Simulation of hydrogen storage tank packed with metal-organic framework

Hydrogen adsorption in high surface metal-organic framework (MOF) has generated significant interest over the past decade. We studied hydrogen storage processes of MOF-5 hydrogen storage systems with adsorbents of both the MOF-5 powder (0.13 g/cm(3)) and its compacted tablet (0.30 g/cm(3)). The charge-discharge cycles of the two MOF-5 adsorbents were simulated and compared with activated carbon. The physical model is based on mass, momentum and energy conservation equations of the adsorbent-adsorbate system composed of gaseous and adsorbed hydrogen, adsorbent bed and tank wall. The adsorption process was modeled using a modified Dubinin-Astakov (D-A) adsorption isotherm and its associated variational heat of adsorption. The model was implemented by means of finite element analysis software Comsol Multiphysics (TM), and the system simulation platform Matlab/Simulink (TM). The thermal average temperature from Comsol simulation is used to fill the gap between the system model and the multi-dimensional models. The heat and mass transfer feature of the model was validated by the experiments of activated carbon, the simulated pressure and temperatures are in good agreement with the experimental results. The model was further validated by the metal-organic framework of Cu-BTC and is being extended its application to MOF-5 in this study. The maximum pressure in the powder MOF-5 tank is much higher than that in the activated carbon tank due to the lower adsorbent density of MOF-5 and resulting lower hydrogen adsorption. The maximum pressure in the compacted MOF-5 tank is a little bit lower than that in the activated carbon tank due to the higher adsorbent density and resulting higher hydrogen adsorption. The temperature swings during the charge-discharge cycle of both MOF-5 tanks are higher than that of the activated carbon tank. With development of new technologies applied to biological experiments, more and more data are generated every day. To make predictions in biological systems, mathematical modeling plays a critical role. Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) contribute to a large portion in mathematical modeling. In which parameters are inevitable. Noise is intrinsic in all experiments. Therefore, to think of parameters as statistical distributions is a realistic treatment. In this paper, we discuss in a 1st order ODE common in biological systems, how to calculate parameter distribution analytically according to the experimentally observed output assumed to be normal distribution. Conditions on when parameter can be correctly estimated are elucidated.

The "Deficit-Below-Threshold" (DBT) method is applied to characterize low flows in terms of volume, duration and intensity at 101 Canadian hydrometric stations. The volume, duration and intensity data series are fitted to six 2-parameter distributions, which are the generalized Pareto (gp), gamma, Weibull, log-logistic (llog), lognormal (lnorm), and Kappa. The goodness of fit is assessed using the sample's approximate transformation to normality followed by application of the Shapiro-Wilk goodnessof- fit (GoF) statistic. The gp, Kappa, Weibull, and gamma distributions provide the best fits to intensity, while for volume, the lnorm, llog, and Kappa distributions give the best fit. For duration, none of the 2-parameter chosen distributions is flexible enough to provide an adequate fit.

The optimal control problem for linear dynamic systems of fractional order is investigated. This problem is reduced to the classical moment problem. This paper validates the conditions making possible to formulate and resolve the obtained moment problem. Some particular cases of one- and two-dimensional fractional-order systems are discussed and the explicit solutions for the problems of optimal control were obtained. In particular, this paper studies the problem to minimize the norm of control for the assigned time interval and the problem of control with the minimal time of the object transition into the desirable state with the given limitation of the norm of control. It is also shown that the moment method may be also applied to the systems of fractional order with distributed parameters. The problem of optimal control for the transfer-type equation with a fractional derivative in time is formulated and the respective moment problem is analyzed.

Nonlinear model of hydroelectric turbine model with elastic water column in penstock consider the effects which cause travelling waves: pressure and flow due to elasticity of steel in penstock and compressibility of water. This paper proposes two nonlinear electrical analogue turbine models of hydroelectric plants, non-dissipative model and approximated model. Dynamic response of the proposed model is compared with the nonlinear travelling wave model. Frequency response analysis of approximated electrical analogue turbine model for different diameter to length ratio is studied.

A novel approach to analyze curvilinear multiconductor transmission line systems is presented. Non-uniform transmission line equations for the systems are obtained and solved by using chain matrix approach. Crosstalk and reflection due to discontinuities such as bend and changes of radii are investigated. Per-unit-length parameters for the lines are discussed as well. It is observed that the discontinuities will increase the crosstalk significantly and bending will substantially increase crosstalk at the driving end.

We investigate the target tracking problem of adapting asymmetric multi-modal sensing operation platforms using radio frequency (RF) radar and electro-optical (EO) sensors. Although the multi-modality framework allows for the integration of complementary information, there are many challenges to overcome, including targets with different energy returns, and information loss due to low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or due to dependent measurements from different sensors that are not appropriately processed. We develop the particle filter (PF) based recursive track before detect (TBD) algorithm for joint RF-EO tracking to avoid loss of information caused by matched filter thresholding at low SNR. A waveform optimization technique is integrated into the PF-TBD to allow for adaptive waveform selection. We also approximate distributions of parameters of dependent RF and EO measurements using the embedded exponential family (EEF) approach to further improve target detection and tracking performance.

To accurately locate the fault position on the EHV transmission line, the impact of distributed capacitance cannot be ignored. A novel fault location method for locating double-phase to earth faults occurred on the transmission line is presented based on the distributed parameter model of the transmission line. In this method, only the voltage and current of single end are used. The residual phase voltage at the fault point should have the same phase angle as the current through fault branch due to the pure resistive characteristics of the fault path impedance. By virtue of searching the minimum phase angle difference between the phase voltage along the transmission line and the fault-component current measured by the protection, the fault distance can be located. It should be pointed out that the algorithm is based on power-frequency voltages and currents. Therefore, it can be implemented in the existing protection devices easily. EMTDC based simulation model is used to generate the data to verify the proposed fault location algorithm. The test results are satisfactory in terms of engineering applications.
