An accurate fault classification algorithm for double end fed parallel transmission lines based on application of artificial neural networks is presented in this paper. The proposed method uses the voltage and current available at only the local end of line. This method is virtually independent of the effects of remote end infeed and is insensitive to the variation of fault inception angle and fault location. The Simulation results show that phase-to-phase faults can be correctly detected, classified and located within one cycle after the inception of fault. Large number of faults simulations using MATLAB ® 7.01 have demonstrated the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The proposed scheme allows the protection engineers to increase the reach setting i.e. greater portion of line length can be protected as compared to conventional techniques. The technique neither requires a communication link to retrieve the remote end data nor zero sequence current compensation for healthy phases.

In this paper, a novel broadband impedance transformer combining with a symmetric coupled microstrip line and an interconnecting line is presented. It has been proved that a fractional bandwidth of about 90% at -20 dB reflection level can be achieved with this structure, and the insert loss is less than 2 dB in the matching bandwidth. The measurement results of actual circuit are well agreed with the simulation. Its bandwidth is 2.5 times larger as compared with the traditional quarter-wavelength impedance transformer, and its length is less than half of the traditional one with the help of bending the structure.

Sharing of common corridors between power lines, pipelines and telecommunication lines is becoming a familiar scene. High levels of voltages can be induced in services which run in parallel or in close vicinity of high voltage AC transmission lines, in particular during a fault on the transmission line. These hazardous voltages can affect people coming into contact with exposed metallic objects under the influence of induced voltages. This may also harm components associated with the telecommunication or pipeline assets such as cathodic protection system. This paper investigates the effects of HVAC transmission lines on metallic objects that run parallel or in the vicinity of a power line such as gas pipelines and telecommunication lines. The study is performed on the 132 kV double circuit transmission line that has been recently installed to connect Pinjar to Wanneroo substations in Western Australia. The system under consideration was modelled and field measurements were obtained to help co-ordinate a safe working environment for personnel which may come into contact during a single phase to earth fault. Simulation and field measurements show that the Telstra infrastructure is not affected by low frequency induction (LFI) or earth potential rise (EPR). However, the LFI voltage level on some sections of the gas pipelines is found to be above the acceptable voltage limits set out by AS/NZ4853. This will require an extensive mitigation work to reduce pipeline induced voltages during an earth fault.

HVDC power transmission employing power electronic device provides a wide range of control in power transmission. Remote generators are sometimes used to supply power to infinite bus through a single circuit long AC transmission line. The system may loose stability after the clearance of a fault if the pre-fault power transfer or the fault clearance time is high. Simultaneous AC-DC power transfer through the transmission line may be used for power flow enhancement. It needs conversion of the line for simultaneous AC-DC power flow to keep the system stable with high values of pre fault power and fault clearance time. During the transient period after the clearance of the fault, AC power supply is kept off and the dc power flow is increased to produce a retarding torque to bring back the generator to its normal speed. HVDC current regulator having very fast control facility may be employed for this purpose. AC circuit breakers are then switched on and the AC power flow is resumed at its pre fault value without any oscillation. The power swing is low and the system is optimally damped at the end of first swing. If the augmentation facility of HVDC power controller is limited, proper governor control of remote generators may be used to reduce the total power flow and to maintain the dc power flow only. After the system becomes stable the AC power supply is switched-on and the power oscillation is minimized with HVDC power controller.

The aim of this paper is to present results obtained with magnetically tuned Composite Right/Left Handed Coplanar Waveguide (CRLH CPW) zeroth-order resonating antenna on ferrite substrate. The CRLH structure consists of series connected CPW interdigital capacitors and parallel connected CPW transmission lines. The experiments demonstrate an antennas frequency tuning of approximately 450 MHz as a result of the variation of a magnetic biasing field between 0 T and 0.26 T.

This paper presents a compact Ka-band monolithic branch-line coupler using synthetic transmission line (TL). The prototype, which is fabricated by the standard 0.18-¿m 1P6M CMOS technology, shows the circuit size of 300.0 ¿m × 360.0 ¿m (1.48 × 10 -3 ¿ 0 2 ) without contact pads, achieving 95.1% size reduction. The measured results show the excellent agreements with those of the simulations. The measured insertion loss is 4.9 dB and the return loss is kept higher than 10.0 dB from 28.8 GHz to 39.1 GHz. The isolation of the coupler is higher than 15.0 dB and has a maximum value of 23.0 dB at 37.0 GHz. The measured frequency range of phase difference (90 0 ± 10 0 ) between two output ports is 4.5 GHz from 31.1 GHz to 35.6 GHz.

This paper introduces an accurate FDTD-based method for analysis of time domain response of frequency-dependent lossy transmission lines driven by CMOS gates. MOS transistors are modeled as the nonlinear alpha-power law model that includes the carriers' velocity saturation effect of short-channel devices. The dynamic behavior of CMOS gates during switching is defined in seven operation regions. Skin effects of lossy transmission line are included in the proposed method and analyzed with FDTD. The proposed method is accurate by comparison between the numerical results of the proposed method and the simulation results of SPICE.

In this paper, the mode analysis method has been proposed and model the precise FEXT waveform. Using this method, FEXT saturation phenomenon can be explained and the precise FEXT equations are proposed depending on the relationship between the velocity difference of even- and odd-mode and the initial rising time of the input step pulse. Saturated FEXT level with increased duration were verified by the crosstalk simulation in two coupled microstrip-type transmission lines. The modeled FEXT and TDT waveforms by the mode analysis method show a good correlation with the measured waveforms.

Interaction between cable harness structures and antennas is simulated by means of combination of two methods: multi-transmission line (MTL) based Lumped Circuit Transmission Line (LCTL) method and Method of Moments (MoM). Simulation is validated by comparison with measurements. Proposed methodology can be applied to prediction of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characteristics of complex antenna-harness systems.
