Shielded coplanar waveguides (S-CPW) are promising candidates for the development of high-quality factor transmission lines in millimetre-wave frequency bands, from about 10 GHz to more than 65 GHz. In this paper, state-of-the art experimental results carried out on a CMOS 0.35 mum low-cost technology are first presented. These results open new possibilities for the development of low-loss compact passive circuits. Then, an accurate and simple modeling approach, based on the simulation of classical and grounded CPW transmission lines, is carried out in order to minimize the simulation time and computer memory need. Thus, very fast design procedures are obtained. Lastly, the size reduction of shielded CPW is addressed. It is demonstrated that shielded S-CPW structure leads to a chip area, for a same electrical length, divided by 2 compared to classical microstrip or CPW transmission lines.

A novel coupled-line forward coupler using composite right-/left-handed transmission lines (CRLH TLs) is presented. Enhanced forward coupling is achieved with the coupled CRLH TLs which have a considerable difference of effective phase constants in the even/odd modes. A circuit model and a microstrip implementation of the proposed CRLH forward coupler are described. The 10-dB forward coupler is simulated and experimentally demonstrated in the S-band. Its coupled-line length is significantly reduced to half of the conventional right-handed forward coupler with the same coupling. The experimental results correspond with the simulated results.

This paper proposes a new scheme for realizing a compact 3-D 90° hybrid coupler based on the compact meandered thin-film microstrip (TFMS) transmission line and shielded stripline, and successfully demonstrates it by using the multi-layer 0.35 μm SiGe HBT Jazz process. The proposed coupler takes advantage of the multi-level metallization processes offered in SiGe technology. The intrinsic area of the fabricated 3D hybrid coupler is significantly reduced and has shown a size reduction of 95% in circuit area at 20 GHz compared to that of a conventional hybrid coupler using the TFMS configuration. Experimental results are presented in support of the novel 3D compact coupler.

This paper presents the results in frequency tuning of a ferrite supported resonating CPW antenna based on CRLH (composite right/left-handed) transmission lines. The tuning is obtained by magnetically polarizing the ferrite substrate with a magnetic biasing field variable between 0 T and 0.26 T. Data obtained by simulation with a suitable microwave software indicate a frequency shift of 530 MHz at a working frequency 12.88 GHz, in very good agreement with the experimental results showing a frequency shift of 450 MHz.

A new method of bandpass filter design is proposed by using the CRLH transmission line theory. The method starts from the dispersion diagram of CRLH transmission line and is based on the negative first order and zero order resonance modes of an unbalanced CRLH transmission line. The relationship between the new method and conventional coupling, method of filter design is discussed. By using the new method, a two-order mushroom filter is designed, fabricated and tested in this paper. The filter achieves a small size and a wide-stopband.

This paper proposes a compact lumped rat-race coupler configuration. Combining the advantages of lumped elements - low spurious problem and predictable response - with multilayer low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology, circuit layouts can be integrated vertically to realize a miniaturized rat-race coupler. The proposed coupler uses high-pass and low-pass lumped models to replace the transmission line sections of the conventional design. A new structure with enhanced bandwidth is achieved by increasing the order of the 270° transmission line section. Measurement results are shown to validate the design and theoretical prediction, demonstrating 98.63% area reduction compared to conventional rat-race coupler and a 50% fractional bandwidth.

Oscillator schematics which used single transistor circuit is proposed and design based on negative resistance concept. Symbolic input and output impedance of the propose schematic are derived. Even-though, its input and output resistance is not negative, the adaptive impedance matching network will be proposed to make input and output impedance of any circuits to have negative resistance.

The purpose of this study is to develop a method to measure transmission line parameters for protection relay setting. For relaying schemes such as distance relays, current differential relays and fault locators, it is very useful to ascertain the precise setting values in service, without the need for setting calculations prior to installation, and also for the relays to be able to adaptively change their settings as the system configuration changes. This paper describes a method of untransposed live line measurement of the parameters of a three phase transmission line. We propose a mathematical approach using synchronous voltages and line currents at both ends of the line in different states, where two models, the equivalent PI circuit and distributed constant circuit, are employed. The efficiency and issues are shown using several simulation examples in MATLAB.

Application of Wavelet Transform to locate the fault in a transmission line is well known. In this paper a comparative study of locating different kind of faults, namely arc, open circuit, short circuit and high impedance faults on different transmission line models is presented. Effect of lossy ground condition with various soil resistivities on frequency dependent line models is also investigated. Simulation on a 400-kV power transmission system is carried out using ATP/EMTP. The current signals measured at both ends of system are utilized for the study. Wavelet Toolbox in MATLAB is used for obtaining Wavelet Transform coefficients. It is expected that understanding the behavior of the various transmission line models will help researchers to choose a right one for their study.

A double-sided wave absorber with specified reflection and transmission coefficients at both sides is proposed. This wave absorber consists of two transparent dielectric layers with three transparent resistance films. Therefore, this wave absorber is transparent and electromagnetic waves are absorbed in both sides. Then it is suitable for the indoor use as electromagnetic wave separator. The design formula is derived and its effectiveness is confirmed by the numerical examples.
