A sensitive and convenient method for balancing hydroelectric units under operating conditions is described. This method uses electric strain gage equipment to obtain the amplitude and phase angle of the unbalance effects. The method includes trial runs with known amounts of unbalance added, and the analysis of the unbalance signals by a combined graphical and analytical procedure to determine the required balance corrections. Simple and composite lines have been defined for nonuniform transmission lines and their various configurations considered. The concept of duality has been extended to composite lines and their different configurations, and two theorems concerning these lines have been established. A procedure for realizing certain classes of irrational functions as driving-point functions has been presented using simple or composite RC lines and their duals. This includes the existing procedures for uniform and exponential lines.

Microstrip IMPATT oscillators have been built at X-band and V-band in order to obtain hybrid integrated power sources for locked amplifier applications. It is shown that using a microstrip circuit shorter than a half-wavelength gives the highest locking figure of merit and therefore the largest possible locking range for a given gain. A figure of merit of 0.10 has been obtained for a locking gain of 20 dB.

Current from the Conowingo plant is carried fifty-eight miles to the Plymouth Meeting Substation of the Philadelphia Electric Company over two 220-kv. single-circuit steel-tower transmission lines. These lines are carried on a right-of-way which provides space for a third future line. The conductors are 795,000-cir. mil steel-reinforced aluminum. Each circuit is shielded by two 183,600-cir. mil aluminum steel-reinforced ground wires. The insulator strings consist of 14 high-strength units in suspension position and 16 units in strain position. Conductors and ground wires are carried in a new type of slip clamp in order to decrease the unbalanced longitudinal stresses on the towers in the event of wire breakage. In general, foundations are of the earth grillage type. The tower design includes a number of novel features, among them the use of combination extensions to meet flexibly the varying topographical conditions, and the narrow waist immediately below the basket.
