Flexible robust programming in distributed object systems

distributed applications that access persistent objects must maintain object state consistency even when failures are encountered during the manipulation of such objects. The basic transaction model, which has been implemented by several systems to ensure consistent executions of distributed applications, is not flexible enough to meet the requirements of many complex distributed applications. This has also been recognized for advanced database applications and, as a result, extended transaction models have been developed. We argue that distributed applications that manipulate long-lived data can benefit from such transaction models. We take an approach which views the various transaction models as policies for building robust applications. Thus, we advocate that the system implement several transaction models. A robust application can be programmed in such a system using a combination of several transaction models to meet its consistency requirements. We use applications from the domain of computer-supported cooperative work to motivate such an approach. We also develop a set of system-level mechanisms which can be used to implement multiple transaction models in a uniform manner. These mechanisms are used to implement nested, split, and cooperating transaction models. A prototype system that has been implemented is described to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.

This paper describes a Resource Management System for a soft real-time distributed object system that is based on a three-level feedback loop. The Resource Management System employs a profiling algorithm that monitors the usage of the resources, a least laxity scheduling algorithm that schedules the methods of the tasks, and hot spot and cooling algorithms that allocate and migrate objects to balance the loads on the resources. The Resource Management System consists of a single Resource Manager for the distributed system, and a Profiler and a Scheduler located on each of the processors in the distributed system. The paper shows how role-based access control (RBAC) models can be implemented in distributed object-based systems that follow OMG/ORB standards. The paper introduces a novel approach that provides for automatic role activation by the security components of the middleware, which brings role-based access control to security-unaware applications. Role-based access control has been being recognized as an integration to traditional discretionary and mandatory access control models.

Exception handling in concurrent and distributed programs is a difficult task though it is often necessary. In many cases traditional exception mechanisms for sequential programs are no longer appropriate. One major difficulty is that the process of handling an exception may need to involve multiple concurrent components that are cooperating in pursuit of some global goal. Another complication is that several exceptions may be raised concurrently in different nodes of a distributed environment. Existing proposals and actual concurrent languages either ignore these difficulties or only cope with a limited form of them. This paper attempts a general solution, developed especially for distributed object systems, starting from a conceptual model, together with algorithms for coordinating concurrent components and resolving multiple exceptions, through to an actual system implementation. An industrial production cell is chosen as a case study to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed model and algorithms. A system that supports coordinated atomic actions and exception resolution is implemented in distributed Ada 95 and examined through several performance-related experiments.

Computing systems deliver their functionality at a certain level of performance, reliability, and security. We refer to such non-functional aspects as quality-of-service (QoS) aspects. Delivering a satisfactory level of QoS is very challenging for systems that operate in open, resource varying environments such as the Internet or corporate intranets. A system that operates in an open environment may rely on services that are deployed under the control of a different organization, and it cannot per se make assumptions about the QoS delivered by such services. Furthermore, since resources vary, a system cannot be built to operate with a fixed level of available resources. To deliver satisfactory QoS in the context of external services and varying resources, a system must be QoS aware so that it can communicate its QoS expectations to those external services, monitor actual QoS based on currently available resources, and adapt to changes in available resources. A QoS-aware system knows which level of QoS it needs from other services and which level of QoS it can provide. To build QoS-aware systems, we need a way to express QoS requirements and properties, and we need a way to communicate such expressions. In a realistic system, such expressions can become rather complex. For example, they typically contain constraints over user-defined domains where constraint satisfaction is determined relative to a user-defined ordering on the domain elements. To cope with this complexity we are developing a specification language and accompanying runtime representation for QoS expressions. This paper introduces our language but focuses on the runtime representation of QoS expressions. We show how to dynamically create new expressions at runtime and how to use comparison of expressions as a foundation for building higher-level QoS components such as QoS-based traders.

Interface-based fault injection testing (IFIT) is proposed as a technique to assess the fault tolerance of distributed object systems. IFIT uses the description of an object's interface to generate application dependent faults, A set of application independent faults is also proposed, IFIT reveals inadequacies of the fault recovery mechanisms present in the application. The application of IFIT to different distributed object systems is described.

COALA is a new language for high level design of distributed object applications. The design concepts used in COALA are those of Coordinated Atomic Actions [15], which propose a unified transactional approach to structuring complex concurrent activities and supporting error recovery. COALA integrates several formal techniques [2] in order to address verification and validation issues. This paper presents a case study of a distributed object application designed in COALA. The main contribution of this case study consists in validating the research value of the COALA language. This case study is concerned with the design of an Auction Service system. Our experiment shows that COALA is, indeed, helpful in designing the static and dynamic structure of complex concurrent systems. It offers a flexible way of dealing with the cooperation and competition of systems as well as with fault tolerance issues. This case study paper is a mandatory step before pursuing the development of COALA and considering the development of professional distributed object applications.

With the growing emphasis on distributed applications, sophisticated programming models for handling replication become important. Control replication as an issue has so far been considered in the larger context of distributed systems such as ISIS and Arjuna. We present a programming model called Shadowobjects for programming replicated services to cater to the needs of control replication in distributed object oriented systems. The Shadowobjects model provides primitives for building highly available and redundant services. Replication in Shadowobjects is encapsulated and a replica access control mechanism is provided. Messages accessing the services exported by a server object can be captured on-the-fly, and can be appropriately scheduled on the replicas. The Shadowobjects model can be used to develop applications for distributed systems.

Electronic brokerage is regarded as a core functionality in overcoming many current limitations of Internet commerce. In this paper, we describe current approaches to brokerage services, both, on the Internet and for distributed object systems and analyze how brokerage influences business models for electronic commerce. We then describe OFFER, a project that focuses on advanced models for brokerage on the Internet. We investigate a variety of brokerage services and provide a high-level specification for core components of a generic brokerage service on the Internet. The work should provide a framework to classify existing approaches and a roadmap for further research in this emerging field.
