Digital Vehicle Protocol based on distributed ledger technology in Production

This paper describes the utilization of distributed ledger technology (DLT) as means of a digital backbone – the so-called digital vehicle protocol – across the commercial vehicle industry. Enabling a digital vehicle protocol along the value chain resolves common data management problems, which are still the main inhibitor for advanced analytics methods and serves as a basis for new business models. This contribution demonstrates a per product-data centered approach in which low structured data can be written to and read from any point along the value chain on a product unit-based scope by using DLT. By embedding data post-processing pipelines per product-unit, data easily can be retrofitted to the task at hand. Therefore, it decouples data post-processing from data generation as well as overcoming current data silos within organizations. DLT hereby allows tying processing routines to data leading to a temper-proof digital vehicle protocol. Besides obtaining a stronger product-individual focus, our approach enables an easier integration of stakeholders into the entire business process landscape such as suppliers as well as sellers and leads to future business models such as billing depending on quality defects found during production. Our conceptual framework resolves current problems, i.e. data access, data quality and data processing costs. We align conceptual applicability with regards to a Truck Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) within the scope of failure management in production in order to specify implementation details, which reveal new business process models that further can transform commercial vehicle manufacturers from producers to service providers.

The vision of the Paris Climate Convention is global greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. Manufacturing industry accounts for approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas. The achievement of emission targets requires joint implementation and the participation of the employee. An incentive concept based on a distributed ledger technology allows the automatically reward of climate protection measures based on tamper-proof stored Key Performance Indicators. The technology also enables the automated payment of a CO 2 -tax proportional to energy consumption. A technology recommendation for the incentive concept based on an analysis of the technological requirements for a distributed ledger completes the paper.

Information-intensive transformation is vital to realize the Industry 4.0 paradigm, where processes, systems, and people are in a connected environment. Current factories must combine different sources of knowledge with different technological layers. Taking into account data interconnection and information transparency, it is necessary to enhance the existing frameworks. This paper proposes an extension to an existing framework, which enables access to knowledge about the different data sources available, including data from operators. To develop the interoperability principle, a specific proposal to provide a (public and encrypted) data management solution to ensure information transparency is presented, which enables semantic data treatment and provides an appropriate context to allow data fusion. This proposal is designed also considering the Privacy by Design option. As a proof of application case, an implementation was carried out regarding the logistics of the delivery of industrial components in the construction sector, where different stakeholders may benefit from shared knowledge under the proposed architecture.

Exploring the Next Wave of Blockchain and distributed ledger technology: The Overlooked Potential of Scenario Analysis

Blockchain is predicted to disrupt industries, economies, and societies. The properties of distributed ledgers allow the creation of immutable data structures that facilitate shared access in real time and enable a plethora of innovative applications. However, blockchain is not a uniform technology but rather a bundle of evolving components whose implications are notoriously hard to predict. At present, it is not clear how current trends will evolve, with technical evolution, legislation, and public policy being three contingency factors that make ongoing disruptive transformations particularly hard to predict. In light of blockchain's potential disruptive impact, it is surprising that scenario analysis has hitherto been largely ignored in academic research. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the technique, clarify several misconceptions, and provide examples illustrating how this method can help to overcome the limitations of existing technology impact research. We conclude that if applied correctly, scenario analysis represents the ideal tool to rigorously explore uncertain future developments and to create a comprehensive foundation for future research.

Recently, cross-border transfers using blockchain-based virtual assets (cryptocurrency) have been increasing. However, due to the anonymity of blockchain, there is a problem related to money laundering because the virtual asset service providers cannot identify the originators and the beneficiaries. In addition, the international anti-money-laundering organization (the Financial Action Task Force, FATF) has placed anti-money-laundering obligations on virtual asset service providers through anti-money-laundering guidance for virtual assets issued in June 2019. This paper proposes a customer identification service model based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) that enables virtual asset service providers to verify the identity of the originators and beneficiaries.

