So far, many kinds of distributed multimedia systems have been widely used and multimedia data, including audio and video, are the main data objects to be transmitted over network. The characteristics of multimedia data bring special QoS demand for a distributed multimedia system. In this paper, an integrated performance analysis model P W for distributed multimedia system is proposed. Based on model PAM, QoS evaluation metrics for the system is researched, and four parameters are deduced to describe the performance of network, destination buffer and multimedia streams. The QoS evaluation metrics can be used to get a comprehensive view of the QoS for a distributed multimedia system.

In this paper, we address the issue of rendering network-based multimedia services under the guarantee of access delay. We propose a novel strategy, referred to as Window-assisted Video Partitioning (WAVP), for rendering cost-effective multimedia services. To minimize the service cost and maximize the number of requests that can be successfully served under resource constraints (cache capacity and link bandwidth), our WAVP strategy partitions videos into multiple portions and delivers them by adaptive schedule windows. We precisely implement our work for testing in real-life situation, and analyze the performance under several influencing parameters such as the availability of link bandwidth, cache capacity, and the bound of clients' access delay. Our results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the service cost and achieve a high acceptance ratio under the constraints of network resources.

One of the major requirements of distributed multimedia applications is the need to maintain often complex, real-time synchronization constraints, More specifically, it is necessary to be able to manage arbitrary intra- and inter-media synchronization across activities in the distributed environment. Furthermore, it is important that such developments are integrated into emerging object-oriented standards for distributed computing. This paper presents an object-oriented programming model and associated implementation to meet these requirements. The main concepts behind the proposed approach are, firstly, the use of reactive objects for real-time control and synchronization and, secondly, quality of service controlled bindings for predictable communication between objects, The flexibility of the approach is demonstrated by three contrasting examples of real-time synchronization. The implementation extends the realtime capabilities of the Chorus micro-kernel by introducing the concepts of rtports, rthandlers and quality of service controlled connections, The paper demonstrates how reactive objects and bindings are realized on this infrastructure.

The real-time requirements of continuous media call for careful resource management in distributed multimedia systems. In complex and mobile systems, however, effective resource reservation becomes almost impossible. Recent research suggests adaptive applications as a complementary solution. This article reviews heterogeneous networks and the rationale behind adaptation, gives implementation examples, and discusses some outstanding research issues.

A window-assisted video partitioning strategy for partitioning and caching video streams in distributed multimedia systems

In this paper, we address the issue of efficiently streaming a set of heterogenous videos under the constraint of service latency over a scalable multimedia systems. We propose a novel strategy, referred to as window-assisted video partitioning (WAVP), for rendering cost-effective multimedia services. The objective is to minimize the service cost and maximize the number of requests that can be successfully served under resources constraints (cache capacity and link bandwidth). We formulate the problem of video partitioning as an optimization of both bandwidth resources and cache space, and derive the optimal schedule window for different video portions under consideration of time constraints, the popularities and the sizes of the video portions. In WAVP, video are partitioned into multiple portions and delivered according to by adaptive schedule windows. We prove that WAVP strategy not only optimize the service cost but also be able to serve requests under the time constraints without causing too much delay. We conduct mathematical analysis and derive certain performance bounds that quantify the overall performance of the strategy. It shows that the service cost can be optimized by adjusting the schedule window and resources utilization can be improved as video streams are partitioned into multiple portions. We evaluate the performance under several influencing parameters such as available bandwidth, cache capacity, and partition gradients. Simulation results show that our proposed method can not only significantly reduce the service cost under tight time constraints and with low partition overhead, but also balance the utilization of network resources to achieve high acceptance ratio with low average service cost. A prioritized Petri Net model and its application in distributed multimedia systems

The achievement of media synchronization has been dealt with in the Object Composition Petri Net (OCPN) model and the extended OCPN (XOCPN) model. Yet these two models are not enough for synchronization of computers in a distributed environment. This paper proposes a new Petri Net model-Prioritized Petri Net (P-net). The modeling power and properties of P-nets are analyzed. We apply the P-net model to distributed multimedia synchronization, using our version of distributed Object Composition Petri Net (DOCPN) model. Using the DOCPN model, we can coordinate operations among distributed computer sites. The scenario is like a conductor conducting an orchestra to perform a symphony.

Dynamic scheduling of multimedia documents in a single server multiple clients environment

In a typical single server and multiple client distributed multimedia system, clients may send sporadic requests to the server for certain multimedia documents. The requests must be served with a fast response time and with the required quality of service guarantee. This requires the server to determine the transmission schedule of each multimedia stream while ensuring necessary inter- and intrastream synchronizations. There are two major drawbacks in the existing scheduling algorithms. First, it is assumed that all channels are available at the beginning of the scheduling, but in reality, requests arrive when others are in service;second, the cost of the scheduling itself is usually ignored. In general a feasible scheduling algorithm should have the following features: (1) the schedule must be generated in real time, (2) it should have small scheduling cost, and (3) it must be capable of handling multiple requests from multiple clients. In this paper, we propose two dynamic scheduling algorithms whose worst time complexity is O(n log nm + nm), where n is the total number of data units in a retrieved multimedia document and m denotes the number of available channels. The salient feature of the proposed algorithms is their inherent dynamic nature which can adjust the scheduling times for each individual request according to the slack time between consecutive requests. If the slack time between two requests is large, the scheduler can run longer in an attempt to find a better solution. This reduces the response time while maintaining a good quality of presentation. Through both simulation and analysis, we evaluate our algorithms and demonstrate their applicability in a realistic environment. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Bitstream scaling and encoding methods for MPEG video dedicated to media synchronization in a network

This paper proposes a bitstream scaling technique for MPEG video for the purpose of media synchronizations. The proposed scaling technique can reduce the frame rate as well as the bit rate of an MPEG data sequence to fit them to the values specified by a synchronization system. The advantage of the proposed technique over existing scaling methods is that it is considering not only the performance of synchronization but also the picture quality of the resulting sequences. To further improve the quality of sequences scaled by the proposed method, this paper also proposes an MPEG encoding technique which sets some of the parameters suitable for the scaling. An experiment using these techniques in an actual media synchronization system has illustrated the usefulness of the proposed approach.

multimedia is defined as the integrated generation, representation, processing, storage, and dissemination of independent machine-processable information expressed in multiple time-dependent and time-independent media such as data, graphics, drawings, voice, audio, and video. The characteristics of synchronization mechanisms desirable for central and distributed multimedia systems are addressed. The concept of multimedia objects as components of an object-based model for a multimedia system is introduced. The essential new synchronization requirement is restricted blocking together with synchronization features covering real-time aspects. Existing synchronization mechanisms can be altered or new ones defined to meet these requirements.
