A fault location method for DC transmission line based on the distributed parameter model considering line parameter uncertainty

Addressing the impact of whether line parameters can be accurately obtained and the errors due to environmental influences on the accuracy of fault location for DC transmission line, this paper proposes a fault location method based on the distributed parameter model that accounts for uncertainty in line parameter. To address the challenge of accurately obtaining DC transmission line parameters, a high-order derivative-based parameter estimation method is introduced to determine unknown equivalent parameters of the DC transmission line. Additionally, an optimization algorithm is incorporated to dynamically correct parameter errors, thereby enhancing parameter stability and constructing an accurate line model. Based on this, theoretical derivations confirm the applicability of the Tellegen's quasi-power theorem in the normal operation and internal fault equivalent models of DC transmission line. A fault location function is established based on the relationship between the line's Tellegen quasi-power characteristic and fault distance. The proposed method's effectiveness and accuracy are validated using a DC system model built on the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation platform. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method can locate faults under different fault conditions.

Parametric study of rocking cores-moment frames with supplemental viscous damping and self-centering devices using a distributed parameter model

A distributed parameter model is proposed for the rocking cores-moment frames (RCMFs) with supplemental viscous damping and self-centering devices. In this model, the moment frame and rocking cores are simplified as a shear beam and a flexural beam, respectively, while viscous damping and self-centering devices are substituted by rotational constraint with linear viscous damping and elastic stiffness. Three nondimensional parameters, frame-core stiffness parameter, base-rotation fixity parameter and damping parameter, are introduced to describe the dynamic behavior of the full physical structural system. Closed-form solutions for complex modal shapes are derived, and then parametric study is conducted to explore the effects of these three parameters on modal damping ratios, eigenvalues, complex modal shapes, and drift concentration factor. Explicit expressions of modal damping ratios with these three parameters are established through curve-fitting technique that can be conveniently used for engineering practice. Frequency responses of base shear forces and moments are obtained using the distributed transfer function method. It is concluded that the modal damping ratios are significantly affected by these three parameters, and their peak values will be remarkably reduced as the increasing of the frame-core stiffness and base-rotation fixity. For design purpose, appropriate ranges of these three parameters are recommended to achieve better drift uniformity control, response reduction, and higher modes effect mitigation. The proposed model and conclusions of the parametric study can be used as a tool for rapidly evaluating seismic performance in a preliminary design phase of the RCMFs.

This work presents a distributed parameter model of the anaerobic digestion process. The model is based on the Anaerobic digestion model no. 1 (ADM1) and was developed to simulate anaerobic digestion process in high-rate reactors with significant axial dispersion, such as in upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors. The model, which was named ADM1d, combines ADM1's kinetics of biomass growth and substrate transformation with axial dispersion material balances. ADM1d uses a hyperbolic tangent function to describe biomass distribution within a one compartment model. A comparison of this approach with a two-compartment, sludge bed - liquid above the bed, model showed similar simulation results while the one-compartment model had less equations. A comparison of orthogonal collocation and finite difference algorithms for numerical solution of ADM1d showed better stability of the finite difference algorithm. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Random vibration analysis of multi-floor buildings using a distributed parameter model

The objective of the current paper is to provide an accurate distributed parameter model for random vibration analysis of multi-floor buildings. The Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the equations governing the dynamic behavior of the system as well as the related kinematic and natural boundary conditions. The natural frequency and mode shapes of the developed model are then extracted analytically and validated using finite element simulations. It is also observed that the predictions of the proposed model for the natural frequencies of the system is far more accurate than those of that of the discrete model available in the literature. Using a single mode approximation in the Lagrange equation, the partial differential equations of the motion are reduced to a single ordinary differential equation. Assuming a band limited white noise for the acceleration of the support, the random response specifications (such as expected value, autocorrelation, spectral density and mean square) of the system is calculated by making use of the random vibration theory. The qualitative and quantitative nature of the response characteristic are also analyzed to reveal the effects of different design parameters on the system's response. The suggested modeling approach in this paper may be employed for prediction of the dynamic behavior of more complex structures to different types of deterministic or random excitations. Also the provided analytical method for the random response calculation of the system can be utilized to make more informed decisions in the design process.

