To accurately represent a transmission line, the equivalent PI circuit is required. This representation is based on the distributed parameter line model and fully considers the fact that the parameters including impedance and admittance are uniformly distributed throughout the entire length of the line. For a single-circuit transmission line or a positive/negative sequence double-circuit line, its equivalent PI circuit based on the distributed parameter line model has been well established in the literature. This paper aims to provide the equivalent PI circuit parameters for the zero-sequence networks of a double-circuit line where there is a mutual coupling between the parallel lines. The derivation is based on the solution of the differential equations in the time-domain. Hyperbolic forms of the parameters of the equivalent PI circuit are resulted. A numerical example is utilized to demonstrate the application of the equivalent PI circuit parameters and compare with the nominal PI circuit parameters.

A Novel Fault-Location Algorithm for Long Transmission lines Compensated by Series FACTS Devices

This paper introduces a new noniterative fault-location algorithm for long transmission lines compensated by a series flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) device. In the proposed algorithm, synchronous voltage and current samples from both ends of the transmission line are used and the distributed parameter line model in the time domain is applied. Due to the difficulties in the modeling of the series FACTS devices during a fault, the presented method does not use the model of the series devices. In this paper, the fault-location problem is converted to an optimization one in which the location and resistance of the fault are the decision variables. The proposed method includes three stages. Two fault locations are obtained, corresponding to the first two stages. In stage three, the obtained results from stages 1 and 2 are compared, and the correct fault location is selected. The proposed algorithm is a noniterative one and it is suitable for transmission lines compensated by any series FACTS device which could have the overvoltage protection and can be in any operating mode. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated under different structural and fault conditions. The simulation results confirm the accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

Traditional current differential protection is based on Kirchhoff's Law, certainly is severely influenced by the distributed capacitance current. A new traveling wave based differential protective principle is proposed by employing the characteristics of current traveling waves for the distributed parameter line model. There are fixed propagation relations between traveling waves of terminals as the line is healthy or the fault is external, however, the relationship is broken for the internal faults. The protective criterion and scheme are established by this character. The key technique is to quickly calculate the propagating traveling waves from the other terminal on line. The coefficients of propagation function from one terminal to another are obtained by using orthogonal projection methods. The principle and algorithm need not high sampling frequency, are adaptive for not only fundamental component but the transient components, as well as is not sensitive to setting parameters. The large amounts of ATP simulation tests show that the protective scheme and algorithm is simple with high reliability, security, speedy and sensitivity.

Precise fault location algorithm for double-circuit transmission lines using unsynchronised measurements from two anti-parallel ends

A new fault location algorithm for double-circuit transmission lines with availability of complete measurements from two anti-parallel end of the line is presented. Sequence voltage and current phasors from these ends are taken as inputs and no synchronisation between them is needed. Using the pre-fault data, the synchronisation angles between measurements at the reference and the anti-parallel ends are obtained. Using the fault data, the faulted circuit is determined and the sequence voltages and currents at the fault point are calculated as a function of the fault distance. Finally, using the fault boundary conditions that exist for a given fault type, the fault location is derived and solved by an iterative method. Owing to zero-sequence mutual coupling, it is not straightforward to express the zero-sequence voltage and current at the fault point as a function of the zero-sequence voltages and currents at the two measuring ends and the distance to fault. To overcome this problem, a modal transformation matrix is introduced to obtain the modal networks, which are decoupled and can be analysed independently. Based on distributed parameter line model, the proposed algorithm fully considers the effects of shunt capacitances and thus achieves superior locating accuracy, especially for long lines. Mutual coupling between circuits, source impedances and fault resistance do not influence the locating accuracy of the algorithm. The simulation results using ATP-EMTP and MATLAB demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

The equivalent PI circuit for single-circuit lines is well established in the literature based on the distributed parameter line model. However, the equivalent circuit for the mutually coupled zero-sequence networks of a double-circuit line has not yet been adequately addressed. This article endeavors to derive the equivalent PI circuit for the zero-sequence networks of a double-circuit line based on the distributed parameter model. The parameters of the equivalent circuits have a closed analytical form in terms of the line parameters in per-unit length. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the application of the proposed method.

Online Optimal Transmission line parameter Estimation for Relaying Applications

Transmission line protective relaying algorithms usually require transmission line parameters as inputs and thus accuracy of line parameters plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reliable performance of relaying algorithms. Online estimation of line parameters is highly desirable and various methods have been proposed in the past. These methods perform well when the measurements utilized are accurate;they may yield erroneous results when the measurements contain considerable, errors. Based on nonlinear optimal estimation theory, this paper puts forward an optimal estimator for deriving the positive sequence line parameters, capable of detecting and identifying the bad measurement data, minimizing the impacts of the measurement errors and thus significantly improving the estimation accuracy. The solution is based on the distributed parameter line model and thus fully considers the effects of shunt capacitances of the line. Case studies based on simulated data are presented for demonstrating the effectiveness of the new approach.

Transmission line parameters are inputs to various power system analysis algorithms and precision of these parameters are thus important in ensuring the analysis accuracy. This paper proposes methods for estimating positive-sequence line parameters of series compensated lines. Voltages and currents from two ends of the line are utilized. In addition, algorithms for estimating parameters of non-compensated parallel lines utilizing one end data for special scenarios are presented.

Fault location for single-circuit line based on bus-impedance matrix utilizing voltage measurements

Diverse transmission line fault location algorithms have been proposed in the past depending on measurements available. Existing algorithms usually require measurements captured from buses of a faulted line. By taking advantage of the bus-impedance matrix technique, this paper presents a possible fault location approach for single-circuit lines utilizing only voltage measurements from one or two buses, which may be distant from the faulted line. With the addition of a fictitious bus where the fault occurs, the transfer impedances of this bus and other buses are revealed as a function of the fault location. Based on the relationship between the bus voltage change due to fault and the transfer impedance, the fault location can be derived. Shunt capacitance of the line is ignored first and then fully considered based on distributed parameter line model. ElectroMagnetic Transients Program simulation studies have shown quite encouraging results.

Various transmission line fault location algorithms have been proposed in the past depending on the measurements available. In some cases, there are redundant measurements available for fault location purposes, and it may be possible to design an optimal estimator for the fault location based on nonlinear estimation theories. This paper aims at proposing a possible method for deriving an optimal estimate of the fault location that is capable of detecting and identifying the bad measurement data, minimizing the impacts of the measurement errors and thus significantly improving the fault location accuracy. The solution is based on the distributed parameter line model and thus fully considers the effects of shut capacitances of the line. Since field data are not available, case studies based on simulated data are presented for demonstrating the effectiveness of the new method.
