distributed or multi-area optimal power flow (OPF) in alternating current (AC) grids is currently a subject undergoing intense study to cope with computational burdens in large-scale grids and to maintain self-control of a regional system operator. However, future power grids will most likely be hybrid grids consisting of the conventional AC transmission system combined with high voltage direct current (DC) technology. Thus, we reformulate the full AC-DC OPF problem such that it becomes separable and, therefore, accessible to distributed algorithms. Then, we show in detail two different approaches on the decomposition of a hybrid AC-DC grid. Finally, we implement an improved alternating direction of multipliers method (ADMM) as well as the most recently proposed augmented Lagrangian based alternating direction inexact Newton (ALADIN) method. Simulation results show that optimality gaps below 0.01% are reached with both decomposition approaches and algorithms for two different test systems (5-bus and 66-bus). Furthermore, convergence rates and wall clock times are reduced by around one order of magnitude from ADMM to ALADIN.

In this paper, we propose a distributed algorithm to solve the yet explored distributed optimal power flow problem with discrete control variables of large distributed power systems. The proposed algorithm consists of two distinguished features: 1) a distributed algorithm for solving continuous distributed optimal power flow to serve as a core technique in the framework of ordinal optimization (OO) strategy, and 2) implementing the OO strategy in a distributed power system to select a good enough discrete control variable solution. We have tested the proposed algorithm for several cases on the IEEE 118-bus and Tai power 244-bus systems using a 4-PC network. The test results demonstrate the validity, robustness, and excellent computational efficiency of the proposed distributed algorithm in getting a good enough feasible solution.

With the increasing use of distributed intelligent devices and the demand of separated power network managing, distributed control of a complex power system becomes more and more important in application. In a distributed power flow optimisation, the cost of the network can be optimised by coordinating the control of generators and taps in a subarea partition. In this paper, a bacterial swarming algorithm (BSA) is presented to solve an optimisation problem of distributed power flow. BSA is designed from a searching framework that combines the underlying mechanisms of bacterial chemotaxis and quorum sensing. The algorithm has been evaluated by simulation studies, which were undertaken on an IEEE 118-bus test system, in comparison with a genetic algorithm (GA) and a particle swarm optimiser (PSO).

On account of the increasing influx of distributed energy resources into modern power grids, it is essential to develop efficient distributed control and optimization algorithms capable of providing suitable solutions with access to local data alone. This paper uses a distributed optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm based on a gradient projection method, which applies to any arbitrary grid topology, to solve the OPF problem. A multi-variable linear regression method learns the network sensitivities with historical operational data. The use of a data-driven approach avoids the requirement of accurate information on line parameters and network topology. Additionally, introduced curtailment cost factors into the objective cost function encourage the usage of renewable power sources. In conclusion, we show that the solution achieved using data-driven sensitivities provides an average optimality gap of 1.8% to the centralized OPF solution with numerical test results on a modified IEEE 69 bus system.

Multi-area generation scheduling algorithm with regionally distributed optimal power flow using alternating direction method

This paper calls attention to the core issue as to the multi-area generation scheduling algorithm in interconnected electric power systems. This algorithm consists in deciding upon on/off states of generating units and their power outputs to meet the demands of customers under the consideration of operational technical constraints and transmission networks while keeping the generation cost to a minimum. In treating the mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, the generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) is applied to simply decouple a primal problem into a unit commitment (UC) master problem and inter-temporal optimal power flow (OPF) sub-problems. Most prominent in this work is that the alternating direction method (ADM) is introduced to accomplish the regional decomposition that allows efficient distributed solutions of OPF. Especially, the proposed distributed scheme whose effectiveness is clearly illustrated on a numerical example can find the most economic dispatch schedule incorporated with power transactions on a short-term basis where utilities are less inclined to pool knowledge about their systems or to telemeter measured system and cost data to the common system operator and nevertheless the gains from trade such as economy interchange are vital as well. Incremental-Oriented ADMM for distributed optimal power flow With Discrete Variables in Distribution Networks

