The solution of the problem of stationary transverse vibration of an orthotropic plate of any shape with the set of holes of any configuration subjected to the action of harmonic (in time) loading distributed over the surface is constructed within the framework of the theory taking into account transverse shears and the inertial component by the indirect boundary-element method. Mixed harmonic (in time) boundary conditions are imposed on the contours of the holes and on the outer boundary of the plate. To find Green functions, we use the consecutive representation of the Dirac delta-function and the generalized method of Fourier series. Test numerical results are presented for different partial cases of the problem.

Robustness analysis of dynamic progressive collapse of precast concrete beam-column assemblies using dry connections under uniformly distributed load

A series of dynamic progressive collapse tests using the uniformly distributed load (UDL) was conducted, to analyze the robustness of three precast concrete (PC) beam-column assemblies using dry connections of top-andseat angles (TSA-D), strengthened top-and-seat angles (STSA-D), and high-ductility reinforcement (DSTSA-D), under a middle column removal scenario. Finite element (FE) models were also developed to accurately simulate the collapse process. Based on the tests and FE models, comparative studies were conducted on dynamic and static collapse responses of the PC assemblies with identical configuration, loading regime, and boundary conditions. The results showed that: the horizontal reaction force developments were similar under dynamic and static collapse scenarios;under dynamic collapse scenarios, the initial stiffness of the PC assemblies increased due to the strain rate effect, while the peak vertical reaction forces under the compressive arch action (CAA) were smaller than those under static collapse scenarios, attributed to dynamic damage;under both dynamic and static collapse scenarios under UDL, the beam deformed in a downward convex curved shape, with local material deformation becoming more concentrated under dynamic collapse scenarios. An energy-based method for calculating dynamic collapse resistance was evaluated and revised: 1) the traditional method, which converts static responses from static analysis into dynamic responses was found to underestimate the resistance under small deformations due to neglecting the strain rate effect, and to overestimate ultimate resistance by ignoring dynamic damage;2) by using dynamic vertical reaction forces instead, a more accurate prediction of the dynamic collapse resistance was achieved with a single dynamic collapse analysis. The article presents an analytical theory for multilayered composite beams subjected to transverse uniformly distributed loads. The formulation is based on a layerwise model characterized by third-order approximation of the axial displacements and fourth-order approximation of the transverse displacements. The layerwise kinematical model is rewritten in terms of generalized variables. The beam equilibrium equations, expressed in terms of stress resultant, allow writing the boundary value governing problem. The layerwise fields are obtained by postprocessing steps. The main advantage is to ensure the accuracy level associated to the layerwise formulations preserving the computational efficiency of the equivalent-single-layer theories.

Identifying Magnitudes and Locations of Multiple loads and the Resultant of a distributed load on a Slender Beam Using Strain Gage Based Methods

Unique strain gage based methods are developed to identify magnitudes and locations of multiple loads and the resultant of a distributed load on a slender beam. Four uniaxial strain gages mounted to the bottom surface of the beam create a force transducer capable of identifying the magnitude and location of a load inside the weight area, where the load can be a concentrated or distributed load. For the case of multiple loads separated by two or more strain gage locations, uniaxial strain gages forming multiple force transducers can still identify the magnitudes and locations of all the loads. However, this creates an ill-posed problem for loads separated by only one strain gage location. A new method has been developed using two shear gages mounted on the neutral axis of the beam, one on each side of a load, to identify the magnitude of the load in this case. A combination of two uniaxial strain gages and two shear gages, with one uniaxial strain gage and one shear gage at the same location on each side of a load, can be used to identify the location of the load. The strain gage based methods are experimentally validated on a prismatic beam with rest boundary conditions.

