Analysis, management and indexing of distributed multimedia performances based on audience feedback

Interactive performance systems allow multiple, networked users to take part in a performance either as players or audience members and influence the performance's development in real time. Among the most prominent research issues concerning the development of these systems are the provision of effective interaction capabilities and adequate means of expression to the audience. This article describes a set of methods for the detection, analysis, synchronization and rendering of audience behavior in real-time during such an event. Furthermore, it describes ways in which audience feedback is utilized to dynamically index the contents of a performance so as to embed this event in large-scale multimedia services. All these methods have been applied in the creation of MISSION, a multi-user game involving both players and audience. This article presents and analyzes the design of the system and the results of user trials with it.

Currently, the applications of surveillance system have been increasingly widespread. But there are few surveillance platforms that can meet the requirement of large-scale, cross-regional, and flexible surveillance business. In the paper, we present a distributed surveillance system platform to improve safety and security of the society. The system is constructed by an object-oriented middleware called as Internet Communications Engine (ICE). This middleware helps our platform to integrate a lot of surveillance resource of the society and accommodate diverse range of surveillance industry requirements. In the follow sections, we will describe in detail the design concepts of system and introduce traits of ICE.

JASMINE: A Java tool for multimedia collaboration on the Internet

Although collaboration tools have existed for a long time [8], Internet-based multimedia collaboration has recently received a lot of attention mainly due to easy accessibility of the Internet by ordinary users. The Java platform and programming language has also introduced yet another level of easy access: platform-independent computing. As a result, it is very attractive to use Java to design multimedia collaboration systems for the Internet. Today there are many systems, which use Java for multimedia collaboration. However, most of these systems require the shared Java application to be re-written according to the collaboration system's Application Programming Interface (API)-a task which is sometimes difficult or even impossible. In this paper, we describe a practical approach for transparent collaboration with Java. Our approach is transparent in that the Java application can be shared as is with no modifications. The main idea behind our system is that user events occurring through the interactions with the application can be caught, distributed, and reconstructed, hence allowing Java applications to be shared transparently. Our architecture allows us to make the huge installed base of Java applications collaborative, without any modification to their original code. We also prove the feasibility of our architecture by implementation of the JASMINE 1 prototype.

With recent advances in networking and workstation technology, a variety of distributed multimedia applications are now becoming feasible, e.g. multimedia desktop conferencing and distance learning. However, the deployment of such applications has so far been rather limited. In the authors' opinion this limited deployment is largely explained by the immature state of distributed multimedia system support technologies rather than a lack of creativity on the part of application developers. The present paper therefore attempts to increase awareness of the relevant support technology issues by presenting a discussion of the state of the art in the key technologies of multimedia communications and distributed systems. It is argued that, while significant advances have been made on specific topics such as high performance transport protocols and real-time process scheduling in operating systems, considerable research is still required to produce a complete, integrated solution to the support of distributed multimedia applications.

MHEGAM - A multimedia messaging system

MHEGAM (MHEG-1 Advanced Mail) is a complete multimedia messaging system for the creation, exchange, and restitution of multimedia messages that express spatial and temporal synchronization among their components. MHEGAM can be based on the standard messaging systems X.420 or MIME. We present the multimedia extensions MHEGAM-X.420 and MHEGAM-MIME and discuss the multimedia message format and architecture components for both systems.

An experimental service composition tool for media-centric networked applications

In order to explore diverse type of media-centric service composition in real environments, we have built a service-oriented testbed named as FIRST@PC (Future Internet Research on Sustainable Testbed based on PC). FIRST@PC targets a flexible and cost-effective testing environment where media-centric service compositions are flexibly realized on top of computing/networking resources. In this paper we design and implement an OMX (Open Media eXperiment for service composition) experiment control tool to support media-centric service composition. By following the SOC (service-oriented computing) paradigm, the OMX tool assists experimenters to flexibly integrate computing and networking services. To explore the possibility of media-centric service composition, we also prototype the FIRST@PC testbed consisting of multimedia computing and networking devices. Quality-of-service architecture: Monitoring and control of multimedia communications

For distributed multimedia applications the provision of system-wide quality of service (QoS) is essential. The quality-of-service architecture (QoS-A) developed at Lancaster University offers a framework to specify and implement the required performance properties of multimedia applications over integrated-service networks in a heterogeneous environment. The work addresses the problem of lower-level QoS as well as QoS support for multipeer multimedia applications operating in an open communication system. QoS filters have been developed to deal with the problems of heterogeneity in group communication environments. New challenges are also encountered in emerging mobile networks and user mobility;and recent developments in the Internet community highlight the need for appropriate QoS support mechanisms for multimedia applications. The paper describes how the QoS-A research at Lancaster University provides a flexible framework for the monitoring and control of multimedia communications across the broad range of computing systems and networks.

A new distributed QoS routing algorithm for supporting real-time communication in high-speed networks

distributed multimedia applications are often sensitive to the Quality of Service (QoS) provided by the communication network. They usually require guaranteed QoS service, so that real-time communication is possible. However, searching a route with multiple QoS constraints is known to be a NP-complete problem. In this paper, we propose a new simple and efficient distributed QoS routing algorithm, called ''DQoSR,'' for supporting real-time communication in high-speed networks. It searches a route that could guarantee bandwidth, delay, and delay jitter requirements. Routing decision is based only on the modified cost, hop and delay vectors stored in the routing table at each node and its directly connected neighbors. Moreover, DQoSR is proved to construct loop-free routes. Its worst case message complexity is O(\V\(2)), where \V\ is the number of nodes in the network. Thus DQoSR is fast and scales well to large networks. Finally, extensive simulations show that average rate of establishing successful connection of DQoSR is very near to optimum (the difference is less than 0.4%).

Recent advances in distributed multimedia technologies encourage the development of interactive performance systems. These systems allow multiple users to take part in a performance either as players or spectators and influence its development in real time. However, in order for these applications to become effective they have to provide meaningful interaction capabilities and adequate means of expression to all the participants. This research provide an interaction framework that seeks to address these requirements. In particular, the system allows players and spectators to exchange messages during the performance. These messages describe player actions and audience reactions. Furthermore, the framework monitors the development of the event and analyzes the behavior of the participants in order to: (i) detect and render shared audience reactions (ii) achieve a high degree of audience engagement. Finally, the system synchronizes the presentation of audience reactions with performance developments at each site. This method has been applied in MISSION, a multi-player game on the Web.

Introducing QoS awareness in distributed programming: QTcl

A number of distributed applications require communication services with quality of service (QoS) guarantees. Building global-scale distributed systems with predictable properties is one of the great challenges for computer systems engineering in the new century. Work undertaken within the Internet Engineering Task Force has led to the definition of novel architectural models for the Internet with QoS support. According to these models, the network has to be appropriately configured in order to provide applications with the required performance guarantees. In next-generation networks, enabling applications to interact with the underlying QoS services is of primary importance. Hence, several special-purpose application programming interfaces (APIs) have been defined to let applications negotiate QoS parameters across QoS-capable networks. However, so far, none of these APIs are available in different operating environments. We believe that such features should be embedded in programming environments for distributed applications. In this work we present how we included QoS control features in Tcl, a programming language that has been widely adopted for the development of distributed multimedia applications. Our work has led to the implementation of QTcl, an extended Tcl interpreter that provides programmers with a new set of primitives, in full compliance with the standard SCRAM programming interface for the RSVP protocol. QTcl in highly portable, in that it enables standard QoS negotiation to be performed in a seamless fashion on the most common operating systems. Copyright (C) 2003 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.
