The dramatic growth of computer networks creates both an opportunity and a daunting distributed computing problem for users seeking to build applications that can configure themselves and adapt as disruptions occur. The problem is that data often resides on large numbers of devices and evolves rapidly. Systems that collect data at a single location scale poorly and suffer from single-point failures. Here, we discuss the use of a new system, Astrolabe, to automate self-configuration, monitoring, and to control adaptation. Astrolabe operates by creating a virtual system-wide hierarchical database, which evolves as the underlying information changes. Astrolabe is secure, robust under a wide range of failure and attack scenarios, and imposes low loads even under stress.

Consider the continuous distributed monitoring model in which n distributed nodes, receiving individual data streams, are connected to a designated server. The server is asked to continuously monitor a function defined over the values observed across all streams while minimizing the communication. We study a variant in which the server is equipped with a broadcast channel and is supposed to keep track of an approximation of the set of nodes currently observing the.. largest values. Such an approximate set is exact except for some imprecision in an epsilon-neighborhood of the k-th largest value. This approximation of the Top-k-Position monitoring Problem is of interest in cases where marginal changes (e.g. due to noise) in observed values can be ignored so that monitoring an approximation is sufficient and can reduce communication. This paper extends our results from [6], where we have developed a filter-based online algorithm for the (exact) Top-k-Position monitoring Problem. There we have presented a competitive analysis of our algorithm against an offline adversary that also is restricted to filter-based algorithms. Our new algorithms as well as their analyses use new methods. We analyze their competitiveness against adversaries that use both exact and approximate filter-based algorithms, and observe severe differences between the respective powers of these adversaries.

The problem of distributed monitoring has been intensively investigated recently. This paper studies monitoring the top k data objects with the largest aggregate numeric values from distributed data streams within a fixed-size monitoring window W, while minimizing communication cost across the network. We propose a novel algorithm, which reallocates numeric values of data objects among distributed monitoring nodes by assigning revision factors when local constraints are violated, and keeps the local top-k result at distributed nodes in line with the global top-k result. Extensive experiments are conducted on top of Apache Storm to demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our algorithm.

As data becomes dynamic, large, and distributed, there is increasing demand for what have become known as distributed stream algorithms. Since continuously collecting the data to a central server and processing it there incurs very high communication and computation complexities, it is advantageous to define local conditions at the nodes, such that - as long as they are maintained - some desirable global condition holds. A generic algorithm which proved very useful for reducing communication in distributed streaming environments is geometric monitoring (GM). Alas, applying GM to many important tasks is computationally very demanding, as it requires solving a notoriously difficult problem - computing the distance between a point and a surface, which is often very time-consuming even in low dimensions. Thus, while useful for reducing communication, GM often suffers from exceedingly heavy computational burden at the nodes, which renders it very problematic to apply, especially for "thin", battery-operated sensors, which are prevalent in numerous applications, including the "Internet of Things" paradigm. Here we propose a very different approach, designated CB (for Convex/Concave Bounds). CB is based on directly bounding the monitored function by suitably chosen convex and concave functions, that naturally enable monitoring distributed streams. These functions can be checked on the fly, yielding far simpler local conditions than those applied by GM. CB's superiority over GM is demonstrated in reducing computational complexity, by several orders of magnitude in some cases. As an added bonus, CB also reduced communication overhead in all application scenarios we tested.

We present the case of monitoring a decentralized and crowd-sourced network infrastructure, that needs to be monitored over geographically distributed devices at the network edge. It is a characteristic of the target environment that both, the infrastructure to be monitored and the hosts where the monitoring system runs, change over time, and network partitions may happen. The proposed monitoring system is decentralized, and monitoring servers coordinate their actions through an eventually consistent data storage layer deployed at the network edge. We developed a proof-of-concept implementation, which leverages CRDT-based data types provided by AntidoteDB. Our evaluation focuses on the understanding of the continuously updated mapping of monitoring server to network devices, specifically on the effects of different policies for each individual monitoring server to decide on which and how many network devices to monitor. One of the policies is experimented by means of a deployment on 8 real nodes, leveraging the data replication of AntidoteDB in a realistic setting. The observed effects of the different policies are interpreted from the point of view of the trade-off between resource consumption and redundancy.

Decentralized architectures have been proposed using functional hierarchies of several middle-level managers with delegation of management activities. However, no management applications have been implemented and widely used that could sanction this approach for real use. Also, current frameworks or mechanisms in network management do not directly address automation. More efficient network management systems with higher levels of availability and automation are needed. In this paper we propose a design and specify an automated and distributed network services monitoring system for Internet services that should be capable to effectively gather and calculate relevant operational parameters that will be used to determine the availability level of a network or application service. Based on this availability level, the system recommends or automatically triggers a service reconfiguration or a total or partial network service replication.

The SLATE (Services Layer at the Edge) accelerates collaborative scientific computing through a secure container orchestration framework focused on the Science DMZ, enabling creation of advanced multi-institution platforms and novel science gateways. The goal of the SLATE project is to provide a secure federation platform to simplify deployment and operation of complex and often specialized services required by multi-institution scientific collaborations, utilizing where applicable open source, cloud native tooling such as Kubernetes. This paper outlines the design and operation of a monitoring infrastructure suitable for application developers and resource providers which gives visibility to resource utilization and service deployments across a network of independently managed Kubernetes clusters.

Most of the traditional top-k algorithms are based on a single-server setting. They may be highly inefficient and/or cause huge communication overhead when applied to a distributed system environment. Therefore, the problem of top-k monitoring in distributed environments has been intensively investigated recently. This paper studies how to monitor the top-k data objects with the largest aggregate numeric values from distributed data streams within a fixed-size monitoring window W, while minimizing communication cost across the network. We propose a novel algorithm, which adaptively reallocates numeric values of data objects among distributed nodes by assigning revision factors when local constraints are violated and keeps the local top-k result at distributed nodes in line with the global top-k result. We also develop a framework that combines a distributed data stream monitoring architecture with a sliding window model. Based on this framework, extensive experiments are conducted on top of Apache Storm to verify the efficiency and scalability of the proposed algorithm.

This study investigates the environmental and structural impacts of crop and rangeland residue burning in Punjab during April and May 2023, utilizing ground-based interferometric radar alongside atmospheric and land use datasets. The radar system was employed to monitor structural deformations in buildings affected by fire, providing critical insights into the broader impacts of the fires on infrastructure. Multiple ground-based interferometric radars for distributed monitoring can effectively obtain the three-dimensional deformation components of structural targets in real fire scenes. The monitoring results conform to the displacement variation law of existing portal steel frame structures during fire deformation, and can provide effective data support for building structure collapse warning under fire. This approach offers a novel method for assessing the structural integrity of buildings during and after fire events, complementing traditional environmental monitoring. Environmental data show a marked increase in atmospheric pollutants such as NO₂, CH₄, and CO in May 2023, directly linked to the residue burning. Active fire data from FIRMS and MODIS revealed a 98% increase in fire events compared to April, while land surface temperature analysis showed a rise of 1.54%, with affected areas reaching up to 45.9°C. LULC analysis indicated a 23.3% decrease in cropland and rangeland areas, reflecting extensive land clearing. These findings highlight the urgent need for sustainable agricultural management and policies to mitigate the environmental and infrastructural damage caused by residue burning in Punjab. © 2025 The Society for Range Management
