CORBA infrastructure for distributed learning and meta-learning

A distributed component infrastructure using CORBA for distributed learning and meta-learning has been developed. This infrastructure has several advantages over traditional methods and simplifies the integration of artificial intelligence capabilities into software-controlled systems. Middleware for modem office environments and many other application areas needs to provide support for a myriad of different, highly mobile objects. At the same time, it should be able to scale to vast numbers of objects that may possibly be dispersed over a large wide-area network. The combination of flexibility and scalability requires support for object-specific solutions that is hardly addressed by current object-based systems such as CORBA. We have developed a middleware solution that seamlessly integrates traditional remote objects with physically distributed objects that can fully encapsulate their own distribution strategy. We describe how this integration takes place, and how it can be applied to existing systems such as CORBA. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Standard client-server workflow management systems have an intrinsic scalability limitation, the central server, which represents a bottleneck for large-scale applications. This server is also a single failure point that may disable the whole system. We propose a fully distributed architecture for workflow management systems. It is based on the idea that the case (an instance of the process) migrates from host to host, following a process plan, while the case activities are executed. This basic architecture is improved so that other requirements for Work-flow Management Systems, besides scalability, are also contemplated. A CORBA-based implementation of such architecture is discussed, with its limitations, advantages and project decisions described.

The current situation of telecommunications is characterised by the presence of multiple networks, each providing its own services. The original idea of a fully integrated network, which was originally introduced with ISDN and further propelled by the B-ISDN concept, seems unlikely to be realised at a complete extent. However, unification needs between different networks are present, an example being voice/data integration. Bringing together the characteristics of different networks creates a huge potential for new services, which can take advantage of strong points of individual networks in order to optimise specific service parameters;However, although network integration at transport technologies may be an idealistic assumption, the management of services traversing different networks cannot be done without considering the accurate definition of a unified service framework, taking care of harmonising, from a service designer's viewpoint, differences existing at network transport layers. In other words, if transport integration cannot be achieved, integration at service design and service management level must be pursued in order to cope with emerging and future services. Mobile Agent Technology (MAT) based on distributed Object Technology (DOT) represents a key issue in defining methodologies and framework for a unified service environment encompassing different networks. These technologies, being largely independent from the underlying network, provide the means to build and manage services in a heterogeneous environment. Furthermore, they allow an easy deployment of new components on network systems, which is a key requirement in facing the problem of providing services in a fast and efficient way in a rapidly changing environment. This paper discusses a DOT/MAT based approach to the problem of creating and managing services in a heterogeneous network environment. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Internet-based manufacturing: A review and a new infrastructure for distributed intelligent manufacturing

Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are forcing major changes in the production styles and configuration of manufacturing enterprises. Traditional centralized manufacturing systems are not able to meet these requirements. In recent years, the internet has become the worldwide information platform for the sharing of information and data. Information processing is an important challenge in an internet-based manufacturing environment, and must facilitate distribution, heterogeneity, autonomy and cooperation. This paper reviews recent trends and major developments in internet-based manufacturing. Broad categories of distributed information management are identified, based upon the development of computer integrated manufacturing, and the possible direction of future research is indicated.

Respectful type converters

In converting an object of one type to another, we expect some of the original object's behavior to remain the same and some to change. How can we state the relationship between the original object and converted object to characterize what information is preserved and what is lost after the conversion takes place? We answer this question by introducing the new relation, respects, and say that a type converter function C : A --> B respects a type T. We formally define respects in terms of the Liskov and Wing behavioral notion of subtyping;types A and B are subtypes of T. We explain in detail the applicability of respectful type converters in the context of the Typed Object Model (TOM) Conversion Service, built at Carnegie Mellon and used on a daily basis throughout the world. We also briefly discuss how our respects relation addresses a similar question in two other contexts: type evolution and interoperability.

distributed software problems are often addressed with object-oriented solutions. objects provide the benefits of encapsulation and abstraction that have proven useful in managing the complexity of sequential code. However, the management of distributed objects is typically by means of complex APIs, such as CORBA, DCOM, or Java RMI. The complexity of the APIs is itself a hurdle to the writing of efficient, robust programs. An alternate approach is to provide the programmer with a simple interface to an underlying object management layer that provides efficient access to objects and sufficient power for common distributed programming tasks. This paper describes the implementation of the Kan system. It has a clear, simple object model with powerful semantics, embodying such concepts as atomic transactions, asynchronous method calls, and multithreading, The model primitives help the programmer avoid common concurrent programming errors, allowing clean expressions of concurrent algorithms. Kan provides distributed objects (i.e. objects that can migrate or be replicated), rather than the remote objects of Java RMI, Nevertheless, Kan optimizations provide runtime object accesses that are as efficient as or more efficient than accesses made to a similar distribution control layer over Java RMI, We describe the optimizations and measure their runtime impacts. FLIE: First-Look Enabled Inspect-Explore Autonomy Toward Visual Inspection of Unknown distributed and Discontinuous Structures

In this article, the problem of an online autonomous aerial inspection, specifically for discontinuous and distributed objects is presented. The proposed approach imposes view culling and photogrammetric constraints based on a geometrically modeled three-dimensional view pyramid, a view cone to filter surfaces by desired observation angle, a framework-integrated passive collision-avoidance scheme with the object under inspection, and a dynamically enveloping bounding-box region to map the visited surfaces. Furthermore, the proposed inspect-explore framework is validated for the case of an unknown environment with no prior knowledge of the object model under inspection. The overall inspection scheme is based on the novel First-Look approach, enabling the UAV to progressively adapt its inspection path to match the profile of the structure autonomously. The implemented exploration strategy imposes a tiered policy enabling the UAV to search, identify and navigate towards the structure for inspection. The presented work utilizes a unified architecture of the aforementioned inspect-explore framework to improve situational awareness in a previously unknown environment by enabling the UAV to explore its surrounding space and identify structures to execute closer inspection tasks. Extended simulations to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed inspect-explore framework are presented with multiple structure scenarios.

Extracting Interactions in Component-Based Systems

Monitoring, analyzing, and understanding component-based enterprise software systems are challenging tasks. These tasks are essential to solving and preventing performance and quality problems. Obtaining component-level interactions that show the relationships between different software entities is a necessary prerequisite for such efforts. This paper focuses on component-based Java applications, currently widely used by the industry. They pose specific challenges while raising interesting opportunities for component-level interaction extraction tools. We present a range of representative approaches for dynamically obtaining and using component interactions. For each approach, we detail the needs it addresses and the technical requirements for building an implementation of the approach. We also take a critical look at the different available implementations of the various techniques presented. We give performance and functional considerations and contrast them against each other by outlining their relative advantages and disadvantages. Based on this data, developers and system integrators can better understand the current state of the art and the implications of choosing or implementing different dynamic interaction extraction techniques.

The Structured overlay Networks Application Platform (Snap) is a J2EE-compatible wide-area Web application deployment infrastructure. Due to its structured peer-to-peer overlay network substrate, Snap offers three benefits to wide-area Web application deployment: easy adaptation of existent J2EE applications to a scalable network, a secure and decentralized deployment environment, and transparent embedded services, such as persistence, load balancing, fault tolerance, and edge computing.
