Commercial buildings are responsible for a significant fraction of the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. and worldwide. Consequently, the design, optimization and control of energy efficient buildings can have a tremendous impact on energy cost and greenhouse gas emission. Buildings are complex, multi-scale in time and space, multi-physics and highly uncertain dynamic systems with wide varieties of disturbances. Recent results have shown that by considering the whole building as an integrated system and applying modern estimation and control techniques to this system, one can achieve greater efficiencies than obtained by optimizing individual building components such as lighting and HVAC. We consider estimation and control for a distributed parameter model of a multi-room building. In particular, we show that distributed parameter control theory, coupled with high performance computing, can provide insight and computational algorithms for the optimal placement of sensors and actuators to maximize observability and controllability. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the approach. We also discuss the problems of design and optimization (for energy and CO2 reduction) and control (both local and supervisory) of whole buildings and demonstrate how sensitivities can be used to address these problems.

Total-variation (TV) regularization is widely adopted in image restoration problems to exploit the feature that natural images are smooth with small gradient values at most regions. Basic TV method assumes identical zero-mean Laplacian distribution for the gradients at all pixels. However, for real-world images, the statistics of gradients may not be stationary, and the zero-mean assumption of gradients may not be valid either for a specific pixel. This paper presents a non-local extension of TV regularization for image restoration, called Non-Local Gradient Sparsity Regularization (NGSR). The NGSR model employs a separate gradient value distribution for each pixel. To figure out the distribution parameters, the NGSR method exploits a set of patches which are similar to the patch centered at current pixel and estimates the distribution parameter adaptively. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed NGSR outperforms traditional TV remarkably for image restoration.

In electronic manufacturing system, the design of the robotic hand with sufficient dexterity and configuration is important for the successful accomplishment of the assembly task. It is significant that the robot can grasp assembly parts and do some simple in-hand manipulation so as to fit them with the package slots. In this research, we study the process of precise in-hand posture transition problem using a novel jaw like gripper with human-sized anthropomorphic features. We transform the in-hand manipulation problem into a series of static grasping problems. Then we study the successful twisting condition on each grasp frame by analyzing its dynamic performance and requirements. Based on this data-driven idea, simulation and experimental data is obtained from both successful and failed trials. Finally, we create the distribution of parameters grasp map for successful twisting.

The well-known frequency concept of analysis and synthesis of concentrated systems is transferred to the selected class of systems with distributed parameters. The main provisions of the frequency analysis and synthesis method for distributed systems are formulated, and specially developed distributed links are presented, from which the structure of a distributed controller is formed during the synthesis process. Since the mathematical models of many distributed objects do not have an analytical solution, the transfer functions of nonstandard approximating links used to describe the characteristics of distributed objects are given. An example of designing a distributed control system for the hydrolithosphere process is also considered.

Variability continues to pose challenges to integrated circuit design. With statistical static timing analysis and high-yield estimation methods, solutions to particular problems exist, but they do not allow a common view on performance variability including potentially correlated and non-Gaussian parameter distributions. In this paper, we present a probabilistic approach for variability modeling as an alternative: model parameters are treated as multi-dimensional random variables. Such a fully multivariate statistical description formally accounts for correlations and non-Gaussian random components. Statistical characterization and model application are introduced for standard cells and gate-level digital circuits. Example analyses of circuitry in a 28 nm industrial technology illustrate the capabilities of our modeling approach.