In this paper, we present an incremental-oriented alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for distributed optimal power flow with discrete variables in distribution networks. This algorithm consists of outer-loop iterations based on the extended interior-point method (EIPM), and inner-loop iterations based on ADMM. The outer-loop EIPM iteration was used to form a regional linear correction equation with coupling relationships between neighboring areas. This enables us to use ADMM to compute the primal-dual directions in a distributed manner. This novel application of ADMM inside EIPM can be considered as an independent linear equation solver;thus, its convergence can be guaranteed. In particular, the updating of the variable increments can be expressed in a closed form, speeding up ADMM. The resulting algorithm has more attractive convergence properties compared to ADMM directly applied to mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems. The convergence analysis is also given. The test results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm converged reliably and obtained a sufficiently feasible solution.

A MPBSG technique based parallel dual-type method used for solving distributed optimal power flow problems

In this paper, we propose a method to solve the distributed optimal power flow problem and discuss the associated implementation. We have combined this method with a projected Jacobi (PJ) method and a modified parallel block scaled gradient (MPBSG) method possessing decomposition effects. With the decomposition, our method can be parallel processed and is computationally efficient. We have tested our method for distributed OPF problems on numerous power systems. As seen from the simulation results, our method achieved a dramatic speed-up ratio compared with the commercial IMSL subroutines.

Privacy-Preserving distributed optimal power flow With Partially Homomorphic Encryption

Distribution grid agents are obliged to exchange and disclose their states explicitly to neighboring regions to enable distributed optimal power flow dispatch. However, the states contain sensitive information of individual agents, such as voltage and current measurements. These measurements can be inferred by adversaries, such as other participating agents or eavesdroppers, leading to the privacy leakage problem. To address the issue, we propose a privacy-preserving distributed optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm based on partially homomorphic encryption (PHE). First of all, we exploit the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to solve the OPF in a distributed fashion. In this way, the dual update of ADMM can be encrypted by PHE. We further relax the augmented term of the primal update of ADMM with the l(1)-norm regularization. In addition, we transform the relaxed ADMM with the l(1)-norm regularization to a semidefinite program (SDP), and prove that this transformation is exact. The SDP can be solved locally with only the sign messages from neighboring agents, which preserves the privacy of the primal update. At last, we strictly prove the privacy preservation guarantee of the proposed algorithm. Numerical case studies validate the effectiveness and exactness of the proposed approach. In particular, the case studies show that the encrypted messages cannot be inferred by adversaries. Besides, the proposed algorithm obtains the solutions that are very close to the global optimum, and converges much faster compared to competing alternatives.

In this paper, we describe an approach to parallelizing optimal power flow (OPF) that is applicable to very large interconnected power systems and is suitable for distributed implementation. The objective of this paper is to find a set of control parameters with which auxiliary problem principle (algorithm-APP) can be best implemented in solving distributed OPF problems. Accelerated and Robust Analytical Target Cascading for distributed optimal power flow

Augmented Lagrangian-based distributed algorithms, such as analytical target cascading (ATC), may converge slowly, oscillate around the optimal point, or diverge if penalty multipliers are not selected appropriately or the level of importance of objective terms is not balanced. This article presents accelerated, robust ATC (AR-ATC) to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) distributedly. A function is designed to determine a balancing coefficient whose incorporation into ATC makes a balance between the important level of terms of objective functions. If penalty multipliers are initialized to large values, the proposed function creates a balancing coefficient to avoid the premature convergence or divergence. A balancing coefficient will be created to reduce the number of iterations if penalty multipliers are set to small values. Mathematical justifications and simulation studies are performed to analyze the effectiveness of AR-ATC. Potential applications of the proposed method on auxiliary problem principle, alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and Nesterov-based ADMM are also studied numerically. Simulations are performed for direct current optimal power flow and alternating current optimal power flow problems.
