In this paper, load balancing is defined as the process of allocating workload to reduce the mean job waiting time. In a distributed multi-server system, load balancing is a challenging task if there is no central coordination or time-synchronization among users. In this paper, we present a queuing model for a distributed asynchronous multi-server system. To realize load balancing, we propose a distributed algorithm based on protocol sequences, which are deterministic binary sequences and preassigned to users. The goal of this paper is to find optimal sequence sets which minimize the maximum mean job waiting time for all possible relative time shifts among users. We extend previous results reported in the literature to show that Shift-Invariant (SI) protocol sequences can ensure that the mean job waiting time is invariant for different time shifts. Moreover, our numerical studies indicate that the load balancing scheme based on SI sequences outperform the random sequence scheme, the completely random scheme and the probabilistic scheme.

Future Long Term Evolution (LTE) Radio Access Network (RAN) 1 will benefit from a significant degree of self-organization. Autonomic load balancing (ALB) is considered as an important self-organizing function in LTE RAN. In this work, distributed ALB is achieved by Autonomic Network Management (ANM). load conditions of eNBs (E-UTRAN NodeB) can be detected. Sizes and shapes of cellular coverage can be adjusted automatically according to load conditions, so as to balance load. Simulation results demonstrated that by the use of ALB, the system capacity can be improved significantly.

This paper presents a general DLB procedure which contains three sub procedures: "reporting", "balancing", and "adapting". But X2AP can only support the "reporting" sub-procedure, ignoring that the other two sub-procedures also need signaling interaction. Giving consideration to the scalability of interfaces, the authors design an extended X2AP in order to better support the various DLB solutions, including the function classification, the definition of messages and the relevant date types. Finally, based on the extended X2AP, the signaling interaction of distributed load negotiation mechanism is introduced into LTE and analyzed.

With the rapid growth of mobile communications, deployment and maintenance of cellular mobile networks are becoming more and more complex, time consuming, and expensive. In order to meet the requirements of network operators and service providers, the telecommunication industry and international standardization bodies have recently paid intensive attention to the research and development of self-organizing networks. As one of the most important self-optimization issues for Long Term Evolution (LTE), load balancing is highly concerned because of large demand of resources, time-varying traffic and market side reasons. In this paper, we introduce a novel distributed mobility load balancing algorithm through adjusting Radio Resource Management (RRM) parameters dynamically based on the source cell load and its neighboring cell condition. Work stealing is a popular solution to perform dynamic load balancing of irregular computations, both for shared memory and distributed memory systems. While shared memory performance of work stealing is well understood, distributing this algorithm to several thousands of nodes can introduce new performance issues. In particular, most studies of work stealing assume that all participating processes are equidistant from each other, in terms of communication latency. This paper presents a new performance evaluation of the popular UTS benchmark, in its work stealing implementation, on the scale of ten thousands of compute nodes. Taking advantage of the physical scale of the K Computer, we investigate in details the performance impact of communication latencies on work stealing. In particular, we introduce a new performance metric to assess the time needed by the work stealing scheduler to distribute work among all processes. Using this metric, we identify a previously overlooked issue: the victim selection function used by the work stealing application can severely impact its performance at large scale. To solve this issue, we introduce a new strategy taking into account the physical distance between nodes and achieve significant performance improvements.

Jobs scheduling and load balancing functionalities are crucial for best Grid performance and utilization. In this paper, we present a dynamic and adaptive polyhedron topology-aware Grid load balancing method which we called TunGrid. Its main objective is the extreme decentralization of the scheduling and the load balancing processes at the lowest processing and networking cost. It ensures load balancing through an adaptive local neighborhood propagation strategy of overload. TunGrid was experimented using the GridSim simulator and compared to other methods. Experimental results are presented and discussed.

A dynamic and adaptive load balancing strategy for parallel file system with large-scale I/O servers

Many solutions have been proposed to tackle the load imbalance issue of parallel file systems. However, all these solutions either adopt centralized algorithms, or lack considerations for both the network transmission and the tradeoff between benefits and side-effects of each dynamic file migration. Therefore, existing solutions will be prohibitively inefficient in large-scale parallel file systems. To address this problem, this paper presents SALB, a dynamic and adaptive load balancing algorithm which is totally based on a distributed architecture. To be also aware of the network transmission, SALB on the one hand adopts an adaptively adjusted load collection threshold in order to reduce the message exchanges for load collection, and on the other hand it employs an on-line load prediction model with a view to reducing the decision delay caused by the network transmission latency. Moreover, SALB employs an optimization model for selecting the migration candidates so as to balance the benefits and the side-effects of each dynamic file migration. Extensive experiments are conducted to prove the effectiveness of SALB. The results show that SALB achieves an optimal performance not only on the mean response time but also on the resource utilization among the schemes for comparison. The simulation results also indicate that SALB is able to deliver high scalability. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A new algorithm is described for distributed joint diagonalization of real symmetric or complex Hermitian matrices. The approach, which is based on the Jacobi diagonalization, utilizes distribution of the computational power and memory space, minimizes the communication costs, and runs on clusters of personal computers. It further combines two-step load balancing algorithm with a standard Kalman filter to enable quick but low-cost adaptation to resource varying conditions. Theoretical analysis of its performance shows that the communication costs (when normalized by computational costs) decline linearly with the number and size of the diagonalized matrices. This is also confirmed by experimental results: the measured speedup ratio yields 42.2 when jointly diagonalizing 800 matrices of size 400x400 on a cluster of 50 personal computers.

We customize a dynamic load balancer to the molecular dynamics problem. The balancer is distributed, it requires no long-distance inter-process communications but only those among adjacent processors. It works accurately achieving significant time improvements when the system maintains moderate imbalance levels. The overhead is a problem only when the system does not achieve a minimum threshold imbalance.
