A heuristic distributed and no-wait method for solving multiagent task allocation problems with coupled temporal constraints

Temporal constraints, primarily arising from engagement rules and requiring tasks to be performed in a specific order, are critical in task allocation problems (TAPs). However, existing allocation methods often fall short of handling temporal constraints. This paper proposes a heuristic distributed and no-wait algorithm, called the Temporal-Constraints Performance Impact (TC-PI) algorithm, for solving multi-agent TAPs with temporal constraints. By requiring each agent either travels to or immediately executes its assigned task, the TC-PI eliminates unnecessary waiting time and effectively reduces the average task completion time. The proposed algorithm consists of three phases. Firstly, each agent sequentially adds tasks to its task list while ensuring temporal constraints are satisfied. Secondly, conflicts where multiple agents select the same task are resolved through local communication. Finally, any remaining conflicts caused by temporal constraints are further addressed. To maintain task order and minimize completion time, task significance is redefined by incorporating temporal relationships among tasks. A penalty mechanism prevents infinite task reallocation cycles, enhancing system robustness and avoiding deadlocks. Simulation results demonstrate that TC-PI effectively resolves temporal conflicts, achieves no-wait task allocations, and flexibly handles dynamic task arrivals.

A Fully distributed method to Detect and Reduce Cut Vertices in Large-Scale Overlay Networks

A cut vertex is defined as a network node whose removal increases the number of network components. Failure of a cut vertex disconnects a network component and downgrades the network performance. Overlay networks are resilient to the failure of random nodes, but cut vertices that have been observed in real-world overlay traces make the network very vulnerable to well-constructed and targeted attacks. Traditional methods of detecting cut vertices are centralized and are very difficult, if not impossible, to be applied to large-scale and highly dynamic overlay networks. We aim to provide a practical solution by proposing a distributed mechanism that detects the cut vertices and neutralizes them to noncut vertices before they fail. The proposed mechanism not only minimizes the possibility of network decomposition on the cut vertex failure but also offloads the traffic that is handled by the cut vertices. We prove that our proposed method can correctly identify the cut vertices. We evaluate the performance of our design through trace-driven simulations. The results show that our method can successfully locate all cut vertices in the network and greatly offload the traffic processed by cut vertices.

A Fixed-Point Based distributed method for Energy Flow Calculation in Multi-Energy Systems

Energy flow calculation (EFC) plays an important role in steady-state analysis of multi-energy systems (MESs). However, the independent management of sub-energy systems (subsystems) poses a considerable challenge to solve the high-order nonlinear energy flow model due to the limited information exchange between these subsystems. In this article, a fixed-point based distributed method is proposed for EFC in an electricity-gas-heating system. Firstly, the mathematical modeling of each subsystem with coupling units is introduced. Then, two information exchange structures among subsystems are presented as sequential and parallel structures. Based on the fixed-point theorem, novel distributed sequential and parallel methods for EFC are proposed to calculate energy flow distribution in MESs. In our proposed method, the EFC in subsystems is implemented by the individual system operators, with limited information exchange between subsystems. Therefore, the information privacy of subsystems can be preserved in this solution process. Moreover, the convergence of the proposed method is guaranteed, and the sufficient conditions for the convergence are presented. Lastly, simulations on a MES demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the quantified superiority over the existing methods in computation time, accuracy and reliability.

Emerging technologies such as network function virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) provide a promising way to implement service function chain (SFC), a chain-ordered set of network functions, to support heterogeneous network services through a shared substrate network. A major challenge in this respect is the SFC embedding with respect to constraints of physical resources. Furthermore, for practical purposes, SFC embedding across multiple domains becomes essential. This challenge is referred to as the cross-domain SFC embedding problem, which is intractable due to various reasons, such as the confidentiality of intra-domain information and the domain's local autonomy. In this paper, we propose GDM, a general distributed method for cross-domain SFC embedding. Besides preserving the privacy and autonomy of domains, GDM guarantees fair competition among domains while balancing loads among domains. It first partitions SFC by utilizing an algorithm that can be instantiated to support different embedding goals. Then it allows domains to embed their assigned segments following their policies. Finally, to improve the capability of the whole substrate network to accommodate more SFCs, it implements domain-level load balancing by migrating the deployed VNFs while avoiding excessive influence on the SFC embedding solution. Evaluation results demonstrate that our method performs better in improving acceptance ratio and optimizing domains' embedding goals compared to the existing methods, and it has better scalability.

