distributedobject-oriented systems provide a natural way of representing distributed application problems and offer a high level of distribution abstraction. To manage such environments, the notion of collections of objects with specific semantics, i.e. objectgroups, can be very helpful and has been applied in several areas. The major contribution of the paper is to introduce an abstraction facility to handle common aspects of distribution objectgroups in a uniform way. After the discussion of existing kinds of objectgroups, a new approach based on language and runtime support is presented to implement this abstraction. Common issues covered by it are the the representation, instantiation and termination of groups, the handling of conflicting groups, and the application of generic group operations like status inquiries or voluntary enrollment. The provided abstraction is specialized by applying it to different examples like group communication, group-based distributedobject allocation, or group-based resource management.
