can be modeled by finite state machines with several distributed interfaces, called ports. A test generation method is developed for generating test sequences for such finite state machines, which is based on the idea of synchronizable test sequences. We then apply this method to generate test sequences for a so-called quorum protocol. Starting from the initial effort by Sarikaya, a certain amount of work has been done for generating test sequences for finite state machines with respect to the ISO distributed test architecture, all based on the idea of modifying existing test generation methods to generate synchronizable test sequences. However, none studies the fault coverage provided by their methods. We investigate the issue of fault coverage and point out a fact that the methods given in the literature for the distributed test architecture cannot ensure the same fault coverage as the corresponding original testing methods. We also study the limitation of fault detectability in the distributed test architecture.

An interactive infrastructure allows people to have access to the parameters of an interactive environment in real time, potentially leading to an increased productivity, decrease of energy and material consumption, and generally greater satisfaction and experience. However, there is a need for a universal communication language between the elements of such an infrastructure and the real world. A language that can connect the Internet of Things, media contents, and people. The workshop will bring together a number of participants from the field of Tangible and Embedded Interaction, who have ideas, insights and experience in developing communication languages. Rather than a symposium or mini-conference format, the format for the day is that of a working group consisting experts and contributors. This working group will establish the groundwork for the interactive infrastructures language.

This paper introduces a software tool for rapid prototyping of interactive systems whose user interfaces could be distributed according to four axes defined in a design space: type of computing platform, amount of interaction surfaces, type of interaction surface, and type of user interface. This software is based on a virtual toolkit for rendering the user interfaces in a virtual world depicting the real world in which the distribution occurs. The virtual toolkit consists of a layer for rendering a concrete user interface specified in a user interface description language. This paper presents its extension to modeling the external environment in terms of the design space so as to render the context of use in which the user interfaces are distributed. For each axis, a pair of functions enables exploring the axis in decreasing and increasing order so as to explore various situations of distribution, axis by axis, or in a combined way. As the interfaces resulting from this rendering are truly executable ones, this system provides designers with an acceptable means for generating ideas about how a user interface can be distributed in a context of use, and helps to evaluate the quality of a solution at an early design stage. Four representative situations located on the design space are implemented and discussed: distribution in a multi-platform context, distribution of the workplace, ubiquitous computing, and ambient intelligence, thus proving the coverage of the design space and the capabilities of the whole system.

A microservice-based architecture for enhancing the user experience in cross-device distributed mashup UIs with multiple forms of interaction

Mobility and continuous connection entail the emergence of heterogeneous devices with multiple forms of interaction. However, it is challenging for developers and corporations to keep up with the devices and provide applications adapted to them. Besides, better user experiences attuned to users' needs and desires are increasingly in demand. User interfaces play a major role because they must be distributed through different devices and offer a customized experience for each user-device combination. We take advantage of the component-based applications easiness to build customized interfaces that can give optimal solutions to fulfill the requirements for adapting themselves to cross-device applications with multiple forms of interaction. User interaction on mashup interfaces can generate a great deal of data, which can be analyzed for improving the interaction and usefulness of the applications. In our paper, we have created a microservice-based architecture that generates datasets which contain the user behavior for further analysis. Therefore, the user experience and usability in distributed user interfaces may be improved through prediction models generated from the data. Each microservice autonomously fetches its own data and performs consistently so that it can transform datasets optimally by using feature engineering techniques. Thus, data analysis and algorithms can create accurate yet simple prediction models that provide useful knowledge to enhance the user experience. A REST API web service is added to each microservice to facilitate their communication with other microservices and/or third-party clients. The entire microservice architecture, including feature engineering and RESTful API web services for each microservice, offers an infrastructure to handle and process data interaction of cross-devices applications with multiple forms of interaction. In order to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by an increase in consumer device interoperability, we need to explore the design of multi-device systems beyond data sharing between devices. This paper presents an approach to distributed interfaces as technology supporting social interaction in a non-work environment. It consists of a collaborative music system, which in addition to bene fit from distributed music storage also distributes playback control onto several mobile devices and provides output through a common situated display. The system has been tested in three different real-life contexts in order to explore the interaction space of non-work multi-device, multi-user environments.

Large, public displays are increasingly popular in today's society. For the most part, however, these displays are purely used for information or multimedia presentation, without the possibility of interaction for viewers. On the other hand, personal mobile devices are becoming more and more ubiquitous. Though there are efforts to combine large screens with mobile devices, the approaches are mostly focused on mobiles as control devices, or they are fitted to specific applications. In this paper, we present the ModControl framework, a configurable, modular communication structure that enables large screen applications to connect with personal mobile devices and request a set of configurable modules, utilizing the device as a personalized mobile interface. The main application can easily make use of the highly sophisticated interaction features provided by modern mobile phones. This facilitates new, interactive appealing visualizations that can be actively controlled with an intuitive, unified interface by single or multiple users.

The increasing number of devices available for each person allows to create unconventional interfaces that coordinate more than one device for supporting the interaction. In this paper, we introduce a framework for designing distributable web applications, which supports moving and sharing the different parts of a user interface across different devices. We depict the architectural solution and we introduce a set of distribution patterns. In addition, we describe a concrete application of the framework for a distributable video player application.

This article describes the development and evaluation of the distributed user interface (DUI) based application called D-Pegboard Construction, to support the Pegboard Construction traditional test. This application allows therapists to evaluate the acquired brain injury. This application allows the patient to perform the test on a touch screen, while the therapist can observe the results of the test in real time on a separated monitor, instead of using traditional methodologies based on physical elements.