Cables of a prescribed length under concentrated or distributed loads

A general analysis of inextensible perfectly flexible cables of negligible weight and a prescribed length, loaded by an arbitrary number of concentrated loads, or by a uniformly distributed load per unit horizontal length, is presented. A catenary cable under its own weight, with or without a concentrated force, is also considered. The sags under loads and tensions in all segments of the cable are determined. The results are derived in closed-form, apart from a numerical solution of a single nonlinear algebraic equation for a suitably introduced parameter in the last step of the analysis. The study complements the treatment of cables under concentrated forces available in undergraduate textbooks, which omit the consideration of cables whose length is prescribed in advance. The general analysis may be found appealing for a senior or graduate structural mechanics course, while its specialization to cables with two or three loads only is well suited for an introductory mechanics course. Expressions for a catenary cable subjected to a concentrated load at its midpoint are also derived, with only one nonlinear transcendental equation for the introduced load parameter needing to be solved numerically. Three student projects are suggested which address the existence and uniqueness of the cable configuration under a concentrated force with a specified sag and length of the cable, the lifting of two symmetrically hung loads by an upward force, and the determination of the deformed shape and tension in a catenary cable subjected to a concentrated force at an arbitrary point of the cable.

Transverse Vibration of an Orthotropic Plate with Perfectly Rigid Inclusions in the Presence of a load distributed Over the Surface

On the basis of the indirect method of boundary elements, we construct the solution of the problem of steady-state transverse vibration of an orthotropic plate of complex shape containing a collection of perfectly rigid inclusions of different configurations under the action of a harmonic (in time) arbitrary distributed load acting on the surface of the plate. We use a sequential representation of the Green functions and a refined theory of plates that takes into account transverse shear strains and inertial components. We consider various types of connections of inclusions with the plate and mixed harmonic (in time) boundary conditions on the outer boundary of the plate. It is assumed that inclusions mainly participate in translational motion in the direction normal to the middle surface of the plate. The test numerical results are presented for special cases of the problem.

We solve the problem of steady-state transverse vibration of an orthotropic plate of any shape containing a set of reinforced holes of arbitrary configuration under the action of a harmonic (in time) load arbitrarily distributed over the surface. We use the equations of the refined theory of plates that take into account the transverse shear strains and all inertial components. The solution is constructed by using the indirect boundary-element method. Modern System on Chip (SoC) seeks multiple LDOs to provide regulated supply to its different peripherals. However, distributed LDOs across the chip increase power consumption and at the same time, each driver requires a separate transient detection block to reduce the undershoot/overshoot, increasing the area. The work presents a viable solution to tackle such issues by proposing a Multi-loop LDO that uses distributed Flipped Voltage Follower (FVF) drivers. The topology presents one central unit common to every distributed FVF driver across the chip that acts as a global loop, whereas each FVF loop serves as a fast local loop. The proposed power grid structure reduces the overshoot/undershoot voltage without adding additional transient detection schemes. The work depicts design and simulation results to validate the proposed idea with four distributed drivers in 180 nm TSMC node. Simulation results show that the proposed technique helps reduce the droop voltage by more than 40% compared to conventional structures without increasing the design complexity. © 2023 IEEE.

Influence of shear reinforcement on the shear cracking and shear resistance of simply supported beams subjected to concentrated loads and cantilevers subjected to uniformly distributed loads

This paper presents an experimental program on reinforced, rectangular concrete beams with varying amounts of shear reinforcement. A total of ten simply supported beams subjected to two concentrated loads and twenty-four cantilevers subjected to uniformly distributed loads were tested. The specimens had the same cross-sectional properties and stirrup spacing. The single variable was the bar diameter of the stirrups;this was done so that five shear reinforcement ratios ranging between zero and two times the required minimum shear reinforcement ratio, as stipulated by Eurocode 2, could be obtained. The test results indicate significant differences in the shear crack pattern and shear resistance of the simply supported beams and cantilevers - each with the same longitudinal and shear reinforcement. For each amount of shear reinforcement investigated, the shear resistance of the cantilevers subjected to a uniformly distributed load was higher than that of the simply supported beams. Additionally, the amounts of shear reinforcement, specifically amounts below the threshold for the minimum shear reinforcement, could considerably increase the shear resistance of the cantilevers, while having almost no influence on the shear resistance of the simply supported beams. However, the difference in the shear resistance between these two structural types tends to decrease with an increase in the amount of shear reinforcement. A comparison of the shear resistance predicted by formulas included in some of the codes of practice and by a model recently developed by the authors is also provided.
