We develop a new formalism for solving team Markov decision processes (MDPs), called marginal-contribution stochastic games (MCSGs). In MCSGs, each agent's utility for a state transition is given by its marginal contribution to the team value function so that utilities differ between agents, and sparse interaction between them is naturally exploited. We prove that a MCSG admits a potential function and show that the locally optimal solutions, including the global optimum, correspond to the Nash equilibria of the game. We go on to show that any Nash equilibrium of a dynamic resource allocation problem with monotone submodular resource functions in MCSG form has a price of anarchy of > 1/2. Finally, we characterize a class of distributed algorithms for MCSGs.

Local energy communities are identified as a promising approach to efficiently integrate distributed generation whereas keeping costs down for prosumers. In this context, we propose a multi-agent system to collectively optimise the energy flows of a local community of prosumers. The novelty and strength of our approach resides in the use of decentralised decision making algorithms, based on the alternating direction method of multipliers, to orchestrate the demand and supply of a large number of homes. Our preliminary results show how the proposed approach can significantly increase the self-consumption level of the community while significantly reducing the energy bills of its members.

Due to the increase of optical flow benchmark data, concerning both amount and resolution, learning parameters from training sequences with ground truth has become significantly more challenging in recent years. Moreover, optical flow methods are much more complex than a few years ago resulting in a larger amount of model parameters and a noticeably increased runtime. As a consequence, even optimising a small set of suitable parameters may take hours or even days which makes hand tuning infeasible. Hence, time-efficient strategies for automatic parameter optimisation become more and more important. In this context, our work addresses three important aspects. First, we provide an overview of different optimisation strategies and juxtapose them in the context of different optical flow methods and different evaluation benchmarks. Second, we focus on choosing a suitable subset of the training data to speed up the computation while still obtaining meaningful results. Finally, we also consider different strategies for distributing the evaluation on hardware infrastructures which allows to further reduce the run time. Experiments show that the proposed methodology allows to obtain good results while keeping the overall effort reasonably low.

This paper casts coordination of a team of robots within the framework of game theoretic learning algorithms. In particular a novel variant of fictitious play is proposed, by considering multi-model adaptive filters as a method to estimate other players' strategies. The proposed algorithm can be used as a coordination mechanism between players when they should take decisions under uncertainty. Each player chooses an action after taking into account the actions of the other players and also the uncertainty. Uncertainty can occur either in terms of noisy observations or various types of other players. In addition, in contrast to other game-theoretic and heuristic algorithms for distributed optimisation, it is not necessary to find the optimal parameters a priori. Various parameter values can be used initially as inputs to different models. Therefore, the resulting decisions will be aggregate results of all the parameter values. Simulations are used to test the performance of the proposed methodology against other game-theoretic learning algorithms.

This paper proposes an algorithm for real-time congestion management in a distribution network. It sets up a peer-to-peer market allowing the distribution system operator to inject network charges. This enables him to obtain flexibility from distributed agents with heterogeneous preferences. These network charges vary in real time and are related to the network's congestion. Prosumers minimize their cost function, and find a consensus through alternating direction method of multipliers decomposition. This formulation allows the management of the large number of agents present in the distribution networks only using one price broadcast by the distribution system operator to prosumers. We illustrate with the CIGRE low voltage test case that this strategy is efficient to manage congestion and presents limited sub-optimality compared to the optimal power flow.

This article presents a two-level optimisation approach for the management of controllable and distributed converters with storage systems across different energy sectors. It aims at the reduction of electrical peak load and at the economical optimisation of the electrical energy exchange with the grid, based on a dynamic external incentive, e.g. through dynamic energy price tariffs. By means of a secure, standardised and lean communication with two different internal price signals, an optimal flexibility provision shall be achieved. The two-level optimisation approach consists of a centralised and several distributed decentralised entities. At the centralised level, the distributed flexibilities are invoked for optimal scheduling on the basis of an internal price algorithm for stimulating the decentralised entities. Based on that internal incentive and on the expected demands for electricity, heating and cooling, the decentralised optimisation algorithms provide optimal generation schedules for the energy converters. The suggested interaction between the central and decentral entities is successfully tested and the principle potential for peak shaving and the adaption to dynamic energy-related market prices could be demonstrated and compared to different energy management strategies such as the standard heat-led operation. Further, variations of the system parameters such as load shifting potential, installed capacity and system diversification are evaluated against cost saving potential for the energy supply and overall system performance.

The problem of weighted sum-rate maximisation in a multi-cell multi-user downlink system is NP-hard and complicated to solve even for Multiple Input Single Output scheme (MISO). In this work, a low complexity suboptimal distributed algorithm is proposed for joint optimisation of beamforming and power allocation. The algorithm is based on two independent phases. In the first one, Regularised Block-Diagonalisation beam-forming is proposed (multi-stream transmission). In the second phase an approximated Dual decomposition and sub-gradient methods are used. Where the objective problem transformed into a sequence of successive convex approximations. Then, using Broadcast/Multiple access channel duality (BC/MAC), each base station computes optimal values of its local variables (virtual uplink power and beamforming) for fixed virtual noise levels (complicating variable). The Alternating-Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is used for updating the virtual noise vectors once the per base station optimisations are finished. Base station optimisations and the sub-gradient method are carried out in an iterative approach for a fixed number of iterations. Finally, power can be allocated by leveraging optimal virtual uplink Signal-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR). Numerical results prove that the process can converge to a steady-state with in limited number of iterations and the network sum rate is closed to (only 1bpsk/Hz difference at 15dB SINR) the centralised scheme performance.

Despite its many advantages, the non-controllable and intermittent nature of renewable energy sources is adding further stress to the energy networks and hence, grid operators are often forced to curtail RES generation or to limit its further penetration in the most congested areas. Smart tri-generation districts (electricity, gas, heat) can be key to mitigate these issues and increase the renewable hosting capacity of the grid, provided their feature an optimal use of their energy conversion and storage capabilities. This paper presents a district energy management approach based on Multi-Agent System (MAS) that takes into consideration the tri-energy vectors (electricity, gas, thermal). The optimization problem is solved in a distributed way based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers with the objective of minimizing district costs and preliminary results show the efficiency of our approach to achieve this objective.

In recent years, the large increase in connected devices and the data that are collected by these devices have caused a heightened interest in distributed processing. Many practical distributed networks are of heterogeneous nature, because different devices in the network can have different specifications. Because of this, it is highly desirable that algorithms operating within these networks can operate asynchronously, since in that case there is no need for clock synchronisation between the nodes, and the algorithm is not slowed down by the slowest device in the network. In this paper, we focus on the primal-dual method of multipliers (PDMM), which is a promising distributed optimisation algorithm that is suitable for distributed optimisation in heterogeneous networks. Most theoretical work that can be found in existing literature focuses on synchronous versions of PDMM. In this work, we prove the convergence of stochastic PDMM, which is a general framework that can model variations such as asynchronous PDMM and PDMM with transmission losses. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper reports preliminary work towards developing a method for incorporating distributed energy resources into frequency contingency response services. The approach involves casting the large-scale scheduling problem as a marginal contribution stochastic game, and deriving a modified fictitious play algorithm for generating a schedule of frequency service allocations. Results of simulations demonstrates the methods efficacy in scheduling many small loads so that they collectively optimise their contributions to frequency reserves for use in the case of power system emergencies.
