Factors influencing the design of a prototype decision support application for a distributed object management project

The development of decision support systems is motivated by socio-economic demand, and the opportunities offered by new hardware and software technologies. It goes without saying that these factors mutually stimulate each other as well. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the issues influencing the design of a prototype decision support application for a distributed object management project. Emphasis is put on features that are likely to gain widespread use since backed by mainstream companies. These are the role of deep knowledge processing tools, multimedia, and objectoriented approaches.

Supporting mobile multimedia applications through adaptive middleware

The traditional approach to developing middleware platforms is to adopt a "black box" philosophy whereby the platform offers a fixed programming model to applications together with fixed per-platform implementations. In this paper, we describe research which is exploring an open approach to the implementation of middleware platforms, Our motivation is to accommodate the demanding requirements for quality-of-service (QoS) adaptation as imposed by mobile multimedia applications. We use an extended CORBA computational model featuring the concept of explicit open bindings, This provides an architectural framework for openness and QoS adaptation. The paper concludes by considering the more general application of an open systems philosophy;in particular, we introduce the concept of reflective middleware.

For digital libraries to thrive, the providers of information and information processing services must be able to evolve their systems autonomously. However, as the complexity of their offerings increases, software tools more sophisticated than existing Web facilities are needed. distributed object technology may be the answer. The availability of high-volume, increasingly sophisticated information is making the need for metadata facilities more urgent. Traditional, library-based approaches break down when used in an advanced digital library. More modular mechanisms are needed, and the CORBA system is one approach. Digital libraries are affected at a deep technical level by the widely differing user traditions of Web users and library patrons. The challenge and opportunity of digital libraries will be the synthesis of these traditions. Four pears ago the authors of this article set out to create a technical infrastructure to support the construction of digital libraries. In their view a digital library comprises widely distributed resources that can be maintained autonomously by different organizations and will not require adherence to uniform interfaces.

Application integration has become the 'philosopher's stone' for many industrial companies. Many integration projects have succeeded in solving the problem they set themselves, but left the problem of integration unsolved. The integration of applications for a complex design environment is particularly rich in such projects. In the author's experience, a broader view of integration is needed, and several complementary models of integration are described, together with a list of 12 different design issues that integration projects need to resolve. It is not claimed that a project covering all these features will succeed, but rather an absence of a feature is an indication that the project will fail.

Using interceptors to enhance CORBA

The integration of distributed computing and the object model leads to distributed object computing, in which objects rather than processes are distributed across multiple computers. A well-established standard for distributed object computing is the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). Previously, you would have had to create-and enable the application to use-the components that provide such additional capabilities. Using these components requires specialized knowledge and understanding of problems outside the application domain. With the advent of interceptors-non-application components that can alter application behavior-you can enhance CORBA applications at runtime with components whose operation is transparent to both the application and the CORBA framework, modifying application behavior without modifying the application or the CORBA framework.

Extending a scientific application with scripting capabilities

Like many of us, your application probably started out small. you had severalsubroutines you used daily, and over time, other people started using them as well. the more peopleused your subroutines, however, the more changes and additions became inevitable. To satisfy allthe demands, you decide that adding scripting capability to your application was the answer, butwhat's the best approach? I picked COM (the Component object Modelto implement scriptingcapability in Shvib for Windows. Shvib is a shock and vibration analysis program based on TomDerby's Fortran subroutines that I have been developing at Barry Controls. Freely and commerciallyavailable scripting languages abound out there, but after investigating some of them, I decided touse Python as a scripting language for Shvib. Shvib has a Visual Basi6 GUI and several Fortransubroutines compiled as Windows DLLs to perform computations. Because Shvib is a Windowsapplication, COM was the natural choice to glue the Visual BasiGUI, the Fortran DLLs, and Pythonscripting together.

We claim that distributed object-oriented systems must provide a higher level of abstraction to their users, than usually provided. Especially, it is necessary to provide application-oriented, intelligent aggregates of objects with transparent distribution of their elements. Beside that, it seems to be not only reasonable, but also relatively easy to connect persistence with distribution. A system, offering distributed and persistent polymorphic sets of objects, on the level of a clean, type safe programming language is introduced. The user of such a system gets distribution and persistence in the same ''natural'' way, as users of traditional systems get volatile arrays of numbers or classes of objects.

Design and implementation of an OLE for process control unified architecture aggregating server for a group of flexible manufacturing systems

The article focuses on the development of an OPC UA (object linking and embedding (OLE) for process control unified architecture) server. One of the major concerns regarding this new specification is the migration from the old component object model (COM) to the new UA specification. From the various migration strategies described in this article, the authors' server represents a special adapter software solution which aggregates several COM servers, one for each flexible manufacturing system (FMS) modelled in the address space of the UA server. The article focuses on the advantages introduced by the new specification like the unified modelling capability and the extensible meta model. The address space is exemplified by means of a screw fitting station, which is part of the flexible line, on which the UA server has been tested. From the four generally accepted use cases, the server implements the first two: observation and control. They are mainly supported through the variables and the methods of the address space. During the testing phase, the minimum sampling interval regarding the communication with the underlying COM servers has been determined for a different number of FMSs. As a result the special adapter software solution is a fast but also a well-performing approach, which works well even in very complex environments.

Component-based development: From buzz to spark

Component-based development (CBD) is the building of software systems out of prepackaged generic elements. The current excitement about CBD results from the convergence of four phenomena originating from quite different backgrounds: on the scientific side, the progress of modern software engineering ideas with their special emphasis on reuse. On the industrial side, the widespread success of theoretically unpretentious but practically useful techniques for building GUIs, databases, and other parts of applications out of components. On the political side, the push by some of the major players for competing interconnection technologies: CORBA, COM, and Enterprise JavaBeans. In the software world at large, the generalization of object technology, which provides both the conceptual basis and the practical tools for building and using components. The catalyst behind component-based development is the growing realization by the software industry that something must be done to control the costs of developing software products and boosting their quality
