Preventing deadlocks and starvation in distributed object oriented systems

This paper proposes a deadlock prevention algorithm for distributed object oriented systems based on the popular resource ordering technique. In distributed object oriented system, objects are the resources requested by the transactions. Though resource-ordering technique is not new, novelty of the proposed deadlock prevention algorithm lies in exploiting the relationships among objects present in the domain to do the resource ordering. Resource ordering rules are formally represented using predicate calculus. This algorithm also addresses the elimination of starvation in wealth and starvation in poverty by proposing a combination of timestamp and expedient access ordering of transactions in accessing the resources. This paper discusses the implementation of a distributed execution environment, DJO, which supports the use of shared Java objects for parallel and distributed applications and provides the Java programmer with the illusion of a network-wide shared object space on loosely coupled distributed systems. DJO supports shared objects through an implementation of multiple reader/single writer write-invalidate DSM protocol in software, providing the shared memory abstraction at object granularity. object distribution and sharing are implemented through the replication mechanism, transparently to application. The system enforces mutual consistency among replicas of an object. The main benefits of DJO are enhanced availability and performance due to the replicated object model and easier application design, as the underlying software takes care of distribution and memory consistency issues. The paper presents an approach to distributed Java monitoring based on an extension to the on-line monitoring interface specification that defines relationships between a monitoring system and on-line tools used to support the development of Java applications. The extension aims at defining a standard for an open interface that supports on-line software development tools. The paper also presents the implementation ideas on building a monitoring infrastructure based on the specification. This comprises the architecture of the infrastructure, the mechanism of interaction with the Java virtual machine, and sample scenarios of interactions between the tool and the monitoring system. The infrastructure provides a uniform monitoring support for different kinds of tools, like debuggers or performance analysers. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Legion: Lessons learned building a grid operating system

Legion was the first integrated grid iniddleware architected from first principles to address the complexity of grid envirounients. Just as a traditional operating system provides an abstract interface to the underlying physical resources of a machine, Legion was designed to provide a powerful virtual machine interface layered over the distributed, heterogeneous, autonomous, and fault-prone physical and logical resources that constitute a grid. We believe that without a solid, integrated, operating system-like grid middleware, grids will fail to cross the chasm from bleeding-edge supercomputing users to more mainstream computing. This paper provides an overview of the architectural principles that drove Legion, a high-level description of the system with complete references to more detailed explanations, and the history of Legion from first inception in August 1993 through commercialization. We present a number of important lessons, both technical and sociological, learned during the course of developing and deploying Legion.

Mobile agent model for transaction processing on distributed objects

Application programs are performed on clients while issuing requests to object servers. Then, the object servers send responses to the clients. On the other hand, programs named agents move to object servers where the agents can manipulate objects in a mobile agent approach. If agents complete manipulating objects in the servers, the agents move to other object servers. If an agent conflicts with other agents on an object server, the agents negotiate with each other to resolve the confliction. If the object servers are faulty, agent find another object server where the agent can be performed. Each agent has its own commitment condition like atomic and at-least-one conditions. For example, an agent can commit if the agent successfully manipulate at least one object server. In this paper, we discuss how to perform agents with different constraints on multiple object servers in presence of servers and agent faults. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Using distributed object middleware to implement scalable workflow management systems

Support of distributed workflow execution and scalability are important issues for workflow management systems. Many cooperating workflow servers should build up a distributed workflow management system to meet the requirements especially of large enterprises. In these enterprises, access to workflows is usually restricted by certain organizational. Consequently, if an agent wants to start a workflow, only a small subset of the workflow servers of the enterprise is eligible to serve this request. One of them has to be selected. In this paper, we develop a formalization of these organizational rules and we provide a generally applicable distributed execution model for workflows, which is based on the distributed execution of subworkflows. This model is implemented by an advanced distributed object middleware. The distributed object system uses the organizational rules to implement the coordination among the workflow servers and to implement the load balancing and scheduling of workflow instances. © 1999, IOS Press. Administration rights in the SDSD-system

The SDSD-system offers state-dependent access control in distributed object systems. The system enforces protocols which declare sets of activity sequences as allowed, thereby forbidding any occurence of an activity outside the context of an allowed sequence. In this paper we conceptually extend the SDSD-system by introducing discretionary administration rights for controlling the activities of declaring, binding and starting SDSD-protocols. Additionally, we introduce second level administration rights for controlling the grant and revoke activities concerning administration rights. Exploiting the powerful potentials of the SDSD-system, the new concepts are implemented by special administration protocols. Administration protocols are enforced with the same techniques already used for application protocols concerning the functionality of the underlying object system. In this environment recursive revocation is shown to be feasible.

In this paper we discuss a general-purpose, portable, and extensible approach to handle comprehensive monitoring information from a Java run-time environment, based on an extension to the On-line Monitoring Interface Specification (OMIS). The main goal of the Java extension to OMIS is to create an interface that will be used to build an OMIS compliant monitoring system as well as to adapt existing tools and to build new ones for monitoring distributed Java applications. The issues covered include enhancements at the specification level. Tools based on this framework are intended to generate problem-oriented requests and handle response information in a uniform way independent of the tools' specifics and the monitoring system's implementation.

The paper presents a concept of an implementation of an extension to the On-Line Monitoring Interface Specification for Java Applications. The extension aims at defining an open interface for providing on-line software development tools. The general-purpose, portable, and extensible approach to handle comprehensive monitoring information from a Java run-time environment is intended to span the existing gap between the needs in Java application development tools and the lack of a uniform environment which provides monitoring support for different kinds of tools, like debuggers or performance analysers. The main goal of the resulting monitoring system is to adapt existing tools and build new ones for monitoring Java distributed applications.

Aspects of a massively distributed stable component space

Modern healthcare requires massively distributed virtual electronic patient records. Recent component-based approaches are the best available solutions for the development of such systems. However, all of today's solutions have one very important problem: they do not support consistent and robust object-addressing for the dynamic case, although this is one of the most crucial features in massively distributed environments. The goal that has to be achieved is to replace physical addresses by stable and robust logical handles, managed by a distributed lookup service. Naive implementations suffer from very severe scalability problems that have to be overcome without violating robustness requirements. DOLSA (=distributed object Lookup Service Algorithm) is designed to provide a lookup-based object addressing mechanism that is robust against any kind of object-, server- and network-dynamics. The algorithm is fully scalable in respect to the number of managed mappings, the number of lookup-requests, the number of distributed servers and the number (and frequency) of object movement operations.
