We present an innovative approach to distributed estimation, featuring selective update of parameter estimates. In distributed parameter estimation, sensor nodes consume energy not only in processing data, but most costly, in communicating and diffusing updated parameter estimates. Reducing the number of parameters to be updated and reducing the frequency of updates are thus effective ways to save in energy consumption. The approach presented in this paper features advantages of set-membership adaptive filtering (SMAF) and those of partial updates in adaptive filtering. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm offers substantial reduction in energy consumption without much, if any, performance degradation.

In this paper, we derive the analytical impulse response of a fractional-order distributed parameter low-pass filter of the form integral(b)(a) 1/Ts alpha+1dT, where 0 <= a <= b and alpha is an element of (0, 1). The asymptotic properties of the impulse responses are obtained. Moreover, based on the derived analytical impulse response, we present a technique to perform the discretization of the above fractional-order filter. Finally, a number of illustrated figures are presented to validate the concepts.

A multiresolution method for distributed parameter estimation (or inverse problems) is studied numerically. The identification of the coefficient of an elliptic equation in one dimension is considered as our model problem. First, multiscale bases are used to analyze the degree of ill-posedness of the inverse problem. Second, based on some numerical results, it is shown that the method of scale-by-scale multiresolution yields robust and fast convergence. Finally, it is shown how the method gives a natural regularization approach which is complementary to Tikhonov's regularization.

With the increasing demand for ultra-long distance and ultra-high power transmission, half-wavelength transmission technology has attracted the attention of many experts and scholars. However, most scholars mainly focus on the steady-state operation characteristics, protection scheme and other aspects, less attention to fault location. A Single-ended Fault Location Method based on distributed parameter model is proposed in this paper. Under the distributed parameter model, the voltage and current at each point along the line can be calculated through the initial electrical quantity. Because the length of the half wavelength line is too large, a calculation point is set at a certain distance at every interval to reduce the computation. By comparing the voltage values of the calculation points along the line, the point with the smallest voltage is the point nearest to the fault point. Using the voltage and current of the point, the differential equation is constructed, and the fault location is accurately calculated by solving the equation with the least square method. RTDS simulation proves that this method is suitable for half-wavelength line, and it is not affected by fault location and fault type, and has better ranging performance.

A novel fault location algorithm based on the solution of telegraph equations by means of Projection Operator for distributed parameter transmission lines is presented. The voltage and current signals at arbitrary location on the line can be approximated in a sampling function space V-N. By means of projection operator, the voltage and current can be projected on the orthogonal bases of the space VN, as a result, the differential equations with two dimensional variables x and t, is transformed to be that with only one variable x. By solving the one-dimensional differential equation, the fault can be accurately located. The new fault location principle and algorithm are respectively proposed with the proofs of EMTP simulation tests.

A computational algorithm based on an orthogonal collocation approach is developed to simulate a BNR activated sludge process consisting of anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic zones in a back-to-back scheme. The hydraulic model employed in this study considers backmixing or intermixing, which can represent the actual process more accurately than the idealised flow schemes commonly employed for modelling and/or design of the activated sludge bioreactor. The kinetic model of the International Association on Water Quality (IAWQ) - Activated Sludge Model No. 2 (ASM No. 2) was reduced to submodels representing the anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic zones. Validation of simulated results against pilot-scale experimental data suggested that the new computational algorithm is able to predict the behaviour of components of interest reasonably well despite uncertainties with processes and parameters related to phosphorus accumulating organisms. Predicted transient properties may be gainfully employed for improvement to the operation and control of the process. (C) 1999 IAWO Published by Elsevier Science Ltd All rights reserved.

In this paper, the distributed parameter dynamical model of cooperating flexible manipulators is derived. The obtained distributed parameter model is divided into a lumped parameter subsystem and a distributed parameter subsystem via the singular perturbation method. A combined cooperative control algorithm is proposed which include a robust hybrid controller for the lumped parameter subsystem to track the desired position/force and a distributed parameter feedback controller for the distributed parameter subsystem to suppress the vibration. Stabilization analysis and numerical simulations are carried out and a significant performance is well demonstrated.

According to the transfer impedance getting from distributed parameter model,we analyse the influences of the number of turns, capacitance to the shield and interturn capacitance on the high frequency characteristic of Rogowski coil through theories and simulations. Simulation shows that there are a series of zeros in high frequency band, but on the whole, the high frequency response does not change with the increase of frequency. The number of turns and capacitance to the shield can influence the frequency at which zero appears, but the high frequency characteristic of Rogowski coil can't be influenced. Considering the interturn capacitance, the curve of high-frequency response characteristic presents a "V" shape", and this leads to the reduction of higher cut-off frequency. So we should try to decrease the interturn capacitance to reduce the influence on the high frequency characteristic.

This paper proposes a single-wire power transfer (SWPT) system using distributed parameter resonant coil. An accurate equivalent circuit is proposed by establishing the distributed parameter circuit model of the single-layer air-core solenoid coils and the single wire. The vector and amplitude distribution of spatial electric field are depicted from simulation results. Experimental results of a prototype SWPT system are presented at different distances. The system can transfer 350W with 60% efficiency at 30m, and transfer 300W with 42% efficiency at 70m.
