The Steady-State Characteristics of Nonuniform RC distributed Networks and Lossless Lines

To facilitate the comparison of the steady-state characteristics of different nonuniform lossless lines and RC distributed networks, respectively, two auxiliary functions are introduced. The method is exact insofar as no approximations other than those inherent in the classical telegraphist's equations are made. Several pairs of these functions together with the corresponding series and shunt impedances per unit length Z(x) and Y(x), describing nonuniform structures not reported so far, are deduced and these are tabulated along with those representing the well-known exponential, Bessel, and other structures. The technique is applicable to either RC distributed networks or lossless lines, and its use is illustrated by the example of a composite nonuniform matching section having characteristics similar to those of a Gaussian line. © 1965, IEEE. These have obtained experimental surge data on modern high-voltage transmission lines and configurations using modern circuit breakers with Various means of switching surge control. Calculation of Inductance and Current Distribution in Low-Voltage Connections to Electric Furnaces

The special nature of the low-voltage circuit to electric furnaces is emphasized. The conductors employed vary in arrangement and cross section, and are relatively short. The very large currents carried give rise to reactive drops of greater magnitude than is usually supposed. For these reasons a detailed study of the inductance of such circuits is desirable. Fundamental theorems for deriving geometrical mean distances are first stated, leading to the well-known formulas for self- and mutual-inductance of circular and rectangular sections. Practical applications of these formulas to the problem of calculating the approximate reactive drop in three-phase arc furnace circuits are worked up in great detail. The same calculations can be used to determine the approximate operating power factor of the furnace. Unequal current distribution in multiple conductors, due to proximity and skin effects is discussed. © 1932. By A. I. E. E.

A Wide-Band UHF Traveling-Wave Variable Reactance Amplifier

The techniques developed for designing periodically loaded traveling-wave parametric amplifiers using variable-reactance diodes are described in detail. An amplifier was built and tested with two different sets of eight diodes. The performance of the amplifier with each set of diodes agrees substantially with the theoretical predictions, the measured noise figures being about 1.2 db higher than the theoretical values in each case. The gain of the second amplifier varied from a minimum of 6.7 db to more than 13 db over the band from 550 to 930 mc, with a measured noise figure of 2.3 db for wideband noise inputs in the middle of the band, corresponding to about 4.9 db for single-frequency inputs. The Impedance of a Wire Grid Parallel to a Dielectric Interface

Analysis is given for the problem of reflection of a plane wave at oblique incidence on a wire grid which is parallel to a plane interface between two homogeneous dielectrics. It is assumed that the wire grid is a periodic structure and consists of thin cylindrical wires of homogeneous material. The equivalent circuit is derived where it is shown that the space on either side of the interface can be represented by a transmission line, and the grid itself is represented by a pure shunt element across one of the lines.