A neural network-based distributed parameter model identification approach for microcantilever

The microcantilever used in micro-nanomanipulator is a spatially distributed and flexible mechanical system. An accurate model of the microcantilever is essential for the accurate tip positioning and force sensing. Traditional lumped parameter model will lose the spatial dynamics. Though the nominal Euler-Bernoulli model is a distributed parameter model, in practice there are still some unknown nonlinear dynamics. In this study, a neural network-based distributed parameter model identification approach is proposed for modelling the microcantilever. First, a nominal Euler-Bernoulli beam model is derived. To compensate unknown nonlinear dynamics, a nonlinear term that needs to be estimated is added in the nominal model. For finite-dimensional implementation, the infinite-dimensional partial differential equation model is reduced into a finite-dimensional ordinary differential equation model using the Galerkin method. Next, a neural network-based intelligent learning approach is developed to learn the unknown nonlinearities from the input-output data. A radial basis function recurrent neural network observer is designed to estimate the finite-dimensional states from a few sensors of measurements. After that, a general regression neural network model is identified to establish the nonlinear spatiotemporal dynamic model between the inputs and outputs. The effectiveness of the proposed neural network-based distributed parameter modelling approach is verified by the simulations on a typical microcantilever.

The new distributed parameter model is formulated for the purpose of the investigation of spray drying of multi-component solutions. The main feature of this model is the division of a droplet/wet particle into shells and formulating the mass and heat balances for each shell. In opposition to most similar numerical models, this one takes into account the crust formation during the second stage of drying. By means of this model, we investigate the conditions in which the segregation of the components in particle form takes place. We take into account the initial concentrations of the components in solution, its solubility and diffusion coefficients as model parameters for consideration of the different particle structures. Unbalanced current analysis and novel differential protection for HVDC transmission lines based on the distributed parameter model

The current differential protection presently being used for high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission lines requires increases in time delay and threshold to avoid misoperation, which is induced from a distributed capacitance current along the transmission line, leading to low operation speed and disabling the device from distinguishing between internal and external faults. The unbalanced currents of the non-fault pole are studied in two cases: under an external fault as induced by the distributed characteristics and under a single-pole-to-ground fault as induced by the coupling characteristics of the transmission line parameter. To overcome its defects, this paper develops a new differential protection algorithm based on the distributed-parameter transmission-line model. The fault identification criterion using the compensated current of the common mode and fault pole selection criterion using the compensated current of the differential mode are introduced. Unaffected by the distributed capacitance current, this differential protection correctly operates with high sensitivity through the entire process during the fault. The feasibility and validity of the differential protection algorithm are verified.

Observer-based independent joint control for a coupled rigid-flexible manipulator with actuator saturation based on distributed parameter model

This study is concerned with an observer-based independent joint control scheme for a coupled two-link rigid-flexible robotic manipulator considering the effects of actuator saturation and external disturbances. A distributed parameter model of the robotic manipulator system described by ordinary and partial differential equation (ODE-PDE) is derived by using Hamilton's Principle. An anti-saturation controller is developed to cope with the input saturation problem by using hyperbolic tangent and hyperbolic secant function. Considering the external disturbance, a disturbance observer is designed to estimate the external disturbance. The observer-based independent joint controller can adjust the joint angle and suppress the vibration simultaneously without the need for end-mounted actuators. The extended LaSalle's Invariance Principle is adopted to strictly prove the asymptotic stability of the robotic manipulator system. The simulation comparisons validate the effectivity of the proposed controllers and observers.

A distributed parameter model and its application in optimizing the plate-fin heat exchanger based on the minimum entropy generation

A general three-dimensional distributed parameter model (DPM) was developed for designing the plate-fin heat exchanger (PFHE). The proposed model, which allows for the varying local fluid thermophysical properties inside the flow path, can be applied for both dry and wet working conditions by using the uniform enthalpy equations. The grids in the DPM were generated to match closely the flow passage of the heat exchanger. The classical correlations of the heat transfer and the flow friction were adopted to avoid solving the differential equations. Consequently, the computation burden of DPM becomes significantly less than that of the Computational Fluid Dynamics method. The optimal design of a PFHE based on the DPM was performed with the entropy generation minimization taken into consideration. The genetic algorithm was employed to conduct the optimization due to its robustness in dealing with complicated problems. The fin type and fin geometry were selected optimally from a customized fin database. The PFHE included in an environmental control system was designed by using the proposed approach in this study.
