Recent advances in three dimensional metal micromachining processes provide new opportunities for millimeter-wave circuit fabrication. Using these processes, enclosed transmission lines can operate to frequencies over 200 GHz, have very low crosstalk, and be routed arbitrarily. These processes also allow the integration of resonators with quality factors in excess of 500 allowing low loss filters to be fabricated at the same time as the transmission lines. Finally, the precision of the processes allows the design and realization of passive components such as cross-overs and couplers. The further development of these processes will enable highly integrated millimeter-wave systems.

Based on microwave C-sections, rat-race coupler is designed to have a dual-band characteristic and a miniaturized area. The C-section together with two transmission line sections attached to both of its ends is synthesized to realize a phase change of 90deg at the first frequency, and 270deg at the second passband. The equivalence is established by the transmission line theory, and transcendental equations are derived to determine its structure parameters. Two circuits are realized in this presentation; one is designed at 2.45/5.2 GHz and the other at 2.45/5.8 GHz. The latter circuit occupies only 31% of the area of a conventional hybrid ring at the first band. It is believed that this circuit has the best size reduction for microstrip dual-band rat-race couplers in open literature. The measured results show good agreement with simulation responses.

Heavily loaded condition may lead to power system instability either due to sudden increase in load or tripping of adjacent transmission line. When load increases, the apparent impedance decreases accordingly depending on the nature of load, similar instances can be observed during short circuit event. In addition, the system may also experience voltage instability originating from high power flow through the transmission line during fault and line outage condition. Hence, the ability for the system to quickly indicate possible voltage instability via fast voltage indicator is important in mitigating voltage instability from being further aggravated. Undesirable disconnection of transmission lines should also be avoided during voltage instability, while load encroachment possibilities into protective zone may cause unnecessary line isolation, which would result in cascading tripping. This paper presents the correlation between the apparent impedance calculated from different contingency scenario and the derived voltage indicator applied to the IEEE 30 Bus Test System.

We fabricated a newly designed 12-channel optical transmitter has a butt coupling possibility. An organic FR4 printed circuit board (PCB) was used as a substrate for integrating a 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) array with an electrical driver integrated circuit (IC). The substrate whose dimensions are 6.0 mm x 6.0 mm x 0.5 mm serves as a packaging platform which can provide the advantages of shorter signal routing, smaller size, and so on. Since the VCSEL array is attached on the sidewall of an organic substrate, this structure is the direct coupling-capable that has high optical coupling efficiency, which doesn't require 45deg mirror and lens. This simple structure reduces the complexity of implementation and the cost. To analyze microwave characteristics of the optical transmitter, we have designed electrical transmission line from a driver IC to a VCSEL array. The circuit simulation was accomplished with the CST microwave studio, which uses the method of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm for full wave electromagnetic characteristics. Through the simulation of the quasi-CPW line structure optimization, this transmission line is proved to be applicable to high frequency signal transmission. Simulation of temperature distribution in the embedded VCSEL array and driver IC modules was also achieved. The optical transmitter has been characterized using optical coupling into multimode fiber array. This transmitter showed a clear eye diagram of 5Gbps optical transmission.

Adopting plusmn500 kV HVDC double circuit transmission lines to transmit power can both economize line corridor and add unit corridor aera transmission capacity, so plusmn500 kV HVDC double circuit transmission lines are more and more adopted. Because the length of double circuit transmission lines is high, it is more likely to be attacked by lightning stroke, so lightning performance for double circuit transmission lines is studied in this paper. Applying ATP can calculate backflashover withstand level when the datas like tower height, polarity configuration modes, soil resistivity and grounding resistance are changed. In the calculation, the insulators' behavior is judged by comparing the insulators' volt-time curves to the overvoltage, the system voltage and the induced voltage's influence on lightning withstanding level is considered.

Most of current mobile communication terminals are installed with multiple radio circuits and choose one of them to operate in an assigned frequency band. In order to make more efficient use of frequency spectrum and to reduce RF circuits of the future mobile terminals, reconfigurable RF circuits will be necessary that can adapt to many frequency bands. This paper proposes a new multi-bit reconfigurable resonator that can change its resonant frequency among 2 N values with N RF switches and a tapped transmission line. As the simplest case, two-bit reconfigurable resonators employing λ/2 resonant mode and λ/4 resonant mode are examined in detail. Their frequency characteristics are analyzed including the loss of the RF MEMS switches by circuit simulation. A preliminary prototype using a micro strip line on a high dielectric substrate has been fabricated and evaluated for a two-bit λ/4 mode resonator. The resonators can be cascaded to form a reconfigurable low-loss bandpass filter.

Pulse generation from charged transmission lines or other charged sources are well known, however such circuits are not reverse matched. This work identifies a method of constructing different types of pulse generators, while inserting a constant 2/1 voltage ratio loss includes complete absorption of energy reflected back into them. Some measurement systems require that reflections from a load of variable impedance be absorbed. By inserting a Zr resistor in series with source and a parallel shunt circuit composed of elements complimentary to those charged, which has the same Zr series resistor. This circuit reverses the reflection absorption method introduced by Bode in 1945 with complete absorption and a fixed 2/1 voltage attenuation. Reflections for dynamic impedance loads which vary during the pulse are absorbed.

Summary form only *** transmission lines have been demonstrated to be an effective technique for generating high power ultrawideband or mesoband radiation without the need for a vacuum system, electron beam, or magnet. Preliminary experiments have been performed at AFRL and UM on a discrete element nonlinear transmission line with nonlinear capacitance. Depending on the injected pulse, either pulse sharpening or RF generation could be observed. Time frequency analysis has been applied to analyze the generated RF spectrum. These effects were reproduced in circuit simulations. Results from these preliminary experiments and plans for future high power nonlinear transmission line experiments using LTD technology at UM will be presented.

In this letter, we present a compact, tunable delay line based on left-handed nonlinear transmission line (LH NLTL). The widely tunable range of the large group delay is achieved by controlling a reverse bias voltage of series varactors in the LH NLTL. The proposed tunable delay line can be made in a very compact form since its size is dominated by the cascaded varactors. Our experiment shows that the fabricated prototype exhibits tunable group delay between 1.2 ns and 2.2 ns at a frequency of 1.42 GHz with good return loss. The circuit size is merely 1.6 cm in length.
