This paper introduces a new design methododology for multiband waveguide filters based on a manifold approach. The new design algorithm is based on a subtle modification of the well-known multiplexer design algorithm. Transmission zeros, enhancing the overall performance, are also shown to be naturally produced. In addition to theory, the measured performance of a multiband filter is shown indicating very good agreement with the simulated response, thereby fully validating the new design methodology.

In this paper, a new systematic technique to design manifold-coupled multiplexers in waveguide technology is proposed. The new technique uses generalized low-order electromagnetic (EM) distributed models, which constitute a half-way point between the fast, but imprecise, analytical models, and the more accurate, but costly, full-wave EM models. The method can be applied to contiguous and noncontiguous channel multiplexers, in both E-plane or H-plane configurations. This paper covers the complete design procedure for manifold multiplexers, starting from the required specifications and finishing with the physical dimensions. After explaining the general design technique for multiplexers with channel filters based on transmission-line resonators, the method is specialized for the design of classic multiplexers with circular-waveguide dual-mode filters. As a further application example, the same methodology is also used for the design of a nonconventional tuningless wideband multiplexer with a new type of rectangular waveguide filters. This paper is concluded with a comparison between simulation and measurements for the wideband multiplexer. Excellent agreement between measurements and simulations are demonstrated, thereby validating the complete design procedure.

The vast majority of nonuniform transmission lines are no analytical solution except for a few special forms of transmission line. Dividing nonuniform transmission line into several equal parts, then each part can be regarded as uniform transmission line approximately. Using the theory of uniform transmission line to analyze nonuniform transmission line's transient response is the commonly used method. Composite Simpson's rule for transient analysis of nonuniform transmission lines is proposed in this paper. The exponential transmission matrix of nonuniform transmission line's equation is transformed into a general algebraic equation, which greatly simplifies the analysis on transient response for nonuniform transmission line. The simulation results illustrate the accuracy of the presented approach with examples.

Cables, printed circuit boards, and VLSI interconnects are commonly modeled as multiconductor transmission lines. Models of electrically long transmission lines are memory and time consuming. In this paper, a robust and efficient algorithm for the generation of a delay-based model is presented. The impedance representation via the open-end matrix Z is analyzed. In particular, the rational formulation of Z in terms of poles and residues is exploited for both lossless and lossy cases. The delays of the lines are identified, and explicitly incorporated into the model. A model order reduction of the system is automatically performed, since only a limited number of poles and residues are included in the rational part of the model, whereas the high-frequency behavior is captured by means of closed expressions that account for the delays. The proposed method is applied to two relevant examples and validated through the comparison with reference methods. The time-domain solver is found to be more accurate and significantly faster than the one obtained from a pure-rational model.

Since the inductance parameter of nonuniform transmission line in anisotropic dielectric is difficult to extract and the tensor dielectric permittivity is hard to solve, a novel method is proposed in this paper to solve this problem. It uses filament division to establish the dispersion model of nonuniform transmission line, and develops the Ampere loop integral dyadic equations and closed circuit dyadic impedance matrix equations in frequency domain based on electromagnetic quasi-static. Finally the inductance parameter is solved. The new method are applied to the calculation of nonuniform transmission line models filled in free space and anisotropic dielectric, showing accuracy and validity of the proposed method. Moreover, the new method can be applied to various transmission line structures and different anisotropic dielectric.

In this contribution, an iterative and adaptive multi-step perturbation technique for nonuniform transmission lines is presented and applied to the analysis of coupled exponential lines. The Telegrapher's equations for nonuniform lines, which do not have a closed-form solution, are recast as the equations for uniform lines with equivalent distributed sources, for which a well-known numerical solution procedure exists. The line voltages and currents are computed in multiple steps by iteratively updating the distributed sources. The method turns out to be faster than classical solutions based on the discretization of the line into uniform subsections. Two validation examples are proposed that deal with coupled exponential lines, which have relevant applicability in microwave components.

This paper faces up the practical design of a class of rectangular waveguide filters using a recently proposed capacitive coupling scheme. Such a coupling scheme creates an E-plane stub in the waveguide resonator, and provides an extra transmission zero. First, a novel 2D building block including the capacitive window and the stub is identified. A parametric analysis of this block is then carried out to evaluate its performance, and also to obtain design guidelines for its use in practical applications. Finally, such guidelines are illustrated with the EM-based design of a novel constant-width filter topology of order 5, which provides 4 transmission zeros without cross-couplings and non resonating nodes. The designed filter is fully validated with measurements of a manufactured prototype.

This paper presents new SPICE-compatible circuit models of multi-ports. The models are based on s-parameters with reference impedances that are allowed to be complex and are not necessarily equal for all ports. Two families of s-parameter definitions are considered: based on pseudo-waves and based on power waves. A number of simple examples confirm the correctness of the proposed approach.

In this paper, the transient analysis of lossy and dispersive multiconductor transmission lines is considered. The existing Green's function-based method is extended to explicitly include delays extraction, thus leading to a significant compressed time-domain state-space model. The proposed method is mainly based on poles and residues asymptotic analysis and lossless delays extraction. The resulting hybrid state-space model incorporates Dirac-combs in the input and results into a reduced number of state variables. A test case has been considered in order to clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The results are compared with the original rational Green's function method, and with the standard inverse fast Fourier transform technique.

The use of guided electromagnetic waves for the wireless transmission of electrical energy has long been the subject of scientific investigation. While attention is presently focused on the near-field inductive and far-field radiative techniques there is ongoing interest, as well, in the possibility of using a terrestrial transmission line mode for wireless power transfer. A history of surface wave theory development is provided, along with comments about the basic functionality of Tesla's original designs.
