Subspace-Aided distributed monitoring and Control Performance Optimization Approach for Interconnected Industrial Systems

This article proposes a subspace-aided distributed monitoring and control performance optimization integrated framework and the corresponding distributed monitoring and optimization approaches equivalent to centralized designs. It effectively realizes the online global control performance optimization and solves the predesigned controller parameter adjustment limitation. The main contributions of this article are as follows. First, the proposed distributed monitoring and optimization modules can cooperate to establish a subspace-aided distributed integrated framework. The framework effectively addresses the issue of separate design in monitoring and optimization, achieving modularization that facilitates the expansion and maintenance of interconnected systems. Second, the proposed subspace-aided control performance optimization approach breaks the limitations of existing methods that require predesigned controller parameter adjustments, which can achieve distributed control performance optimization while ensuring closed-loop stability of interconnected systems. Third, the proposed optimization approach can automatically adjust the iterative step size, avoiding the disadvantage of manually setting the step size in the traditional optimization algorithm. It shortens the optimization time and reduces the design difficulty. The new methodologies have been evaluated against the current techniques and validated using an interconnected dc motor system, which holds significant engineering importance.

The intelligent highway distributed monitoring system employing wFBG sensing technology is promising in the transport engineering. This research proposes a system architecture consisting of weak fiber Bragg grating (wFBG), data link, edge computing region and client interface. The structure and demodulation of the strained optical fiber cable and vibrating optical fiber cable based on wFBG were developed and applied. Further, taking Chen-Bridge and the nearby roadway as the research object, the performance of two types of sensing optical cables was verified according to dynamic and static loading experiments as well as finite element analysis. Moreover, the implementation solutions for intelligent highway functions such as bridge safety status, roadway safety status, lane identification, traffic volume statistics with speed calculation are proposed. Finally, the improvement directions of wFBG applications are analyzed.

Data-Driven distributed Robust monitoring and Control Optimization for Interconnected Systems

This article proposes a projection-aided robust distributed monitoring and control optimization approach for interconnected systems with disturbances. The disturbances and state coupling between subsystems are a challenge in achieving accurate distributed process monitoring using data-driven techniques. To address the problems, a distributed adaptive residual generator uses the average consensus algorithm to perform data fusion on the subsystem residual generator to implement disturbance decoupling process monitoring. The key to implementing this process is to use input and output data disturbance in the perturbed orthogonal complementary space to drive the adaptive residual generator. Then, using the projection technique, the residual signal in the disturbance space drives the distributed learning of plug-and-play (PnP) controller parameters. The average consensus algorithm ensures that the subsystem PnP controller parameter gradient consistency converges to the centralized design. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach are verified and demonstrated through a simulation.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) often consist of tiny devices and offer a variety of potential means to monitor the environment. However, WSNs are vulnerable to several types of attack because of their use in critical applications, their deployment in open and unprotected environments and their limited system resources. Therefore, security design is an important aspect of WSNs. In this work, we focus on detecting misbehaving nodes in WSNs. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to present a complete and formal study on finding optimised monitor nodes and combining the organisation of the network with monitoring for misbehaviour detection in WSNs. The main idea of this work is to propose simple and efficient distributed monitoring algorithm capable of detecting misbehaviours based on a clustered architecture, where the cluster head is elected according to a new set of metrics. These new election metrics are based on a multiple-criteria decision approach in order to monitor the health status of cluster members and detect misbehaviour. Our proposed strategy ensures a good selection of the nodes responsible for monitoring, reduces energy consumption during the monitoring processeffectively reducing the amount of security information that flows through the networkand reduces latency. Aging of Tawny Port wine is a multifactorial process critical for attaining the desired quality. Real time monitoring of important intrinsic and extrinsic factors that are known to affect the time and quality of the aging process are important to optimize and to manage the natural variability between wines aged in different long used wood barrels. For this study, a distributed monitoring system was installed in sixteen oak barrels, placed in two adjacent wineries - one of them with controlled temperature in the Douro Demarcated Region, Portugal. The monitoring process was performed using a RS-485 industrial network, which interconnects sensors that continuously measure wine temperature, pH, redox potential and wine's dissolved oxygen, as well as other sensors that measure parameters related to the barrels' environmental context, such as room temperature and relative humidity. This work presents the design, development and implementation of a remote distributed system to monitor such parameters, aiming to determine the existence of behaviour models for Port Tawny wine during aging in long-used oak barrels, depending on their storage history and to understand the evolution of wine pH, dissolved oxygen and redox potential in real winery conditions as well as their dependence on the wine's storage temperature. This approach is based on easy-to-use embedded systems, with the aim of giving a relevant contribution to other projects in the area of precision enology.

The assessment of voltage stability margins is a promising direction for wide-area monitoring systems. Accurate monitoring architectures for long-term voltage instability are typically centralized and lack scalability, while completely decentralized approaches relying on local measurements tend toward inaccuracy. Here we present distributed linear algorithms for the online computation of voltage collapse sensitivity indices. The computations are collectively performed by processors embedded at each bus in the smart grid, using synchronized phasor measurements and communication of voltage phasors between neighboring buses. Our algorithms provably converge to the proper index values as would be calculated using centralized information, but do not require any central decision maker for coordination. Modifications of the algorithms to account for generator reactive power limits are discussed. We illustrate the effectiveness of our designs with a case study of the New England 39 bus system.

Large-scale plant-wide processes have become more common and monitoring of such processes is imperative. This work focuses on establishing a distributed monitoring scheme incorporating multivariate statistical analysis and Bayesian method for large-scale plant-wide processes. First, the necessity of distributed monitoring is demonstrated by theoretical analysis on the impact of process decomposition on multivariate statistical process monitoring performance. Second, a stochastic optimization algorithm based performance-driven process decomposition method is proposed which aims to achieve the best possible monitoring performance from process decomposition aspect. Based on the obtained sub-blocks, local monitors are established to characterize local process behaviors, and then a Bayesian fault diagnosis system is established to identify the underlying process status of the entire process. The proposed distributed monitoring scheme is applied on a numerical example and the Tennessee Eastman benchmark process. Comparison results to some state-of-the-art methods indicate the efficiency and feasibility. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sheet piles play a crucial role in cofferdams, significantly influencing safety during excavation. The integration of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) technology enables sheet piles to autonomously monitor stress and deformation throughout the construction process. The feasibility of this method was demonstrated in an engineering case study. Furthermore, a layout approach was proposed for glass-carbon fiber composite-based optical cables, demonstrating its suitability for the distributed monitoring of sheet piles within cofferdams. The wavelet theory and optical smooth spline algorithm were used for data analysis. The findings indicated that the OFDR technology successfully captured the strain, bending moment, and deflection distribution on sheet piles during various excavation stages. These findings support the promotion of OFDR-based monitoring of sheet piles as an innovative cofferdam monitoring technology.

Supervising a system in operation allows to detect a violation of system specification or temporal properties, and is the first step required by any reconfiguration mechanism. In this work, we focus on run-time verification of temporal system properties in distributed and real-time systems. Based on a description of a property that includes events and temporal constraints, expressed as an arc timed Petri net, we automatically derive a monitoring system responsible for checking this property. The proposed approach enables the distributed verification of system properties. Our contribution is twofold. On the theoretical side, we introduce a slight modification of the semantics of Petri nets to be able to execute it in partial executions and noisy observation environments. On the practical side, we show how to use this formal framework to provide a distributed and efficient monitoring system, and describe its current implementation.
