This paper describes many of the opportunities, issues, risks and challenges facing providers of multimedia products and services as today's computer, entertainment, consumer electronics and telecommunication industries converge into a single multimedia information industry. Most of the current research efforts in distributed multimedia applications development are geared towards solving problems by simulating a prototype in a laboratory-controlled environment. In practice, extending and scaling these prototypes to service poses many issues, impediments and challenges. A number of these issues are described herein, along with how they can be resolved through critical multimedia platforms and technologies. An in-depth study of two significant applications, Video Conferencing and Video On Demand, illustrate the opportunities and challenges currently experienced by distributed multimedia applications. Also, studies of architectures, requirements, challenges, trends, value added services, as well as what the future holds for these applications, are included.

The process control industry has many uses for multimedia, from incorporating diverse imaging sensors to visualizing, monitoring, and controlling time-critical processes. A distributed client-server architecture, together with specialized image-processing hardware and a number of commercial products, demonstrates the effectiveness of using multimedia data in a simulated film-coating process.

distributed multimedia applications pose new, interesting challenges in distributed operating system support. This paper focuses on a computational model, i.e. a set of programming system interface abstractions, well-suited for distributed multimedia applications. The paper advocates a mixed approach, based on the use of synchronous languages for programming multimedia synchronization. In particular, we discuss the use of ESTEREL, an imperative synchronous language, as a basic constituent of our mixed computational model, the usefulness and practicality of its semantic features, and its embedding in an asynchronous distributed system.

Future object management systems will need to provide support for a new class of information systems: distributed multimedia design environments. Such environments pose new challenges for object management systems, requiring the integration of object-oriented techniques, distributed systems and multimedia technologies. The resulting systems must address a broad range of requirements and manage objects with a wide variety of characteristics. To meet these challenges a flexible approach to object management is required We demonstrate how such flexibility can be achieved without incurring undue management overheads by considering the implementation of three key features of a distributed object-oriented system: persistence, object migration and access control.

Without user interactions, multimedia presentations are just fancy slide shows with sound and video supports. User interactions by themselves do not change the temporal relationships among multimedia objects, such as texts, graphics, images, audio, and video, but affect the playback schedules. In this paper, we propose a synchronization mechanism to guarantee the quality of multimedia presentation with user interactions. In our protocol, each presentation site requests media transmission from the required media servers at certain time intervals prior to the playback deadlines, when these time intervals are the response times to cover possible experienced end-to-end delays and packet losses, and waits for an initial setup time to ensure intermedia synchronization before starting the presentation. Users may interact with the presentation. This synchronization mechanism solves the problems incurred by user interactions by determining the new presentation scenario produced by the interactive operation, calculating the corresponding setup time, and then rendering the new playback and retrieval schedules.

With recent advances in network technologies and computing power, multimedia systems have become a popular means for information delivery. However, testing of these systems is, difficult. Due to incomplete control of their runtime and communication environment, precise temporal properties of multimedia systems are nonreproducible. Traditional software testing, which mainly deals with functional correctness, cannot be directly applied to testing temporal properties. Furthermore, time points are hard to be measured exactly, and in this sense are nondeterministic and nonreproducible. To address this problem, we propose a framework for testing the generic temporal properties of media objects in distributed multimedia software systems (DMSS). The timing properties are based on Allen's basic binary temporal relations between two objects, which can be extended to cover multiple objects. We have developed techniques for test case generation, and test result analysis based on a distributed tester architecture. Test templates are used in test case generation to reduce the possibility of human error, and the entire testing procedure can be automated. A prototype system has been built to test a DEC HPAS multimedia presentation system, which is a multimedia system supporting W3C's SMIL standard. Detailed discussions on practical issues illustrated with a number of actual tests are given. Experimental results have shown that our framework is effective in detecting errors in temporal properties. Furthermore, ways to reduce the test effort have been discussed, and guidelines for coming up with criteria for verdict computation based on the real-time requirements of the applications have been suggested.

multimedia systems must be able to support a certain quality of service (QoS) to satisfy the stringent real-time performance requirements of their applications. HeiRAT, the Heidelberg Resource Administration Technique, is a comprehensive QoS management system that was designed and implemented in connection with a distributed multimedia platform for networked PCs and workstations. HeiRAT includes techniques for QoS negotiation, QoS calculation, resource reservation, and resource scheduling for local and network resources.

This paper is derived from a keynote address given that the DMS-03 meeting. It chronicles the need and development of next generation networks (NGN) in the United States. Specific organizational examples are derived from the Internet2-Abilene Network. The technical characteristics of a next generation network versus the Internet are discussed. Examples are given from the point of view of the need for a quality of service based network to deliver distributed multimedia healthcare information to the point of need. The concepts of network trust and of a network based scalable information infrastructure for the reliable delivery of distributed multimedia information is also introduced.

Traditionally, security and functional features of multimedia applications have been designed largely separately. Various new requirements of and constraints on many emerging distributed multimedia applications, however., have necessitated a joint consideration of the security architecture and functionality of distributed multimedia. In this paper, we highlight the importance of the inter-play between security primitives, signal processing and networking technologies. We provide an overview of several recent approaches that aimed to address this joint design issue, including format-compliant content protection, fully scalable content protection and consumption, and signal-processing based content and network security. We discuss some potential implications in the context of emerging peer-to-peer and ad hoc sensor networks.
