An electronic broker for business-to-business electronic commerce on the Internet

distributed object standards provide a key to building interoperable applications that can run on a range of platforms. The paper describes a CORBA-based research prototype for an electronic broker in business-to-business electronic commerce. High-level IDL specifications are used to achieve interoperability between components of the electronic marketplace. The two key functionalities of the electronic broker are the ability to dynamically gather information from remote electronic catalogs and the support for negotiations through auction mechanisms. The paper discusses the functionality and the design of the electronic broker and gives an overview of current extensions of the prototype. As application-level interoperability is a crucial precondition for many brokerage services, we put special emphasis on electronic commerce protocol standards.

Most of the Java applets on the Web today are developed primarily for visualization and 3D interactive amination. Serious doubts have been raised about the feasibility of using Java in the domain of enterprise applications. Compared with the conventional CGI-based approach for developing database applications, Java-based approach provides a high degree of flexibility, scalability, portability and robustness. Through the use of HORB, a software tool based on the concept of object Request Broker, Java client and server objects can be created easily and accessed transparently. A methodology using Java and HORB for developing database applications is proposed, with the objective to establish a robust Web infrastructure in a corporate environment.

Digital medical informatics and images are commonly used in hospitals today,. Because of the interrelatedness of the radiology department and other departments, especially the intensive care unit and emergency department, the transmission and sharing of medical images has become a critical issue. Our research group has developed a Java-based distributed medical informatics(DMI) framework to facilitate the rapid development and deployment of medical imaging applications in a distributed environment that can be shared and used by related departments and mobile physicians. Java Based distributed medical informatics is a unique suite of multimedia telemedicine applications developed for the use by medical related organizations. The applications support real-time patients' data, image files, audio and video diagnosis annotation exchanges. The DMI enables joint collaboration between radiologists and physicians while they are at distant geographical locations. The DMI environment consists of heterogeneous, autonomous, and legacy resources. The Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), and Java language provide the capability to combine the DMI resources into an integrated, interoperable, and scalable system. The underneath technology, including IDL ORB, Event Service, HOP JDBC/ODBC, legacy system wrapping and Java implementation are explored. This paper explores a distributed collaborative CORBA/JDBC based framework that will enhance medical information management requirements and development. It highlights the capability of DMI both in hardware and software as technologically independent. It encompasses a new paradigm for the delivery of health services that requires process reengineering, cultural changes, as well as organizational changes

The National Solar Observatory is nearing completion of the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) project. SOLIS will replace the existing capabilities of the Vacuum Telescope on Kitt Peak near Tucson, Arizona and will provide new scientific capabilities over its expected 25 year life-time. The evolution of the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and the availability of compliant object Request Brokers (ORBS) and Common object Services (COS) facilitates the development of cross-platform, multi-language software systems that are reliable and flexible. The SOLIS Communications System employs three ORBs, a naming service and a notification service to support the project's core distributed and real-time control systems that are written primarily in Java or C++ for the Linux, Solaris and VxWorks operating systems. One particularly useful aspect of the communications system is the ease of event monitoring demonstrated by the development of tools such as a logging service and a generic instrument control graphical user interface.

This paper presents two contributions to the study of CORBA performance over high-speed networks. First, we measure the latency of various types and sizes of two way client requests using a pair of widely used implementations of CORBA - Orbit 2.1 and VisiBroker for C++ 2.0. Second, we use Orbit and VisiBroker to measure the scalability of CORBA servers in terms of the number of objects they can support efficiently. These experiments extend our previous work on CORBA performance for bandwidth-sensitive applications (such as satellite surveillance, medical imaging, and teleconferencing). Our results show that the latency for CORBA implementations is relatively high and server scalability is relatively low. Our latency experiments show that non-optimized internal buffering in CORBA implementations can cause substantial delay variance, which is unacceptable in many real-time or constrained-latency applications. Likewise, our scalability experiments reveal that neither Orbit nor VisiBroker can handle a large number of objects in a single server process.

Few information systems today offer a clear and flexible means to define and manage the automated part of radiology processes. None of them provide a coherent and scalable architecture that can easily cope with heterogeneity and inevitable local adaptation of applications. Most importantly, they often lack a model that can integrate clinical and administrative information to aid better decisions in managing resources, optimizing operations, and improving productivity. Digital radiology enterprises require cost-effective solutions to deliver information to the right person in the right place and at the right time. We propose a new architecture of image information management systems for digital radiology enterprises. Such a system is based on the emerging technologies in workflow management, distributed object computing, and Java acid Web techniques, as well as Philips' domain knowledge in radiology operations. Our design adapts the approach of "4+1" architectural view. In this new architecture, PACS and RIS will become one while the user interaction can be automated by customized workflow process. Clinical service applications are implemented as active components. They can be reasonably substituted by applications of local adaptations and can be multiplied for fault tolerance and load balancing. Furthermore, it will provide powerful query and statistical functions for managing resources and improving productivity in real time. This work will lead to a new direction of image information management in the next millennium. We will illustrate the innovative design with implemented examples of a working prototype.

The distributed enterprise systems encountered in domains such as finance, telecommunications, health, and aerospace tend to be large, complex and resource intensive, it is crucial that these systems are designed with robust and resilient software architectures that are efficient to construct and flexible to change. This paper describes the requirements of enterprise software architectures and examines the Unified Modeling Language (UML) constructs and techniques that specify them. These constructs, derived from field-proven methods such as objectory, Booch, OMT, RSEB and the Unified Software Development Process, can be used to specify various enterprise architecture structures and behavior. It explains how UML can be used to model architectural views, and discusses the role of process in architectural modeling. After summarizing outstanding issues, the discussion concludes with recommendations to refine and extend UML to provide better support for architectural modeling.

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a dynamic fuzzy-decision based load balancing system incorporated in a distributed object computing environment. The proposed approach works by using a fuzzy logic controller which informs a client object to use the most appropriate service such that load balancing among servers is achieved. We have chosen Jini to build our experimental middleware platform, on which our proposed approach as well as other approaches are implemented and compared. Extensive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of our fuzzy-decision based approach, which is found to be consistently better than other approaches.

Coordinating a complex array of deployed assets is a difficult task. Defence employs Tactical Data Link (TDL)s to maintain situation awareness and convey the intent of command and control information. Connectivity is achieved using digital radio communication systems that conform to present military TDL standard waveforms. Managing a TDL is inherently complex and typically requires operators (called TDL Network Managers (TDLNMs)) to actively manage these networks. These TDLNMs are trained military personnel and, due to the transient nature of their careers, most are posted within a few years and are often replaced with less experienced operators. Given this fluctuating level of experience, a Decision Support System (DSS) is being considered to assist the operators in maintaining a network. This chapter describes the conceptual design of an agent-based DSS, that could be used to support an operator, who is responsible for monitoring and optimizing a TDL. This includes tasks such as monitoring, troubleshooting and modifying various aspects of the TDL in order to maintain the required levels of connectivity and performance. One of the key tools used to support this role is a computer-based Network Management System (NMS). The proposed DSS could be developed using an Agent Architecture Framework (AAF) and integrated with the DSS based on distributed object computing (DOC) technology. This approach minimizes the risk of integration between the NMS and the DSS, whilst allowing flexibility for future integration requirements. Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) techniques could also be employed to capture and encode the expertise required for the DSS to operate effectively.
