This article presents an analysis of the feasibility of executing wide-area monitoring and control functions in a distributed way in the power system, taking advantage of interconnected system's behavior that describes the power system. For this purpose, observability is analyzed when the state estimation is performed in a distributed way and only with local measurements. Also, power system is adjusted to a distributed cooperative control problem based on consensus algorithms. After the analysis presented, it can be concluded that the power system can be represented through a disaggregated model, based on models of interconnected subsystems, which proves the feasibility of executing monitoring or control tasks in a distributed way without information exchange with neighboring areas.

The market breakthrough of electric vehicles is mainly delayed by the still too high costs of the battery system. The novel distributed battery cell monitoring and management concept presented in this paper allows a significant reduction of the final battery pack costs. Further, due to economies of scale, it provides reduced development costs and much lower time-to-market. The proposed concept provides a contactless cost-efficient data transmission interface with capacitive coupling, thus making the development of a battery monitoring circuit for each battery module type needless. The costs are mainly reduced thanks to the high volume manufacturing approach of novel smart battery cells integrating all the sensors of the monitoring electronics together with passive cell balancing and cell heating function. This paper describes the possibilities offered by the proposed concept and shows implementation examples of such a contactless distributed battery cell monitoring.

Dishonesty detection in mobile and wireless networks is a task that typically relies on watchdog techniques. However, these medium overhearing-based techniques are prone to cause a high energy consumption. In an attempt to address this problem, several proposals adopted trust management as an alternative solution that is able to overcome the shortcomings of cryptography-based solutions when facing inside attacks. Unfortunately, these trust-based solutions remain mostly unable to reduce energy consumption. In this paper we propose a distributed time division-based monitoring strategy to achieve the required security levels while optimizing the energy consumption. Our proposal accounts for both trust and link duration among honest peers to fairly divide the monitoring period, and takes advantage of the periodically exchanged hello messages to make this solution fully distributed. Simulations results evidence the energy efficiency achieved by our proposal, especially for high density scenarios (>120 nodes) where the consumption becomes stable and does not increase with the number of nodes, while ensuring high detection ratios of malicious nodes (>85%).

We consider distributed elections, where there is a center and k sites. In such distributed elections, each voter has preferences over some set of candidates, and each voter is assigned to exactly one site such that each site is aware only of the voters assigned to it. The center is able to directly communicate with each of the sites. We are interested in designing communication-efficient protocols, allowing the center to maintain (i.e., declare) a candidate which, with arbitrary high probability, is guaranteed to be a winner, or at least close to being a winner. We consider various single-winner voting rules, such as variants of Approval voting and scoring rules, tournament-based voting rules, and several round-based voting rules For these voting rules, we show that, using communication which is logarithmic in the number of voters, it is possible for the center to maintain such approximate winners. We complement our protocols with lower bounds. Our results have implications in various scenarios, such as aggregating customer preferences in online shopping websites or supermarket chains and collecting votes from different polling stations of political elections.

With the growing complexity of industrial processes, the scale of production processes tends to be large. The significant amount of measurement data in large-scale processes poses challenges in data collection, management, and storage. In order to perform effective process monitoring in large-scale processes, the distributed process monitoring strategy is widely applied. Meanwhile, product quality is an important indicator for industrial production. Therefore, a novel quality-based distributed process monitoring scheme is proposed. Firstly, the Girvan-Newman (GN) algorithm in complex network divides process variables into multiple sub-blocks. Secondly, greedy algorithm-based high-dimensional mutual information (HDMI) is used to extract quality-related variables in each sub-block, through which the irrelevant and redundant variables are eliminated. Thirdly, the decomposed modified partial least squares (DMPLS) approach is used to detect whether a fault is quality-related or not in each sub-block. Finally, the Bayesian inference strategy is adopted to combine the detection results of all sub-blocks. The effectiveness of the distributed DMPLS approach is illustrated through a numerical simulation and the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process. The results show the superiority of our proposed monitoring scheme.

This paper presents a novel performance index for distributed monitoring of quasi-static voltage collapse in multi-area interconnected power systems. Based on the sensitivity of the smallest singular value of the power flow Jacobian matrix with respect to the regional load vector, the performance index applies overlapping decomposition in order to monitor the entire interconnected system with minimal area-level information exchange. Theoretical justification and practical implementation of distributed voltage stability monitoring are presented. By comparing the value of the performance index with a numerically robust threshold at each administrative control area, each area will be able to monitor quasi-static voltage instability at the entire interconnection level. Numerical simulations in the IEEE 300-bus system illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed performance index and the threshold.

Improved Algorithms for distributed Entropy monitoring

Modern data management systems often need to deal with massive, dynamic and inherently distributed data sources. We collect the data using a distributed network, and at the same time try to maintain a global view of the data at a central coordinator using a minimal amount of communication. Such applications have been captured by the distributed monitoring model which has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. In this paper we investigate the monitoring of the entropy functions, which are very useful in network monitoring applications such as detecting distributed denial-of-service attacks. Our results improve the previous best results by Arackaparambil et al. in ICLP 1: 95-106 (2009). Our technical contribution also includes implementing the celebrated AMS sampling method (by Alon et al. in J Comput Syst Sci 58(1): 137-147 1999) in the distributed monitoring model, which could be of independent interest.

A wireless distributed monitoring terminal was designed with embedded Linux used on the basis of ARM board, and an application program was developed for data collection, processing and transmission. Data were collected from the surrounding environment and transmitted to a server via WLAN in the form of Extensible Markup Language (XML) stream, so the terminal had good flexibility to be compatible with different sensors, network devices and information systems from multiple manufacturers.

Process monitoring technology can help make the right decisions in manufacturing, but the complexity and scale of modern process industry processes render process monitoring difficult. Existing data-driven process monitoring methods utilize abundant monitoring data that are accumulated in industrial processes, but nonlinearity, high coupling, noise effects, and other problems continuously appear in process industry monitoring data. This study proposes a process monitoring method based on variational autoencoder and long short-term memory techniques. The method reconstructs the monitoring data by learning their distribution and time series characteristics under the controlled state, and then it monitors the state of the manufacturing process in real time by calculating the statistics. Evaluation is conducted using the Tennessee Eastman process case verification and experimental comparison method. Then, the proposed method is compared with the centralized process via principal component analysis and kernel principal component analysis. The results show that the proposed method can more significantly improve the effect of fault detection in distributed system process monitoring compared with the traditional method, and it has a better process monitoring effect.