According to the deficiency of the prior modeling methods on main-pipeline system,the paper advances a near distributed modeling way based on subsection,combination and delamination for parallel coursing units and main-pipehne system to fully show its distributed dynamics by an easy-simulated mode of ***,a principle is established to plot out the main-pipeline into some short pipe-sections between each pair of fountain/confluent points. Secondly,a near distributed decouphng transfer function matrix model without steady error for each pipe-section is built by rationally approximate deduction and then joined with the dynamic models of the fountain/confluent at the two ends of the pipe-section to form the near distributed model of each ***,a smooth arithmetic is adopted to joint all the conterminous subsections into a whole system *** modeling method above decreases the dimension of matter space and integrates more influence factors on the systern dynamic characteristics into the built model,such as pipe length,diameter and the thermodynamics of working fluid,so it more particularly reflects the distributed dynamic characteristics of a multifountain-and-multiconfluent network system of steam main-pipeline and parallel coursing units than before,and can act well as the simulated research object for advanced main-pipeline system control arithmetic and distributed control technology or even validates *** simulation experiments have been done and produced good results to prove the validity of the modeling method.

A gaze concurrence is a point in 3D where the gaze directions of two or more people intersect. It is a strong indicator of social saliency because the attention of the participating group is focused on that point. In scenes occupied by large groups of people, multiple concurrences may occur and transition over time. In this paper, we present a method to construct a 3D social saliency field and locate multiple gaze concurrences that occur in a social scene from videos taken by head-mounted cameras. We model the gaze as a cone-shaped distribution emanating from the center of the eyes, capturing the variation of eye-in-head motion. We calibrate the parameters of this distribution by exploiting the fixed relationship between the primary gaze ray and the head-mounted camera pose. The resulting gaze model enables us to build a social saliency field in 3D. We estimate the number and 3D locations of the gaze concurrences via provably convergent mode-seeking in the social saliency field. Our algorithm is applied to reconstruct multiple gaze concurrences in several real world scenes and evaluated quantitatively against motion-captured ground truth.

This paper presents a novel methodology for statistical detection of Least Significant Bits (LSB) matching steganography. It proposes to exploit a statistical model of natural images adjacent pixels difference. In this paper, the detection problem is first addressed in a theoretical context when cover image parameters are known. The most powerful likelihood ratio test (LRT) is designed and its statistical performances are analytically expressed. Then, for a practical case of unknown image analysis, an estimation of distribution parameters is proposed to designed a test whose performance are also analytically established. Numerical results on a large image database shows the relevance of proposed methodology.

HVDC breakers, capable of interrupting DC fault currents within only a few milliseconds are currently under development. Application of such breakers allows for selective DC fault clearing which previously has limited the practical application of large-scale DC grids. However, for reliable operation of such systems, the underlying protection algorithms must be able to distinguish between different faults so that correct DC breakers are used to clear the fault. This paper introduces a longitudinal differential protection algorithm which is derived in the frequency domain from the transmission line equations. For translation into the time domain, it relies on the techniques used by the Universal Line Model, known to accurately represent the frequency dependent behavior of both cables and overhead lines. Since the protection accounts for the distributed parameters of transmission lines, it is inherently insensitive to external faults or disturbances. This allows for implementation with fast detection times, particularly desired in multi-terminal HVDC systems.

Traditional synchronous generators with rotational inertia are being replaced by low-inertia renewable energy resources (RESs) in many power grids and operational scenarios. Due to emerging market mechanisms, inherent variability of RESs, and existing control schemes, the resulting system inertia levels can not only be low but also markedly time-varying. In this paper, we investigate performance and stability of low-inertia power systems with stochastic system inertia. In particular, we consider system dynamics modeled by a linearized stochastic swing equation, where stochastic system inertia is regarded as multiplicative noise. The H_2 norm is used to quantify the performance of the system in the presence of persistent disturbances or transient faults. The performance metric can be computed by solving a generalized Lyapunov equation, which has fundamentally different characteristics from systems with only additive noise. For grids with uniform inertia and damping parameters, we derive closed-form expressions for the H_2 norm of the proposed stochastic swing equation. The analysis gives insights into how the H_2 norm of the stochastic swing equation depends on 1) network topology;2) system parameters;and 3) distribution parameters of disturbances. A mean-square stability condition is also derived. Numerical results provide additional insights for performance and stability of the stochastic swing equation.