We study and develop an automated platform for shareholder rights management using distributed ledger technology (DLT), in collaboration with an equity crowdfunding company. DLT has high impact potential for the multi-agent systems domain, as it allows participants to agree on the values of shared variables and keep a history of how the values change over time. DLT also enables participants to know that the shared values are common knowledge. In our application, the shared variables that the agents agree on are the shareholder rights. Knowing that there is common agreement on these rights allows us to develop related applications, such as a shareholder voting system. In this paper, we discuss the shareholder rights management platform and briefly mention a related shareholder voting system, both currently under development.

Performance analysis of a blockchain process modeling: Application of distributed ledger technology in trading, clearing and settlement processes

This study aims to assess the extent to which blockchain technology (BCT) may constitute an alternative to the conventional stock trading system and emphasize the changing roles of the key parties. It is expected that BCT would enhance the performance of the process across the three stages (i.e. trading, clearing and settlement within the stock exchange environment). A thorough literature review is conducted to understand the BCT performance modeling techniques and approaches (empirical and analytical) and to examine the theoretical potentials and capabilities of BCT in the financial markets. The case study and simulation methods are used to evaluate the impact of BCT implementation in optimizing the process of trading, clearing and settlement in Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) stock-trading activities. This paper presents a simulation analysis comparing a blockchain system with a traditional trading system in the context of stock market. The simulation procedures involve modeling processes over different durations and transaction volumes, using metrics such as process time and cycle time to evaluate performance. The performance index combines these metrics with weights to ensure accurate and consistent measurements. Simulation results reveal that the blockchain system significantly outperforms the current trading system, especially at higher transaction volumes, highlighting its scalability and efficiency. A threshold of 30,000 transactions is identified as the point where blockchain's benefits become apparent. The analysis shows that blockchain significantly elevate the process efficiency. It reduces both cycle time and process time across varying transaction volumes, maintaining consistency and reliability. Additionally, a simple simulation using the Hyperledger Fabric platform demonstrates the practical implementation of a permissioned blockchain for clearing transactions, emphasizing the system's capability to manage high transaction volumes efficiently and

Industries are now deploying smart initiatives and innovative business models towards digital transformation. One of such initiatives is the adoption of distributed ledger technology (DLT) which promises to support smart industrial revolution. DLT facilitates non trusted entities to communicate and achieve a consensus in a fully distributed method through an immutable and cryptographically secure ledger. DLT ensures traceability and secure exchange of information while ensuring confidentiality and portability of data. However, only fewer studies have explored the extent to which DLT can support digitalization to achieve smart industrial process. Besides, the governance role of DLT in industrial sectors is still considered a nascent domain of research and DLT governance design and archetypes for smart industries are still in the early stage. Also, there are fewer studies in the literature that presents consensus mechanisms for integrating DLT for digitalization of smart industries. Grounded on the secondary data this study examines the practical benefits and challenges faced in achieving a smart industrial operation. Findings from this study identifies governance and security issues that influences DLT deployment in industrial sectors. More importantly, several factors that impacts the deployment of DLT for smart industries are presented. Implications from this study will be useful for industrial regulators, practitioners and researchers interested in gaining innovative insights about how smart industries can leverage DLT to create value for competitive advantage. © 2023, The Author(s).

Blockchain and lean construction: an exploration of bidirectional synergies and interactions

Blockchain is a form of digital distributed ledger, referring to databases decentralized across numerous users, facilitating peer-to-peer transactions by eliminating or reducing the need for intermediaries to conduct, validate, or authenticate them. It is characterized by transparency, data immutability and traceability, and consensus processes validating cryptographic signatures. The architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry is increasingly interested in blockchain. Lean construction (LC), a value-focused production management concept, has long been challenging conventional project management practices in AECO. Lack of conversation, however, surrounds whether and how blockchain can (or should) impact LC developments - and vice versa. And if that impact exists - is it significant enough to create value for the related stakeholders? This article offers a conceptual synergistic framework of interactions between blockchain and LC, which can facilitate an understanding on whether there is value in their combined use. A systematic literature review and analysis serve as the foundation of this research. The findings show that LC can be facilitated by blockchain through trust building for relational procurement, data recording for some key activities (e.g. offsite construction, Last Planner System), and streamlining some non-value activities (e.g. payments). In return, blockchain can gain relevance for project management practices when it is defined and implemented in a LC framework. Also, LC can help improve blockchain-related workflows and decision making.
