A novel circuit arrangement that supplies a large current to a circuit breaker under test and then subjects the open terminals to a high recovery voltage has been used in testing the 2,500,000-kva 287.5-kv impulse oil circuit breakers built for the Boulder Dam-Los Angeles transmission line. A description of this arrangement, which makes available several times the apparent power of the testing apparatus, is given in this paper, together with oscillograms which show details of the arc extinction process not previously known, and the results of a study of voltage distribution. This paper describes the approaches used and some of the results obtained building integrated mixers in S band. These mixers are built with a unique "bilithic" Schottky-barrier diode chip and evaporated microstrip circuitry on alumina dielectric. Mixer noise figures are less than 7.5 db with local oscillator powers of \approx 3 to 30 mw. The impedances are 50 \Omega in and out with the signal input VSWR being less than 1.5/1 over the local oscillator range and a bandwidth of \pm 15 %.

A novel design criterion for the lumped element coaxial transmission line directional coupler is discussed for HF band operation (2 to 30 MHz). This technique utilizes the inherent self-compensating low-pass equalizing characteristic of a high reactance secondary transformer winding. The sectoral horn is analyzed from the engineering viewpoint in such a manner as to make it feasible to consider it as one component of an over-all microwave transmission system. Equivalent network functions are derived and graphed which are based on the consideration of the sectoral horn as a nonuniform transmission line. The resulting curves should be useful to those designing systems containing sectoral-horn components. The physical significance of the derived normalized functions is discussed, and the applicability of network philosophy is pointed out.