DNA digital data storage refers to the technique of storing digital information on synthetic DNA. This paper introduces the method of converting digital information into genetic code based on ternary data conversion method. The "end-to-end". gene storage model was proposed without the use of address bits, which enabling unlimited information storage. With the distributed model, the information is evenly distributed among a plurality of storage tubes. Each storage tube eliminates a certain amount of data according to the congruence misplacement, and each of the chains adds 8-bit error correction bits. As a result, even if the order is disrupted, the regular order of genes can be still recovered by comparing the points. The error rate can be controlled at the average of 10(-5) and the highest is 5.9968 x 10(-5), which is robust and secure.

This work presents a distributed method for control centers to monitor the operating condition of a power network. Specifically we consider (static) state estimation problems, in which the state vector consists of the voltage magnitude and angle at all network buses. We consider the state to be linearly related to network measurements, which include power flows, current injections, and voltages phasors at some buses. We admit the presence of several cooperating control centers, and we design two distributed methods for them to compute the minimum variance estimate of the state given the network measurements. The two distributed methods rely on different modes of cooperation among control centers: in the first method an incremental mode of cooperation is assumed, whereas, in the second method, a diffusive interaction is implemented. These estimation methods, which are proved to converge in finite time, are further exploited to develop a distributed algorithm to detect corrupted data among network measurements.

In this paper, we present a distributed method for birdcage Radio Frequency (RF) coils optimization model. This method can optimize the birdcage coil when doing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to improve their efficiency and performance. We first assume that the birdcage RF coils are the multi-agent systems, which are usually nonlinear system in practice. Each rung in the birdcage RF coils cage is an agent. Then we employ the distributed optimization algorithm framework, integrating the gradient algorithm to design and optimize the structure of high pass birdcage coils. The algorithm always converges globally. Therefore, it can achieve the goals of increased transmission efficiency and reduced power consumption. The simulation test results are provided to validate that the MRI birdcage RF coils imaging can always get the globally optimal solution under multi-agent system via agents iterative simulations and practical parameter. The featuring simple parameter iteration of birdcage coil has the significance to the design and manufacturing of birdcage RF coils in ultra-high magnetic field imaging.

This paper focus on a distributed method for three-dimensional flow field estimation using multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). In this method, direct measurements of local flow velocity are not required and cooperation between AUVs is considered. In this paper, the flow field estimation is formulated as an inverse problem that solves a system of nonlinear equations and we propose a tree -based distributed algorithm to solve the above equations, in which we only require the communication network among AUVs to be connected. The tree structure allows for passage of solution estimates within the network, and through dispersion and pooling stages of the algorithm, the flow field parameters are finally estimated. The convergence of the distributed algorithm is strictly proved. Finally, simulations in simulated and real flow datasets are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed method.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A consensus-based distributed method of clock synchronization for sensor networks

In this study, an innovative distributed method for achieving external clock synchronization is presented. Based on discrete-time clock models, it can realize synchronization of clocks while enabling their time to change at the same pace simultaneously. Stronger robustness against noisy measurements and clock rate drifts is gained by combining both controller and estimator design methods into the protocol. Additionally, a specifically designed communication scheme is proposed to make our protocols independent on global physical time. To render our protocols more practical, the control variable for clock synchronization is ensured bounded and a stopping criterion for implementation of the protocols is established. Finally, performance of the method is illustrated by certain numerical simulations.
