distributed temperature/strain measurement utilizing Brillouin optical fiber sensors in the Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted more attention to achieve state monitoring of large-scale structures. However, the huge amount of measurement data increases the hardware burden and limits the measurement speed. To address this problem, distributed measurement based on sparse spectra of Brillouin optical fiber sensors in IoT is proposed in this article. Nonlocally centralized sparse representation (NCSR) and fast iterative shrinkage thresholding (FIST) algorithms are adopted to sparsely represent and reconstruct the measured Brillouin scattering spectra (BSS), respectively. Compared with other sparse representation and reconstruction algorithms, the performance of NCSR and FIST for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement and successful recovery is the best. Only 25% of samples are needed to reconstruct BSS for further extraction of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) and temperature. The consistency of BFSs obtained from original and reconstructed BSS both in simulation and experimental results indicates that the extracted BFSs and temperatures are reliable and accurate by applying sparse BSS obtained by NCSR and FIST. Different frequency scanning intervals and heating temperatures in the experiment are also considered for analysis and discussion. The proposed method has been demonstrated to be effective in decreasing the quantity of data for acquisition, storage, and further analysis, which is conducive to reducing the system cost and improving the SNR to achieve distributed measurement in IoT.

The new Polarization-OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry) technique theoretically and numerically described in this paper is based on the fact that the polarization state evolution of the backscattered signal gives information about the distribution of the fibre birefringence along its length. The knowledge of the full polarization properties of a single-mode optical fibre can be very useful in optical fibre sensing. The distributed measurement of the polarization properties can indeed allow to map external fields like strain and temperature and therefore makes possible the realization of fully-distributed optical fibre sensors (FDOFS). There are also implications of this new method hr the measurement of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical-fibre telecommunications systems. Simulations have been done and gave promising results.

Optical time-domain measurement and characterization of intermodal beat length in an elliptic-core two-mode fiber (e-core TMF) is demonstrated using Brillouin dynamic grating. A mode-selective coupler is used for selective launch and retrieval of different modes, and the operations of BDG for four different pairs of pump-probe (LP01x-LP11x, LP01x-LP11y, LP01y-LP11x, LP01y-LP11y) are observed, representing a fine structure of modal birefringence in the e-core TMF. distributed measurement of the BDG spectrum is performed for each pair of pump-probe with 1.5 m spatial resolution mapping the difference of the effective refractive indexes of spatial and polarization modes along a 75 m TMF.

This paper presents a new approach of simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain using tapered fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) based on optical frequency-domain reflectomery (OFDR). This combination allows us to detect the peak wavelength and spectral width of the TFBG by distributed measuring the reflection peak at each location of the TFBG with high spatial resolution. The spectral width of the grating depends uniquely on the applied strain and is temperature independent. According to this characterization, the strain temperature cross-sensitivity issues can be solved. A measurement error of +/- 2 degrees C and +/- 10 mu epsilon was achieved in the experimental verification.

With the development of ultra-high voltage direct current (LIVDC) transmission technology and the construction of transmission lines, the surrounding electromagnetic environment has attracted the attention of researchers. In the process of designing and constructing UHVDC lines, it is necessary to control the ion current density in a reasonable range, so as to avoid harmful impacts on human health, which means it is very important to measure the ion current density accurately. At present, the voltmeter method is widely used in measuring the ion current density. The disadvantage of this method is that the ion flow data is transmitted through the cable. This will result in long preparation time and low efficiency, which is not suitable for field measurement. In this paper, the principle of distributed measurement system of ion current density and ZigBee wireless transmission technology are studied, and a set of ion current density distribution measurement system under UHVDC transmission lines is developed. It mainly includes the design of Wilson plate, the current measurement device and the development of upper computer software based on wireless sensor network. The result shows that the maximum relative error of the system is less than 3%. It also possesses high accuracy and efficiency, which is practical in field measuretnent.

Workload measurement method into a distributed measurement Laboratory

The distributed measurement Laboratory (DML) is an heterogeneous system and the workload evaluation is an important aspect to support the performance management strategies in case the specific requirements must to be respected. This paper describes the method to evaluate the workload of the co-operating hardware equipments of the DML, in particular: the connecting networks, and the PCs. In this manner useful indexes are achievable to monitor the functioning conditions of the whole DML. The proposed method is based on three different tools known and tested in the literature. The first one concerns with the synchronization among the clocks of the different co-operating PCs. The second one concerns the One-Way Delay parameter measurements of the path from the source to the destination. The third one concerns the workload measurement of the CPU of each PC. The results of several experimental tests showing the performance and the accuracy of the method are shown. Based on the analysis of these tests, some practical criteria can be inferred to point out performance management strategies. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a simultaneous strain and temperature measurement method using a polarization maintaining and absorption reducing (PANDA) fiber is applied to a distributed sensing system based on optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) whose length is 100 mm is inscribed into a PANDA fiber to form a long-length PANDA-FBG. We demonstrated simultaneous measurements of strain and temperature distributions experimentally. In experiments the long-length PANDA-FBG was bonded on a steel plate and various strains and temperatures were applied at the same time to the plate. Consequently strain and temperature were successfully discriminated. However, larger errors were observed for distributed measurement results.

Design and implementation of distributed measurement systems using fieldbus-based intelligent sensors

This paper presents a new topology of distributed measurement systems, which apply fieldbus-based intelligent sensors. Based on the framework, a novel intelligent measurement system, which provides output of measured data and data uncertainty simultaneously, is invented. The distributed measurement system is developed to connect intelligent sensors, intelligent actuators, and other intelligent control units together, where their intelligent functions are given by the availability of internal computing power and digital communications. With the help of fieldbus, intelligent sensors applying novel advanced methods of measurement technology are described. As an example to illustrate the proposed distributed system and advantages offered by fieldbus-based intelligent sensors, an implementation of intelligent frequency-output sensors attributed to distributed systems is presented. The intelligent eddy-current sensor that applies computing algorithms for separating sensor data errors and predicting sensor status is introduced. The contribution of blind source separation is highlighted. In the end, the test results and conclusions are provided.

In the determination of the bounds of unexcluded systematic error in a measurement result, the error components (in particular, the instrument components) are treated as equiprobably distributed random variables. The distribution function of a sum of equiprobably distributed errors for arbitrary bounds of components is given. Simple expressions are derived and graphs presented that can be used to compute the total error bounds.
