Several transmission line transformers are described which have bandwidth ratios as high as 20,000:1 in the frequency range of a few tens of kilocycles to over a thousand megacycles. Experimental data are presented on both transformers and hybrid circuits. Typical applications are: interstage transformers for broad-band amplifiers; baluns for driving balanced antennas and broad-band oscilloscopes; and hybrids for use in pulse reflectometers, balanced modulators, etc. These transformers can be made quite small. Excellent transformers have been made using ferrite toroids having an outside diameter of 0.080 inch.

Public utilities having to do with supplying electric power are continually finding themselves confronted with problems a little different from anything in the past. New interconnections of superpower plants and transmission lines often present involved metering installations. The installation described herein has to do generally with such a condition and, specifically, has to provide for metering the simultaneous composite demand of an ultimate installation of 48 separate feeder circuits. It is believed that this is the largest installation of its kind so far attempted. The importance of this particular job required a very exacting study of all factors and the operating results, to date, seem to bear out the solution. A novel scheme has been incorporated in the daily routine of handling the demand meter tapes. A general description of this is given. A few details of the physical installation are cited, which show the extreme care used through the whole installation. This paper describes the initial step in the development of a line of high-voltage high-capacity steel-clad impulse oil circuit breakers required to fulfill the increased interrupting duty requirements of the industry at 138 kv, 161 kv, 230 kv, and 330 kv. Primarily this paper describes the development of the circuit breaker required for the 161-kv 10,000-megavolt-ampere rating. The circuit-breaker design provides for the first time the impulse principle of interruption in a tank-type circuit breaker and in addition combines several of the proved features of modern high- and low-voltage outdoor circuit breakers. These elements are basically flexible enough to be extended readily to increased interrupting ratings and to higher and lower voltage levels. Complete electrical and mechanical design tests demonstrated that the circuit breaker meets all industry standards with ample margins of safety. Tests at the new switchgear development laboratory on all types of interrupting duty produced consistently short interrupting times over the entire current range. Various charging currents corresponding to the equivalent of up to 400 miles of 161-kv transmission line were switched with no restrikes. These tests have demonstrated that the design equalled the performance of the low-oil-content impulse circuit breaker and was flexible enough to provide the necessary starting point for designing an entirely new line of high-voltage high-capacity circuit breakers. The diffusion of stray magnetic fields into conductors is modeled. By considering only the perpendicular axis of a planar magnetic film, then by assuming a rectangular approximation to the stray flux density, the analysis is greatly simplified while identifying the dominant aspects of the interaction. Use of analogous RC transmission line equations permits the representation of instantaneous film switching by the step-response of an electric circuit, which facilitates the estimation of dominant time constants.
