Recent developments in relay protective schemes, using metallic pilot channels for isolating a transmission line during fault conditions, reduce considerably the magnitude of the currents which must be handled. Schemes recently developed have many other advantages over the older pilot wire schemes, being more economical to install and operate, and having excellent reliability. In addition to the advantages inherent in all pilot schemes, such as high speed tripping and absolute selectivity, the latest schemes provide indication of the condition of the pilot wire circuit at all times. In this paper, we consider some nonlinear phenomena such as "self-oscillation," "synchronization," and "asynchronous quenching" in a distributed system. The system consists of a lossless transmission line terminated with a tunnel diode and a lumped parallel capacitance on one end. Such a system is governed by a partial differential equation (wave equation) and nonlinear boundary conditions. By introducing the d'Alembert solution of the wave equation, the equation describing the system is reduced to a nonlinear differential-difference equation. We have made a theoretical analysis of the above system following a nonlinear technique and obtained some interesting results. Also, we present examples of waveforms of self-oscillation obtained by computation and experiment, and show some experimental results which are in good agreement with the theoretical results.

A reading aid for the blind has been constructed that generates a tactile image of ordinary printing by using a rectangular array of vibratory pins. Reading material is focused on an array of phototransistors. These individually gate ON or OFF corresponding vibratory piezoelectric reeds that present the tactile image. A first model is described that verifies the unambiguous readability of typed material, but at a slow rate. It demonstrates as well the practicability of implementation of the reading aid using silicon phototransistors and integrated circuits.
