This paper presents a flexible Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS)/High Impedance Surface (HIS) structure for wearable communication systems. When designed using flexible electro-textiles for radiating elements and fabric dielectric substrates periodic electromagnetic structures may offer performance advantages in wearable antenna design. The traditional printed circuit etching technique has been used on electro-textiles to design HIS structure showing electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) behaviour. The existence of an EBG is experimentally verified from 10 to 12GHz by a transmission line technique. The design frequency can be used for satellite communication applications.

This paper presents an optimum distributed microstrip structure highpass filter having a cutoff frequency 1.3 GHz. The distributed elements used for this design are such as commensurate (equal electrical length) transmission line elements. The proposed design consists of shorted circuited stub microstrip transmission lines on a commercial substrate (RT/D 5880) with a relative dielectric constant 2.2 and 1.57 mm thickness. This filter exhibits a highpass band with steep cutoff. A sample filter is designed based upon the theory presented and it has been simulated with the S-parameters and IE3D software. Advanced computer aided design tools and a high precision thin film process make such filters predictable and repeatable. These filters have less radiation, dispersion and sensitivity to nearby objects.

Chip-to-chip and intra-chip wireless communication via integrated on-chip antennas has the potential to overcome the limitations of broad-band signal transmission on or between monolithic integrated circuits. In this work the use of same chip area for antenna patches and circuits is investigated. This has been accomplished by using antenna patch areas also as ground planes for the electronic circuits. Interference between circuit and antenna signals can be minimised by exciting the circuit interconnects in transmission line modes and the antennas in antenna modes. Examples for possible realisations of such structures are given and their electromagnetic properties are modelled numerically.

In this paper we present a novel algorithm for optimizing the use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) in power distribution systems. The wide and effective environmental and energy saving benefits of using CFLs will not be obtained unless a comprehensive pattern is developed for replacing them with the traditional incandescent lamps. This pattern mitigates the power factor and harmonic distortion concerns of using CFLs to a high degree. A model of distribution system is developed as a combination of several loads and transmission lines. CFL and other electronic switching devices are modeled as sources of harmonic distortion and used along with other home and business applications in order to generate models for units of consumers. Models of CFLs are obtained via the simulation of the CFL ballast circuit, as well as experimental measurements. Different arrangements of various consumers are studied and changes in the quality characteristics of the supply network are analyzed based on consumer behavior. The algorithm is then developed, which finds the optimal pattern for improving power quality and avoiding harmful effects on important devices such as transformers, fuses and relays.

A planar four-port double-ring crossover junction with arbitrary diagonal port impedances is designed and realized. The circuit consists of two concentric rings connected with four transmission line sections. It allows the two pairs of diagonal ports of the junction to have different characteristic impedances. Based on the transmission-line theory, design equations are formulated and design curves are provided. Two microstrip circuits are realized to validate the idea. One operates at 2.45 GHz and the other at 5.2 GHz. Both circuits have excellent performance such as good return loss and isolation. The measured total power loss is less than 4.8%. The measured results agree very well with simulation counterparts.

In this work, a 59 GHz push-push VCO is based on a new output circuit concept to simultaneously achieve both wide tuning range and high output power. It achieves a wide frequency tuning range of 13.9 GHz, high output power of 1.2 dBm, and low phase noise of-108 dBc/Hzat 1 MHz offset frequency. To the authors' knowledge, its figure of merit (FOM T ) of -189.6 dB is the best for silicon-based 50 GHz class VCOs.

The paper presents two types of 122 GHz low-noise-amplifiers (LNA) fabricated in SiGe BiCMOS technology. The amplifier design takes advantage of a novel transmission line structure with thick metal ground-shield on top of the MMIC. The circuit is a two-stage cascode topology utilizing transmission lines for input, output and inter-stage matching. The amplifiers are designed for high gain, minimum noise figure and low power consumption. Measurements show a gain of 13.5 dB and a noise figure of 9.6 dB at 122 GHz. The power consumption is 52 mW from a 3.5 Volt supply. The other version of the LNA with transformer coupling to the output instead of capacitive coupling has slightly lower gain. The amplifier is intended for the use in ISM-band radar and communication systems, wide-band communication systems and in radar imaging systems.

Guidelines for distributing a buck converter rectifier for application to three-dimensional (3-D) circuits is described. The 3-D rectifier exploits the properties of transmission lines to generate and distribute power supplies to different planes. As compared to a conventional rectifier, the proposed rectifier circuit only requires moderately size capacitors without the use of onchip inductors. A case study in a 0.18 mum CMOS 3-D technology demonstrates the generation of a 1.2 volt power supply delivering 700 mA peak current.
