Recent developments in left-handed metamaterials and left-handed transmission lines have led to new approaches to the design of radio frequency components such as branch line couplers. In this paper, the design of a delay line discriminator for instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) is investigated, where the delay line section is replaced by a composite right/left-hand (CRLH) transmission line. To demonstrate the CRLH design approach, experimental measurements and simulation results are compared for a 100 MHz delay line discriminator. The inherent phase advance of the CRLH transmission line structure is shown to reverse the slope of the frequency discriminator when compared to a right-handed transmission line structure.

This paper describes an impedance matching monitor for use with power line carrier systems on high voltage transmission lines. The purpose of the monitor is to determine when an undesirable impedance mismatch between a carrier transmitter and its load occurs, and to provide an alarm when the condition occurs. The alarm output is based on a calibrated setpoint that corresponds to some given percent reflected power level, or reflection coefficient, as opposed to an actual calculation of percent reflected power or reflection coefficient for a given impedance mismatch. That is, the system is calibrated with known impedance that results in the reflection coefficient that yields the desired percent reflected power alarm point. The monitor developed consists of two key components, which are a directional coupler and a controller. The impedance matching monitor was successfully installed on a PLC system used with a directional comparison blocking protection scheme on a 115-kV line.

Shielding failure of lightning is the key problem for safe operation of UHV transmission lines. Taking the feature of 1000KV AC double circuit transmission lines into account, the leader progression method with proper criterion was employed. The lightning shielding failure rate of top phase, middle phase and bottom phase of two different transmission line tower types were compute, in three different geography conditions. The research work is helpful for improving the lightning performance of UHV transmission lines.

An improvement in the simulation of the power lines is obtained by adding a negative capacitance in parallel with the series inductances in the π-equivalent circuit *** electric lines and cables paraments are not lumped, but distributed all over the length of the circuit. Resistances, conductances, capacitances, and inductances are all expressed in Ω/m, /m, F/m, and H/m respectively. However, upon expanding 1/Z' and Y' in terms of the dimensionless variable (γL), where L is the length of the line, one more term leads to a more elaborate equivalent circuit, with an additional negative capacitance in parallel with the Z'.In this paper I will compare the Exact model, Nominal π, and the modified π model using 1. Input Impedance Study 2. Input to Output Voltage Ratio including two case studies 3. Output Voltage Transient Response.

In this paper, we present a compact CMOS chip antenna for on-chip radios. The proposed antenna is constructed by single unit-cell of composite right/left-handed transmission line. According to the zeroth-order resonance, the antenna size is determined by the equivalent lumped circuit elements instead of the wavelength, leading to the beneficial size reduction. The antenna is fabricated using 0.35-μm CMOS-MEMS technology with partial substrate removal for gain enhancement. The antenna size is 0.74 × 0.32 mm 2 , and the overall chip size is 1.18 × 0.74 mm 2 with dummy metals. The measured return loss is 6 dB at 40 GHz and the measured radiation gain estimated by Friis' transmission formula is -16.75 dBi.

Systematic mixed even- and odd-mode modeling for analyzing parallel tightly coupled transmission lines is presented. This coupled line model is composed of even- and odd-mode equivalent lines. And, the numerical approach is based on the modified central difference (MCD) method. The voltage and current waves propagating along the parallel tightly coupled transmission lines are monitored by the time domain analysis method. For verification of the proposed modeling, a five-section 3-dB parallel coupled line is demonstrated dynamically. In addition, the S-parameters obtained from the pulse responses are compared with those of the commercial simulator.

Input impedances of low-loss transmission line resonators are generally expressed in terms of transcendental functions. Poles and zeros of the resonators are not explicitly shown in these expressions. Minimax polynomials have been reported to accurately approximate some transcendental functions. In this paper, a minimax polynomial is used to approximate the input impedance expression of transmission line resonators. The approximate formula is used to find poles and zeros in the frequency range of interest. A numerical example shows that the input impedance calculated by the approximate formula agrees very well with that of the exact one.

In this paper, a new structure of isolation circuit of an impedance-transforming 3-dB compact balun is proposed for perfect matching at all ports and perfect isolation. This isolation circuit is composed of very small length of transmission-line sections and lumped elements, with which a compact balun can be constructed together with a set of coupled-transmission line sections. A microstrip compact balun to transform 50 Ω into 40 Ω at a center frequency of 1.5 GHz was designed and measured. The measured results show almost perfect matching at each port, power division with 180° out of phase and perfect isolation between two output ports around 1.5 GHz.

This paper presents a compact passive model of multiconductor transmission lines (MTLs) with frequency-dependent parameters. The development of this model is based on the generalized equivalent circuit model of MTLs where the original frequencydependent RLCG parameters are transformed into frequency-independent ones. This model can be easily embedded into the discrete transmission line model based on compact finite difference scheme, and the precise time-step integration method is used to solve them in tbe transient analysis. In addition, since the passivity of the compact model is preserved, it is also compatible with the passive model order reduction algorithm. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate tbe validity and accuracy of the model.

Various studies have showed that about 70 to 90% of single line to ground faults occurred on High voltage transmission lines have transient nature. This type of faults is cleared by temporary outage (by the single phase auto-reclosure). The interval between opening and reclosing of the faulted phase circuit breakers is named "Dead Time" that is varying about several hundred milliseconds. For adjustment of traditional single phase auto-reclosures that usually are not intelligent, it is necessary to calculate the dead time in the off-line condition precisely. If the dead time used in adjustment of single phase auto-reclosure is less than the real dead time, the reclosing of circuit breakers threats the power systems seriously. So in this paper a novel approach for precise calculation of dead time in power transmission lines based on the network equivalencing in time domain is presented. This approach has extremely higher precision in comparison with the traditional method based on Thevenin equivalent circuit. For comparison between the proposed approach in this paper and the traditional method, a comprehensive simulation by EMTPATP is performed on an extensive power network.
