Based on the structure of composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL), a novel phase shifter with higher power capacity is proposed. What's more important, a new accurate equivalent circuit of the CRLH-TL element is proposed and its validity can be proved by the accordance of the theoretical and simulated results. In the present structure, switches of phase shifters are mounted on fingers of CRLH-TLs, thus the power through a single switch is only a fraction of that through the whole phase shifter. As a result, the power capacity of the present phase shifter can be greatly improved. Besides, the present phase shifter possesses other advantages such as low cost, small size and easy fabrication. Phase shifts can be achieved by changing the state of the switches. Then, a 4-bit phase shifter and is designed as examples. Finally we test the power capacity of the phase shifter, and its power capacity is higher than most of the traditional ones.

This paper presents a novel branch-line coupler which has a wide stopband characteristic with attenuation 30 dB from 4 GHz to 8 GHz using defected ground structure (JOGS). The conventional branch-line coupler suffers from the presence of spurious response at odd harmonics of the operating frequency. The proposed coupler adopts the two symmetrical dumbbell DGS under the input and output feed lines to suppress the harmonic components. To verify the proposed structure, both simulated results of the conventional and proposed branch-line coupler are presented. It demonstrates that the proposed structure has a high harmonic suppression. Moreover, it produces a much wider passband bandwidth compared with the conventional coupler design. The measured results show good agreement with the simulated results.

With the advancement in communication industries going at a rapid pace, the crucial role of EDA (electronic design automation) tools in virtually every aspect of communication circuit design, fabrication and testing is inevitable. Semiconductor scaling limits for communication devices are forcing designers to look in to novel circuit and design techniques which necessitates for greater modeling complexity and accuracy in EDA tools. In this paper we have proposed two algorithms for performance evaluation of transmission lines which to the best of our knowledge is not proposed elsewhere as per our literature survey conducted. The first is called Sequential Search based test sequence generation algorithm used for generating optimum test sequence for the circuit under test (CUT). The second is called hybrid fault based testing algorithm used for detecting both parametric and catastrophic faults which uses optimized sequence generated by the first algorithm as the input. The Figure of Merit (FOM) for the first algorithm gives the measure of all the faults for a particular test and FOM for the second algorithm gives the measure of all the tests for a particular circuit. The performance analysis of the newly proposed algorithms were done using a unit communication transmission line used as the CUT. A comparison of the proposed algorithms were done with the previous researches in the same field. The paper also gives a comparison of performance evaluation of the unit communication transmission line done using multiple EDA tools like VHDL-AMS, PSPICE & SystemC.

This paper presents an easy procedure to design left and right handed transmission lines with the help of lumped components for on-chip realizations. In this procedure, these lines are modeled with different L-C networks. It is observed that through lumped component modeling a major reduction in the total chip area can be achieved. Also with the help of these models the design of different lines with different characteristic impedance and electrical length is simplified. Certain realization examples for both left handed and right handed transmission line types for millimeter wave applications are presented.

The high voltage supply system in electrical (EV) and hybrid electrical (HEV) vehicles can lead to serious problems regarding electromagnetic compatibility. In this paper the modelling and simulation of important components of an electrical drive system is described. Several simulation approaches like field and circuit simulation had to be combined with transmission line models to get desired results. The circuit system was modelled and simulated using VHDLAMS. The link from field simulation to circuit simulation was realized with a model order reduced coupling model derived from S-parameter computations. Each component model and the total system simulation approach were verified by measurements. Special emphasis was placed on the very critical lower frequency range. The EMC behaviour of a vehicle electrical drive system can be optimized based on this modelling approach.

Engineering concepts such as input impedance of a transmission line and equivalent circuit models are shown to be simple, yet effective tools to design surface waves-like plasmons for planar guiding with subwavelength confinement. Moreover, these well-known concepts allow merging together plasmonics and metamaterials under an engineering perspective, which may bring a wide range of possibilities to alleviate limitations of each field. As a proof of principle, classical geometrically induced surface plasmons have been analysed from this prism and correlated to their dispersion diagrams. Finally, a complementary split-ring resonators-based configuration has been proposed leading to energy in- and out-of-plane confinement improved with respect to classical proposals.

Quartz shear resonators are employed widely as sensors to measure Newtonian viscosities of liquids. Perturbation of the electrical equivalent circuit parameters of the plate resonator by the fluid loading permits calculation only of the mass density - shear viscosity product. In these measurements, the resonator surface is exposed to a measurand bath whose extent greatly exceeds the penetration depth of the evanescent shear mode excited by the active element. Here we discuss the more interesting situation where the separation between the resonator and a confining wall is less than the penetration depth of the fluid occupying the intervening region. This modality allows separate and unique determinations of shear viscosity and mass density. Moreover, because evanescent shear wave penetration depth usually is nanometers to micrometers, extreme miniaturization is enabled.

A novel, simple and broadband 90° bit C-band phase shifter was proposed and fabricated by LTCC process. It is composed of an 180° transmission line and two 90° shorted transmission lines. Design equations for the proposed 90° bit phase shifter are derived by admittance parameter analyses. Based on the design equations, a broadband a 90° bit phase shifter with ±2° of phase deviation was designed and fabricated.

This paper presents a novel numerical scheme for the extraction of dielectric material parameters using the transmission line method. This method is performed by formulating the discretized Maxwell equations as an eigenpermittivity, permeability or an eigenconductivity problem of the considered sample within an arbitrary and generally inhomogeneous filled waveguide cross section. This allows the direct calculation of the desired material parameter by performing only one full wave simulation. Hence, it is very useful if simplified analytical approaches do not provide the aimed accuracy or even fail completely. This procedure will be demonstrated by applying a modified 2D Finite Differences Frequency Domain scheme to the complex permittivity simulation of arbitrary shaped and placed samples within a waveguide cross section.

In this paper a Class-A power amplifier design is described that comprises of a single transistor using artificial transmission lines. The amplifier's structure can be considered as a conventional travelling wave amplifier comprising only one transistor referred to here as a single-stage travelling wave amplifier (SSTWA). The SSTWA structure using 0.35μm SiGe process is demonstrated to provide medium power output and power-added efficiency results making the device suitable for numerous power applications in wireless microwave systems.
